History of Roller Hockey in Lyndhurst
The Lyndhurst Youth Hockey League (LYHL) started in 1975 as a street hockey league organized by a small, but dedicated group of players and coaches. For most of the early years of the LYHL, players competed on foot amidst the potholes, fencing, and backboards of local basketball courts and school yards. In the mid-1990s, the LYHL incorporated roller hockey into the program and soon moved games to its current home on Riverside Avenue. The last street hockey games were played in 1997 as the LYHL moved to exclusively organize roller hockey games. It was also during this time that teams from Lyndhurst first started to compete in the North Jersey Youth Roller Hockey Association (NJYRHA)--an outdoor travel league composed of the best roller hockey teams from towns throughout the Bergen County area. In 2006, the rink on Riverside Avenue was dedicated to the memory of long-time Lyndhurst commissioner, Peter J. Russo.
From very humble beginnings, the LYHL now offers boys and girls from kindergarten through high school a roller hockey program that includes more that a dozen recreation teams and a group of travel squads that are perennially some of the best teams in the NJYRHA.
