Remembering What Little League Is All About
Little League was started in 1939 to provide organized activity for young boys in the small Pennsylvania town of Williamsport. Since that time it has expanded to include not only young boys but young girls. The original ages of players have expanded into programs for teenagers and players as young as 5 years old. Little League involves over 3 million players worldwide. Because Little League has gained worldwide recognition from the televised tournaments and World Series we tend to forget that the vast majority of players will never be seen on television. They are ballplayers that are trying to learn and enjoy the game as much as we did (and still do) during our childhood.

Managers need to realize that Little League is about learning not only the game, but about teamwork and sportsmanship. Each team has a variety of players that display different levels of skill and a good manager will enhance those skills and increase the enjoyment of the Little League experience. The league should make sure that the managers we have selected are creating a positive experience for our players and players are learning proper sportsmanship.

The best comment a manager can receive at the end of the season is "I enjoyed playing this year."

Immediate Moratorium On Composite Bats In Upper Baseball Divisions
December 30, 2010
Little League International has placed a moratorium on the use of composite bats in the Little League (Majors) Division and all other baseball divisions of Little League, effective immediately.

"Today's decision of the Little League International Board of Directors Executive Committee is based on scientific research data from the University of Massachusetts (Lowell), which was contracted by Little League Baseball," Stephen D. Keener, President and Chief Executive Officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. "The maximum performance standard for non-wood bats in the divisions for 12-year-olds and below is a Bat Performance Factor (BPF) of 1.15. The research found that composite bats, while they may meet the standard when new, can exceed that standard after a break-in process."

Click Here for an updated list of approved composite bats.

Local Little Leagues were first informed of the research last September.

"From the beginning, and throughout this process, we wanted to keep everyone informed," Patrick W. Wilson, Vice President of Operations at Little League International, said. "Our intent was to provide local league constituents clear direction regarding composite bats. There is a process through which manufacturers can submit individual models for a possible waiver if they wish to seek it. Going forward, we will let our leagues know which ones meet the standards for the Little League Baseball (Majors) 12-and-under divisions, if any."

On Sept. 1, Little League International placed a moratorium on composite bats in the Junior, Senior, and Big League Baseball Divisions of Little League. Subsequent to that moratorium, some composite bat models have received a waiver and may be used in those divisions. Click Here for information on the composite bats that have received waivers for the Junior, Senior, and Big League Baseball Divisions of Little League.

At present, no composite bats for the Little League (Majors) Division and below have received a waiver. If and when any models do receive a waiver, Little League International will inform its leagues of that decision.

The moratorium on composite bats, which now applies to all baseball divisions of Little League, does not apply to any softball divisions of Little League.

Sincerely,

Little League International
Medical Release Forms

All Managers should bring Medical Release Forms for every player on your team to practices and games. This is a Little League requirement.
Concussion Training
In accordance with the new Washington State Law, please review the attached Concussion Form. We then need parents to: Print the attached form, Read it, Sign it indicating they have read and understood the form, and then Give the signed form to their team's manager before the first practice.

Managers, please keep the Concussion Form along with your Medical Release Forms all season long. Players should not be allowed to practice on any school property until you have received their signed concussion form.

Participation In Non-Little League Tournaments
MANAGERS - If you are contemplating signing up a team for a non-Little League tournament (i.e. ASA softball tournament, etc.), you need to comply with the following Little League rules, otherwise you are jeopardizing the Little League status of the players and coaches who participate in tournaments:

1. The team you sign up cannot consist entirely of your Little League team.
2. You cannot wear your Little League jerseys.
3. You cannot use your Little League equipment.
4. Little League insurance will not cover any injuries in non-Little League games. You should consider getting accident insurance, if offered by the group organizing the tournament, in case someone gets hurt and be sure to make the parents of the players on the tournament team aware of the accident insurance status.
