How old does my child need to be to play for the Delray Beach Riptide Lacrosse League? Is it based on age, grade or weight?
The Delray Beach Riptide Lacrosse League uses South Florida Youth Lacrosse divisions: four (4)boys divisions based on grade:
Kindergarten thru Second Grade – Bantam Division
Third and Fourth Grades – Lightning Division
Fifth and Sixth Grades – Junior Division
Seventh and Eighth Grades – Senior Team
Is there a league for girls?
Yes! The Delray Beach Riptide Lacrosse League has the following girls divisions:
K- 2nd Bantam
3rd – 5th Junior
6th – 8th Senior
When does Lacrosse start – what season is it played in – will it conflict with other sports?
Lacrosse is considered a spring sport and will start in late January and end in the beginning of May. Signup begin in November, and run through early January. We also offer a fall program on Fridays and Sundays.
Does my child need to be an experienced player or are new players welcome?
New players are very welcome! Experience is welcome too, however it is not a requirement. Our coaches will stress fundamentals: scooping ground balls, passing, and catching. Our intention is to educate the players and to have fun. It is our intention that all players will play regardless of capabilities. We want this to be a fun and interactive experience for all players at all ages.
How may players are on a lacrosse field at any point in time what are the positions?
Boys Lacrosse is played with ten players on each side. Lacrosse positions break down to four basic roles, they are:
Attack – Offensive players focused on scoring goals
Midfielders – Players that play both offense and defense
Defenders – Defensive players focused on defending the goal
Goalies – Last line of defense committed to preventing the ball
from entering the goal
Girls Lacrosse is played with 11 players on a side.
How big is a Lacrosse Field? Will my child have to
run a lot? What are good corresponding or
complimentary sports for Lacrosse?
Boys lacrosse fields are the same length as full size
soccer fields but slightly narrower. Girls lacrosse fields
are slightly larger than a full size soccer field. Lacrosse is
considered the fastest game on two feet and children on
the Lightning, Junior and Senior divisions will play on a
full size field. Soccer and Flag Football are excellent
complimentary sports for lacrosse! However, Hockey and
Basketball players have the best understanding of plays
and the transition game from defense to offense.

Will the Delray Beach Riptide Lacrosse provide player equipment – or will players have to furnish their own equipment to play?
The Delray Beach Lacrosse League will not furnish player equipment. All players are responsible for their own equipment including purchase and maintenance. There are local lacrosse shops to purchase equipment including Stickhead lacrosse located in Boca Raton and Lacrossewear located in Coconut creek. Riptide players receive a 10% discount at both stores.
Limited loaner equipment is available on a needs basis.
How often will the teams meet for practice and how often will they play games?
Players will generally practice one to two games per week with games played on Saturdays.
