    GAME RECAP W/E 08/31 2008

    The Marlboro Senior Softball teams suspended play last week to play in the 5th Annual BSA Tournament in Wayland. The Iron Workers Union Local #7 came in 2nd to the Tewksbury Seniors. We won 3 of the 4 games losing in the final to a strong Tewksbury team.

    The Iron Workers Local #7 opened up against the Gray Sox from Wayland winning that game 14 – 5. Bob Clifford led the way with 2 for 2 with a triple and a walk.

    The Iron Workers next met the Windham Elders from Windham, Ct and won that game 13 to 3 and advanced to the Semi Finals. Mike Otenti and Tom Hall led the offense in this game with both going 2 for 3 with Mike getting a triple and Tom chipping in with a double.

    The Iron Workers opened the semi-finals against the “A” Team from Wayland. The Iron Workers won this game 11-4 behind the pitching of Fred Scerra who shut down their big guns. Steve Picone led the offense going 4 for 4 with a triple. Bob Maquire also went 3 for 3.

    We met the Tewksbury Seniors in an exciting finals losing to Tewksbury 23 – 17. This game was strictly an offensive battle with Tewksbury having more firepower than the Marlborough team. Marlborough's offense was led by Tom Hall and Dennis Naylor both going 3 for 4.

    Overall offense for the tournament was led by Steve Picone, Tom Hall and Steve Goldstein all going 8 for 12. Even though we couldn't repeat as champions we all enjoyed the 2 days and look for to next year to regain our crown. We will be idle for another week as most of our players will be heading to the Cape to play on various teams in the Cape Classic on Sept 4-11.



    The Marlboro Senior Softball team after 3 weeks of rain outs finally got to play this week. The Iron Workers Union Local #7 traveled to Tewksbury to take on the Tewksbury Seniors without 5 of their regular players.

    The Iron Workers Local #7 dropped the two games losing the first 18 to 3 and lost the 2nd game 15 to 6. The Local #7 offense was led by Bob Clifford and Bob Maquire both going 4 for 6 and Mike Otenti 4 for 7. Mgr Steve Goldstein says we really missed the 5 players as we just couldn't generate any offense.

    The Iron Workers will be looking for payback next week we we meet them in the 5th annual BSA tournament which is held in Wayland on Aug 25-27th. Steve says we will have our full roster and will be out to defend our title and repeat as BSA champions.

    The Local Iron Workers will be back in action this week hosting the Gray Sox from Wayland.
    The Friends of the Seniors will be hosting the EMASS 65+ team in a practice game helping the EMASS team get ready for the Cape Cod Classic in September.

    The Marlboro Senior Softball teams were in action last week with the week. The Iron Workers Union Local #7 their 2 games and The Friends of the Marlboro Seniors won their four games the week of Jul 2nd.

    The Iron Workers Local #7 visited the Gray Sox in Wayland and split their two games winning the first 8 to 4 and lost the rain shortened game 10 – 7. The Local #7 offense was led by Dennis Naylor and Mike Otenti both going 5 for 6. Defensive gem Tom Hall continued his hot play in left field running down fly balls and throwing out 2 more runners at home and 3rd.

    The Friends of the Marlborough Seniors softball team enjoyed their best week of the season, so far, winning all 4 games. They took 2 from the Scituate Seniors winning both games 11-10 and 13 - 4 The batting stars, for the day, were Emory Payne who was 3 for 5 and Larry Kron who was 2 for 3 with two walks.

    The Friends then took on the Gray Sox “Bees and split their double header winning the first game 16 – 12 and winning the 2nd game 11 – 6. Marlboro offense was led by Don Armstrong going 5 for 5 and Bob Biggar 5 for 7 and Ed Beauchemin 4 for 6.

    Team Record are the Friends of the Marlboro Seniors is 6 and 12 and the Iron Workers Union Local #7 is 14 and 6.




    GAME RECAP W/E 06/22/2008
    The Marlboro Senior Softball teams were in action last week with a clean sweep for the week. The Iron Workers Union Local #7 took 2 games and The Friends of the Marlboro Seniors won their two games the week of Jun 21st.

    The Iron Workers Local #7 entertained the Windham Ct Elders and took the doubleheader in two close games winning 13 - 7 and the 2nd game 10 – 7. The Local #7 offense was led by Steve Goldstein 5 for 7, Pete Mirabella 4 for 7 and Mike Otenti chipping in with a triple and double..

    The Friends of the Marlborough Seniors softball team enjoyed their best day of the season, so far, sweeping a doubleheader at the Shrewsbury Seniors. The scores were 9 to 8, in a very tight contest, Marlboro scoring the winning run in the top of the 7th inning, and 14 to 9 in game two. The batting stars, for the day, were Emory Payne who had 6 hits in 7 trips to the plate and Kevin Neary who went 5 for 6. Bob Clark went 3 for 3 in the 1st game, while Emory, Kevin and Don Smith were all 3 for 3 in the 2nd game. Bob Biggar pitched game 1 and Paul Chambers pitched the 2nd. Manager Ron Saloman indicated that these were team wins as every single player contributed at the plate or with solid fielding plays.

