7th Grade Falcons 12u - Season Recap 2005
'05 Record ~ 29-3

2005 was a great year for these kids. Back in early June when we started putting the kids together we knew we had something special with this group. We knew we would be deep and talented (and the kids proved it time and time again). We went and won the Clinton Middle School Passing League in July. Competing against nothing but 8th graders our first time together 7th graders got the job done. No team there could match our speed and quickness. This team built up an incredible reputation throughout the state and southeast.

After two early season scrimmages against older teams things we're looking good. Our "D" was swarming to the ball in bunches, did not yield a single TD in those two scrimmages.

We as usual opened play in the early bowl game at C.B.F.O. We played decent considering it was our first game. We won this bowl for the third straight year against the tough Admirals, the final score was 26-6.

The following week came our first road trip, we traveled to Stone Mountain, Georgia for the Annual Metro Atlanta Pre-Season Classic. Over 60 teams from all over the South were in attendance. First game we were hooked up with one of the city of Memphis' most respected programs (Whitehaven Dynamites). Dynamite coaches got our kids fired up early in line @ the weigh-in, saying "we were to fat and slow", "our fat boys were going to look stupid trying to catch there smaller kids". The Dynamites were definitely small in statue but played big. After the show started you couldn't really here much from the same coaches who were talking smack. After it was over the Falcons had hushed the talking with a 27-13 lopsided win. Devin Williams had an incredible game running for two long scores and returning an interception for a another long score. The next day we faced the tough Central Dekalb Jaguars (white) from Stone Mountain, GA. They were a big talented team but the Falcons came away w/ a 26-0 win. In a classic semi-final game we defeated the host team (Central Dekalb Jaguars - Black). The Jags, were HUGE and FAST. The game was a war, defenses dominated the game, Devrin Young made one of the most exciting plays as he took a screen pass some 60 yards for the Falcons lone score. Young eluded at least 7 would-be-tacklers and raced to the end zone leaving the Jaguars players, coaches and fans in AWE. As coach Josh says "it was one of the most exciting runs I've seen in youth football". The Jags wouldn't go easy, they scored in the final minute on a hail mary yes that's correct a hail mary from 50 yards out (there QB had a rocket arm and a HUGE 6 ft plus tall wideout). But Falcons' DB Brandon Taylor wrestled the ball away from the Jag WR to keep them from getting their point after try. The Falcons went on to win 7-6 in a CLASSIC. The Falcons went on to win the 12u championship against the Adamsville Vikings from Atlanta (who defeated the Falcons 7-6 in a Saturday pool play game - in a thriller). It was an incredible weekend, winning this tournament brought us some much repsect from the youth football world. Coach Josh still gets calls and emails from people who saw us play there and were very impressed.

After the long weekend in Atlanta two days later we were to open league play against defending league runner-up Bearden Bulldogs. Falcons showed no signs of being tired after the long draining weekend and whipped the 'Dawgs handily 37-0. Many players contributed on the scoring.

The Falcons finished league play 8-0. The first round of the playoffs we were matched up against the upset minded Central Bobcats. The Bobcats played hard on a cold night. In the end the Falcons escaped with a 22-14 win. That advanced the Falcons to the Knox Metro Championship where we were matched to play against our own #2 team (Knox Falcons #2) who downed C.B.F.O. in their playoff matchup. The Falcons #1 proved why theywere the #1 team. The team was focused and prepared as the #2 Falcons had been talking a little trash prior to the game. The #2 Falcons proved to be no challenge as the Falcons scored early and often and raced to a 28-0 lead in the early third quarter. That was the final score as the #1 Falcons showed class in not running the score up against our own. We took a knee at the 2 yard line to end the game..

The first weekend in November we played in the 2nd Annual Slobber Knocker Classic at Karns High School in Knoxville. We were matched up against a team from Corbin, KY. The team was much smaller than the Falcons. The Falcons handled the KY team 42-0.

Weekend before we were to travel to the Nationals, we decided to travel 90 miles down I-75 S to Chattanooga, TN for the Annual Turkey Bowl. Us coaches felt like this would be a great tune-up before going to play the nation's best. First game we defeated the Inncer City Tigers (Chattanooga) 20-6. Very scrapy team, we played sloppy but got it done. Later that night we faced an all-star team from Lexington, KY. The Falcons "O" was clicking as QB's Ricshon Johnson & Ben Winters connected w/ several receivers to light up the score board. The Falcons won big against a very solid team 42-13. The following day we were set to play the Rome (Georgia) Tigers, they refused to play saying the Falcons were too old. So that matched us up with the host Southside Cowboys. The Cowboys added a couple older players to help there chances. The Falcons still came out on top in a thriller 21-19. Congrats to JaVonte Cotner on being named MVP of the tournament.

Next came the Youth Nationals in sunny Daytona Beach. We borded the bus shortly after midnight two days before Thanksgiving. Once arriving we learned we would be playing a nearby opponent, the UNA Bears of Nashville, TN. Always a well coached, talented and big team. It was a dog-fight, Falcons scored first with Ben Winters connecting on a drag route across the middle to TE Khiry Riddles but in the end the Bears came out on top 32-19. The Bears went on to win the whole thing and were crowned National Champs. The only two teams to defeat us this weekend were the Champs and Runner-Ups (North Clayton GA Cowboys).

One of the season's many highlights were defeating previously unbeaten rival Austin-East 13 year old and under team. We won rather handily against the big and talented Roadrunners 20-0. This would be the older Roadrunners only loss of the season as they went on to win the 13u Midget Metro Championship.
