18U LOOKOUTS WIN TCS FALL NATIONALS
September 16, 2007 - 06:00 PM --

The California Lookouts 18U team wrapped up their summer campaign with a thrilling 9-8 victory over the Maywood Giants to claim The Triple Crown Sports Fall Nationals Title.  Led by a barrage of power, the Lookouts launched 12 homeruns during the weekend, with four apiece from Allen Boyer and Ryan Floros.  Boyer, named the tournament’s Offensive MVP hit at a .529 clip while driving in 12 runs.  Floros, named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, contributed 2 wins on the mound and a save in the Finals while posting a 0.00ERA over ten innings to go along with his four long-balls.

In addition to Boyer and Floros, the Lookouts received great pitching performances from Andy Cole, Matt Lumm, Kyle Collins and Max Peterson, who compiled a thirteen strikeout performance in the last game of pool play.  Collins and Reed Ressler chipped in with hitting clips of .431, HR and .510, HR, respectively.

Lookouts head coach Mike Hymes was thrilled with the outcome in Vegas.  Following the game he stated, “You know we just came out here to have fun and play some good baseball…with only 13 players on the team, I knew the pitching situation would be tough after pool-play.  But, the players really came together on the last day with some very clutch and gutsy performances.  It was a great weekend for the California Lookouts Program and the players should be very happy with their performances.  I’m so proud of all of them.”

The National Championship concluded a summer season that included four tournament titles, including the Nationals, and one tournament runner-up.  Throughout the summer, the 18U Lookouts compiled an overall record of 35-4.

18U LOOKOUTS WIN TCS LABOR DAY CLASSIC
September 5, 2006 - 09:00 AM --

The 18U Lookouts continued their strong play over the Labor Day weekend by winning the Triple Crown Sports Southern California Championship held at Westview High.

Game 1:
Game one vs. the Rookies started off quickly as the Lookouts plated 2 runs in the bottom of the first. Michael Dearborn and Elijah Tupuola led off with singles and both scored on RBI ground-outs by Max Peterson and Brandon Fowler.  After plating 2 more runs in the 2nd, the Lookouts broke the game open in the bottom of the 3rd , scoring 5 runs behind RBI singles by Lookouts newcomer, Kevin Vance (Torrey Pines High), Brian Schofield, and Dearborn.  With the score 9-0, one more run would cross in the bottom of the 4th which ended the game via the 10-run mercy rule.  On the mound for the Lookouts was Jeff Seitz who threw 4 complete, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 4.  Leading the offensive charge for the Lookouts was Dearborn who finished the game 3-3, 2B, SB, & 4RBI.

Game 2:
Game two vs. the West Covina Cobras would be a little closer.  With the Lookouts down 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd, Tupuola launched a 2-run homer to right center to pull the Lookouts ahead 3-2.  The Cobras would score 1 run in the top of the 4th to knot the score at 3.  In the bottom of the 5th, Dearborn lead off with an inside the park homerun which proved to be the difference maker. Final score…Lookouts 4, Cobras 3.

Game 3:
Game three vs. West Coast MVP Baseball would be a little bit of a pitcher’s duel.  With the scoreboard showing zeros in the bottom of the 3rd, David West led off with a triple and was plated by Max Peterson’s 2-out double to make the score 1-0.  The Lookouts would strike again in the bottom of the 5th as West drew a 2-out walk.  Dearborn followed with an RBI double down the left field line.  Dearborn then later scored on an error by the MVP 2nd baseman which brought the score to 3-0 Lookouts.  That would be all that Lookout hurler Chris Hyndman would need as he threw a complete game 2-hit shut out while striking out 12.  With a record of 3-0, the Lookouts headed into the final day of competition.

Game 4:
Game four vs IBAC Baseball would prove to be the only bump in the road for the Lookouts as they dropped the contest 3-1.  As a team, the bats never really showed up.  The offensive bright spot for the Lookouts would fall on the hands of Dearborn who turned in 2-3, 2B, SB performance.

Game 5:
The morning loss dropped the Lookouts to the number 2 seed heading out of pool play and pitted then against the RB Roughriders in the semi-finals.  With the score 0-0 in the top of the 3rd, Brian Schofield singled with one out.  West followed with a walk.  After a pitching change, a successful double steal on the first pitch put runners at second and third with still one away.  Dearborn came up big once again as he singled to left which plated Schofield.  West would score on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Tupuola which made the score 2-0.  Another run would cross the plate in the top of the 6th after Vance walked and stole second; he was plated on a triple by Riley Danford.

The 3-run cushion would be all that Lookout starter Vance would need as he went the distance while striking out 7.  The victory propelled the Lookouts into a championship rematch with IBAC Baseball

Championship Game:
The Championship game would start as another pitcher’s duel.  Both teams scored single runs in the 2nd.  The Lookout’s run came after Vance doubled, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on an error by the IBAC catcher.  Another run would cross in the top of the 4th.  With 2-outs, West singled and stole second.  Dearborn clutched up again with an RBI single up the middle which plated West.  The Lookouts would blow the game open in the top pf the 5th after a lead-off single by Peterson and a triple by Vance which scored Peterson.  With Vance on 3rd, Brandon Fowler executed a perfect safety squeeze making the score 3-1.  2 more runs would score in the frame as West doubled to knock in Schofield and Kyle Collins who had reached on a walk and a single respectively.  After 5 innings, the score was now 6-1.  The Lookouts would add to their lead in the top of the 7th by scoring 6 more runs highlighted by a West 2RBI double and a 2-run single by Dearborn.