    Team Record are the Friends of the Marlboro Seniors is 4 and 8 and the Iron Workers Union Local #7 is 12 and 4.

    The Marlboro Senior Softball team Iron Workers Union Local #7 took 3 out 4 games this week. The Friends of the Marlboro Seniors were idle this week


    The Iron Workers Local #7 traveled to play Tewksbury Seniors and took a doubleheader winning 18 – 15 and the 2nd game 15 - 11. Mgr Goldstein stated that it is a rare feat to take a doubleheader from Tewksbury at their home park. The Local #7 offense was led by Tom Hall who went 7 for 8 and Mike Narducci and Dennis Naylor both going 5 for 8.

    The Iron Workers then travel to Wayland to play the Gray Sox and split the doubleheader there losing the first game 18 – 14 and winning the 2nd 11– 3. Marlboro offense was led by Bob Maquire and Tom Hall both going 5 for 7. Steve Picone also chipped in with a home run.

    June 17, 2008  --   The Marlboro Senior Softball team Iron Workers Union Local #7 took 3 out 4 games this week. The Friends of the Marlboro Seniors were idle this week


    The Iron Workers Local #7 traveled to play Tewksbury Seniors and took a doubleheader winning 18 – 15 and the 2nd game 15 - 11. Mgr Goldstein stated that it is a rare feat to take a doubleheader from Tewksbury at their home park.     May 28, 2008  --   We would appreciate it if you could print the following press release for the Marlboro Senior Softball Assoc.:

    The two Marlboro Senior Softball teams play at him this and went 1 for 3,

    The Friends of Marlboro Seniors dropped a doubleheader to the Worcester Falcons “B” They dropped the first game 18 – 3 and the 2nd 20 - 0. Mgr Ron Saloman stated that this wasn’t one of the teams better days. The Marlboro’s offense was led by Dennis Pollard and Don Smith both hitting long triples.

    The Iron Workers Local #7 entertained the Tewksbury Seniors and split a doubleheader winning the first game 15 - 13 and losing the 2nd 8 – 7 with Tewksbury winning it in the last of the 7th. The Local #7 offense was led by Fred Scerra going 6 for 6 and Mike Otenti going 4 for 6. Scerra, who pitches for the Local #7’s stated after the game that Ron Anderson from Tewksbury hit the longest ball he has seen in 5 yrs of playing at Ghiloni in our age group. Scerra measured it after the game and it went 375’. No bad for a 70 yr old.

    Team Record are the Friends of the Marlboro Seniors is 2 and 6 and the Iron Workers Union Local #7 is 5 and 3.

    GAME RECAP W/E 05/18/2008
    May 18, 2008  --   Played under threatening skies and intermittent rain, The Friends of Marlboro Seniors dropped a doubleheader to the Shrewsbury Seniors. The scores were 17 to 12 and 14 to 9. Seven of the Marlboro players had 2 hits in game one and Paul Starek and Don Armstrong each went 3 for 4 in game two. Marlboro had multiple base runners in every inning of the 2nd game but couldn’t cash in.

    The Iron Workers Local #7 entertained the Windham Elders from Ct and took a doubleheader winning the first game 15 - 11 and the 2nd 11 - 9. The Local #7 offense was led by Dick Mazzone going 5 for 5 with 3 triples. Steve Picone and Dennis Naylor also pitched in with a 5 for 7 performance with Naylor hitting for the cycle.

    Team Record are the Friends of the Marlboro Seniors is 2 and 4 and the Iron Workers Union Local #7 is 4 and 2.


    GAME RECAP W/E 05/11/2008
    May 11, 2008  --   The Marlboro Sr. Softball teams Iron Workers Local Union #7 and The Friends of the Marlborough Seniors played this week and split with the Iron Workers taking two from the Worcester Falcons “A” and the Friends dropping two to the Worcester Falcons “B” team.

    The Friends of Marlborough Seniors Team traveled to Worcester, on Monday May 5th, to face the Worcester Falcons B’s. In the 1st game, after falling behind by an 8 to 1 score The Friends rallied to take a 9 to 8 lead before succumbing to a late Worcester hitting barrage and falling by a score of 18 to 9. Paul Starek and Bob Biggar were the batting leaders for Marlborough, each went three for three.
    Game 2 was a very closely fought contest with the lead going back and forth. Tied after regulation at 6 to 6, Worcester pushed across two runs in the extra inning to prevail 8 to 6. Leading the charge by The Friends were Paul Wright who went 3 for 4 and Paul Chambers with 3 hits in as many plate appearances.

    The Iron Workers Local #7 entertained the Worcester Falcons A’s at home taking both ends of a doubleheader. The Iron Workers took the first game 9 - 6 and 2nd game 16 – 9 breaking out with the 6 runs in the top of the 7th to put the game away. The Iron Workers offense was led by Bob Maquire and Dick Mazzone both going 4 for 6 and Steve Picone pitching in with 2 home runs.
