2005-06 Cross Country & Track Results
CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS
Fulton County High/Middle School will be offering a Trial Season of Cross Country Running for Fall 2005 to students grades 7-12. The purpose of this program is to determine if there is enough of an interest in the sport to offer it every year as a Varsity Sport. During this pilot year our focus will be on developing our Distance Runners for Track, Pre-Season Conditioning for Basketball, and helping Students Get in Shape or Lose Weight by becoming physically active. To make it interesting we have arranged for our athletes to Compete in 2 Road Races & 5 Cross Country Meets so that they may learn about the sport of competitive running. After competing in 4 Races runners will be eligible to compete in the Region 1 Class A Cross Country Championships and have the opportunity to qualify for the Kentucky Class A State Meet in Lexington.

The Fulton County Boys & Girls Cross Country runners closed out their inaugural season with strong performances in the Graves County Twilight Invitational and Region 1 Class A Championships to finish a season which christened a new ship in the the Pilot Athletics fleet. Eight runners participated this season and set the foundation for future success on the running trails of western Kentucky.
This year's lone Lady Pilot runner was sophomore Ellie Goodman. Ellie trained hard on her own outside of school and improved her times throughout the season. She consistantly ran under 30 min. for 5K races which was one of her goals as a first year runner. Her best time was a 27:45 at the Graves County invitational and set the bar for the Fulton County girls school record.
The Pilot boys had a little more participation, fielding 7 runners. The season opened with 8th grader Jance Snisky and sophomore Rion Spurlock placing 8th & 10th respectively in the 13-16 year old class at the Wingo Trail Run. This was followed by senior exchange student from Germany, Felix Wartemann, placing first in the 17-19 age group and 3rd overall at the Pontotoc 5K. Felix was the Pilots top finisher in the Region with a 29th place finish on a tough course at Vastwood Park in Hancock County. Sophomores Nathan Grasfeder and Lance Mudd experienced their first cross country races also this year with Lance making great progress throughout, improving by 6 minutes over the length of the season. Another runner who showed big jumps in performance throughout the season was sophomore John Max Wilson. John was dedicated in his training and battled it out with Snisky throughout the season for the team's #4 spot. The Pilot's top runner, sophomore Tony Udley, opened his season by medaling at the Murray Tiger Invitational with a 16th place finish and set the school's record time of 18:32 at the Graves County Twilight Invitational. A football injury kept Udley from competing in the Regional meet and erased the possiblility of earning a state bid in his first year but he looks forward to next season for a second shot at a state trip to Lexington.
INDOOR TRACK RESULTS
Fulton County Track & Field in cooperation with Murray State Track & Field Coach Dereck Chavis has organized the first Indoor Track & Field Meet in West Kentucky for the 2006 KY Indoor Track Season. The West Region High School Invitational was held on Saturday March 11th at the Regional Special Events Center (RSEC) located on the campus of Murray State University. With the help of area coaches and administrators we hope to have provided an opportunity for our athletes and the sport of Track & Field in our area for years to come.
WEST REGION HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL 3/11/06
GIRLS - 6th, 22 Points
BOYS - 15th, 4 Points
This was a new and excellent experience for our athletes. Fulton County has never competed in indoor track before and now that we have initiated it in our end of the state we plan to travel to a few more next season. For us this was more of a tune up meet for outdoor track but the high level of competition will help our athletes see where they are at this point and how much work they will need to do in order to peak at Regions in May.
Individually, Sharika Smith performed well even though she was in basketball shape not track & field shape having just come off of the Regional Tournament. Gwenetta Bess had a good race also, placing in the top 10 in the 55m Dash. Deanna Dean threw an impressive shot put placing 6th against some of the area's top thowers. She is having to step up this season to make up for team points we lost from last year's state qualifiers Catrina Turner graduating and Destiny Johnson moving away. Alex Barnett, normally a sprinter, is learning to throw as well and Dean and Barnett along with boy throwers Mitchell Mulcahy and Dariquez Scott placed 3rd in the Co-ed Throwers Shuttle Relay a specialty race for this meet.
On the boy's side, Tony Udley is at a great starting point in the 400m Dash even though he wasn't comfortable with his race strategy on the smaller indoor track. Times for Indoor events are often slower than outdoor events of the same distance due to the number and sharpness of the turns. His 400m indoor time is close to where he left off last spring. Antoine Gaston, normally a long & triple jumper, got a feel of what he needs to do to improve the speed of his racing starts by running the 55m Dash. He had the 4th best time for runners in our Region for that race and has a lot of sprint potential.