Lookouts starter Max Peterson threw 6 1/3 innings while striking out 6.  The game being the last that Peterson would ever throw at Westview, he was removed from the mound and walked to the dugout to a nice standing ovation by the Lookout faithful.  Zack Holm then came on in relief to record the final 2 outs.  Offensive stars for the game were Vance: 3-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI; West: 4-4, 2 2B, SB, 3RBI; Dearborn: 2-5, 3 RBI  Final score, 12-3.

After the game, Head Coach Mike Hymes was asked for his thoughts on the weekend.  “I thought we came out this weekend and really swung the bats well while our pitching was dominant,” said Hymes.  “It was really nice to see Peterson and Tupuola leave their high school alma mater on such a high note,” Hymes added.  Tournament MVP honors went to Torrey Pines’ Michael Dearborn who finished the tournament hitting at an unbelievable .651 clip with 3 doubles and an HR.  The Lookouts now prepare for the Triple Crown Sports Fall Nationals in Las Vegas September 15-17.

Back Row (left to right):  Kevin Vance, Andrew Volk, Elijah Tupuola, Andy Cole, Will Knowles, Coach Jory McEachern, Brian Schofield, Head Coach Mike Hymes, Max Peterson, Riley Danford and David West.

The 18U Lookouts won five straight games en route to winning the TCS Orange County Fall Nationals Qualifier.  With the victory, the 18U Lookouts qualified for the TCS Fall Nationals in Henderson, NV.  The Fall Nationals will be held September 15-17.

Game 1:
Game 1 against the Rookies began quietly as the Lookouts had a 1-0 lead heading in to the top of the 3rd inning. To open the frame, Michael Dearborn (Torrey Pines High), was hit by a pitch. He was quickly plated when Max Peterson (Mesa College) launched the first pitch over the right center-field wall for his second homer of the summer. Four more runs would cross the plate as back-to-back singles by Dan Pellegrino (Poway High) and Elijah Tupuola (Mesa College) set the table for Riley Danford (Westview High) and Andrew Volk (Westview High) with RBI opportunities. They both cashed in with a double and a single respectively. Three more runs would score in the top of the 4th behind the bats of Peterson, Pellegrino, Tupuola, and Kyle Collins (Westview High). Behind a potent offense and the pitching of Chris Hyndman (Mesa College) who pitched a 1-Hit shutout, the Lookouts won by mercy rule.

Game 2:
Game 2 vs. the Titans started off with a bang as Allen Boyer (Mt. Carmel High) hit the first pitch of the ball game over the right-field wall for a quick 1-0 lead. Dearborn would later score in the first on an RBI ground out by Pellegrino. After scoring one more run in the 2nd, three more runs came in the 4th on the heels of Volk’s 2-run double. Two more runs in the 6the off a 2-run shot by Boyer and great relief work on the mound by Andy Cole (Westview High) and Zack Holm (Rancho Bernardo High) sealed the 9-3 victory.

Game 3:
Game 3 vs. the Tigers was the last game of pool play and would be a bittersweet victory for the Lookouts. In the top of the first, with Dearborn and Boyer on first and second respectively, Peterson hit a line-drive off the arm of Boyer while both runners were attempting a double-steal. The blow to Boyer’s arm would result in a fractured left forearm and there placed him on the disabled list immediately following the game. Despite the injury to Boyer, the Lookouts won the game running away, by the score of 16-3 behind the steady bat of Danford (3-3, 2 doubles, 4 RBI) and the strong pitching performances of Will Knowles (San Dieguito Academy) and Holm.

Game 4:
Game four matched the #1 seeded Lookouts vs. the #2 seeded Murrieta Broncos in the semi-finals. On the mound for the Lookouts was Max Peterson who turned in another near flawless pitching performance by hurling a 3-hit complete game shutout while striking out 10. On the offensive side, the Lookouts used a 13-hit attack that was lead by 3-hit performances from Dearborn and Peterson, while Collins, Tupuola, and David West (Westview High) turned in 2-hit contributions of their own. Final score…Lookouts 7, Broncos 0.

Championship Game:
The Championship game featured the Lookouts vs. the Poway Express. In what shaped up to be an early dogfight, the Lookouts looked to bounce back from an early 4-0 deficit after the top of the 2nd. In the bottom half of the frame, Brandon Fowler (Westview High) led-off with a single. With one out, Collins singled and Danford was hit by a pitch. With bases loaded, Brian Schofield (Westview High) singled up the middle to plate Fowler and Collins. West then singled which scored Danford. Following West, Dearborn added a single of his own. With the score now at 4-3, the bases were again loaded with Tupuola coming to the plate. Tupuola launched a 0-1 pitch over the left-center field wall. By the time the dust had settled, Tupuola’s grand-slam had made the score 7-4.

After a rocky second inning, Lookouts starter Andy Cole settled down and allowed only one more run to his total of 4+ innings of work. West came on in relief and acted as the set-up man for closer Brandon Fowler who entered in the seventh and retired each batter he faced.

The 7-5 victory marked the 1st tournament title for the 2006 summer season. When asked about his thoughts for the weekend, Head Coach Mike Hymes responded, “I was very pleased with the way we swung the bats this weekend. We struggled a little earlier this summer to score runs using wood bats. But, that seems to have improved quite a bit.” The tournament victory sends the Lookouts to the Triple Crown Fall Nationals this September.
