Yankees win 4-2 in Game Called Due To Rain
June 5, 2007 --
The Yankees finished with a 4-2 victory over the Nationals Tuesday evening at Long Field in a game halted in the 5th inning due to rain. With the game having completed 4 innings it goes in the books as a complete game and a victory in the win column for the Yanks. The team came out of the gate with a strong performance at the plate banging out seven hits in four innings. Ricky Colbert had a great day on the mound. The Yankees nine year old pitcher pitched the first two innings striking out 6 batters. With the start of the third inning and the Yankees up 4-0 Ricky took the mound and walked the first batter and Hit the second. With two men on Manager Scott Stevenson decided to replace Ricky with the second southpaw of the evening in John Ackerman. Runners quickly advance to second and third however the team gave up one run to get an out on a ground out hit to Danny May. The next batter DJ Powell singled driving in Ryan McMillan for the Nationals second run of the game. With one out and a runner on first Garrett Kesner hit a rope past Nick Mazzeo at third, JT Stevenson made a good play on the ball in the outfield and quickly got it to his cut-off man in Austin Bittner. With the Nationals DJ Powell heading toward third base Nats coach Joe Powell decided to test the Yankees relay and sent the runner home to score, Bittner took the relay and threw the ball toward home and with John Ackerman standing on the mound cut the ball for the second leg of the relay and zipped it to Bradly Stotler who applied the tag for the second out of the inning thus preventing the third run from scoring. The third out was recorded on a pop fly off the bat of Tylee Powell to Austin Bittner. The fouth inning was uneventful as both teams sent four batters to the plate with each team leaving one runner at third base. Leading hitters for the Yankees were Nick Mazzeo with a triple and single, John Ackerman with two singles and Austin Bittner with a triple. Another great team victory! When the Yanks returned to the plate in the second four runs were plated with John Ackerman smacking a double and Nick Mazzeo hitting a shot down third. When the Yanks took the field in the Third Jeet again stuck to his routine and allowed four batters to step in the box and struck out three. In the fourth John slipped and allowed five batters to plate but again struck out the side.