Team wise our Girls placed in the middle of the pack and could have done better but a disqualification in a relay hurt us. It is better that we get that out of our system now and learn from it than have it happen later in the season. The Boys didn’t fair as well at this meet, but they had several of their more experienced athletes unable to attend. At full strength our boys should make an impact early in the 2006 outdoor season. Our next event is a Scrimmage Meet with South Fulton at Fulton County High School next week.
This is an event that we plan to continue with each year playing with different dates to find where it best fits within Kentucky’s indoor track season. The RSEC is a quality indoor facility that has “big meet potential” and could draw out-of-state teams to our area. Next year we plan to look for corporate sponsorship to help us take this meet to the next level.
TRACK & FIELD RESULTS
The Fulton County Track & Field program begins its 2006 campaign March 30th with a Quad-Meet at Ballard Memorial and will showcase their athletic talents during meets at Crittenden County, Murray, Marshall County, Paducah, Union City TN, and East Prairie MO in their journey to Lexington. Both the Boys and Girls teams have been practicing and weight training since December in preparation for the Spring Season. While only losing three athletes from last year's team the Pilots and Lady Pilots will have to step it up make up for those team points. Though still young, the team carries a great deal of experience. With only three seniors on the team, many of the underclassmen athletes are 4 year starters and are poised and ready for their breakthrough season.
The Lady Pilots placed high in team competition throughout last season, including a 3rd Place finish in the Region and a 10th Place finish at State. Top returnees from 2005 include junior Gwendolyn Bess who placed 5th in Triple Jump at Regions, sophomores Sharika Smith who became Kentucky Class A State Champion in the 200m & Triple Jump setting a new State Record at 39 ft. and Gwenetta Bess who was on the State Qualifying 4x100m Relay team that placed 9th at State. Freshman Deanna Dean will be our only returning female thrower and will try and win back some of the points we lost when state place winners Catrina Turner graduated and Destany Johnson moved away. Also returning for her freshman year is Latequa Kinney who has been a regular on our 4x200m relay team for 2 years. Our Middle School girls will still have the core of their sprint relay squad as state relay team members Alex Barnett and Ladaria Gaston will compete at both varsity & middle school levels along with fellow 8th graders Gianna Bess and Tequilla Mays who helped the Middle School win 3rd Place at the West Kentucky Meet of Champions last year. Also returning from a brief hiatus are lone senior Denecia Smith who placed 9th at State in the 400m Dash as a freshman and sophomore Raekisha Thompson who was one of our top sprinters back in middle school. Newcomers this year include Freshmen Jamie Perez, Sara Kate Rice, Megan Weatherly, and 8th Grader Mary Langford. Many in this athletic group of ladies were members of the High School & Middle School Cheerleading Squads this winter and hope to transfer their strong work ethic onto the track for a shot at both individual and team Regional & State Track Titles.
On the Boys side, the Pilots plan to use their experience to improve on last year’s season and send some athletes to the State Meet. The boys boast a large roster and a number of athletes who specialize in a variety of events which should help them breakout as a team in the Region. Top returnees for Fulton County include: senior – James Moffatt who is a regular in the 400m & 800m Relays, juniors - Antoine Gaston a Long & Triple Jump specialist the last 3 years will focus more on sprint events, Chaz Dial a natural athlete running Sprints & Relays, and Shot Put & Discus Thrower Tari Bishop could be a contender for a State bid. The Pilots will also benefit from leadership and experience with a sophomore class that has come into their own after 4 years of being the youngest team in the Region. Tony Udley placed 12th at State in the 400m Dash last year and Ladrekus Moffatt placed 4th in the 400m Dash at last year’s Regional meet. Classmates Nathan Grasfeder& Lance Mudd will specialize in the Middle and Long Distance events and relays after participating in Cross Country this past fall. Freshman Mitchell Mulcahy is last year's most improved athlete and has already shown improvement in his Discus technique and plans to be in the top 6 at the Region. 8th graders Jance Snisky, Tyler Glosson, and Tevin Crumble return for the Middle School to help them prepare for high school football next year. Newcomers to the team include senior exchange student from Germany Felix Wartemann who ran Cross Country in the fall and plans to run distance events this spring, junior Jonathan Roberson a standout football & basketball player who will sprint and high jump for the Pilots, sophomores Dariquez Scott and Brandon Winters who ran in middle school will be back to throw and run, 7th graders Leonard Smith and Sam Barfield along with 8th graders Shun Udley and Victor King will help give depth to the team as middle school sprinters while Sean Edgin will try his hand at the Shot Put & Discus.
