    History of the Southern Seahawks

    The Beginning

One cold winter evening during the month of December 2001, the first meeting of what would evolve into the Southern Seahawks was held at Sunnyside Park Community Center. The minds at work belonged to Terrill Thomas, Judy Harris and Natasha Boss. Later participants included Sheri Randle, Nelson Green, and Jody. The initial practice site was at Mt. Carmel Catholic High School located at 6700 Mount Carmel Drive Houston, Texas 77087. Our very first practice had only seventeen participants. Demetrice Johnson came on board to help with the cheerleaders after two volunteers left. Terrill Thomas first recruited Jesse Anderson, Tracey Fontenot, Royce Thompson, DeAndre Johnson, and Richard Hamilton to assume some of the initial coaching positions. During the summer of 2002, the Seahawks moved their practice site from Mt. Carmel to Scottcrest Park located at the intersection of Airport Blvd. and Rosehaven due to the majority of Seahawks youth living nearby. The total number of participants during the first year grew to approximately 75.

2002 Greater Houston Pop Warner Football Season Debut

The flag team, led by Richard Hamilton, DeAndre Johnson, and Brian LaFluer set the foundation for the future by having a competitive team with a chance to win almost every game and showing constant improvement from game to game in 2002. The Junior Peewee Team led by Jesse Anderson, and Nelson Green, made the playoffs and caught the attention of several well-established teams in 2002. The Junior Midget team led by Terrill Thomas, Tracy Fontenot, and Royce Thompson, was also very competitive as they captured the city championship and advanced to the second round of the regional playoffs in 2002. The cheer squads were also very competitive as the young ladies on the flag cheer squads placed third in the local cheer competition.

2003 Greater Houston Pop Warner Football Season

The number of youth participants grew from 75 to approximately 150 in 2003 as word spread about the success of the first year of the Seahawks. Two flag teams were fielded as approximately 30 flag kids signed. Stephanie Smith in her first year coached the 5 to 6 year old team to two impressive victories with only 7 players, with one of those victories coming against a well-established team and set the flag division on notice that the 2004 Seahawks flag program will be dominant. Deandre Johnson in his first year as a head coach led the 7 year old team to two victories in the most competitive flag division and gave his team a chance to win in every game. The Mitey Mite team led by Richard Hamilton and Willie Hebert, made the playoffs as the fourth place team and was undefeated through the first four games of the season. The Junior Peewee team, led by Jesse Anderson, Royce Thompson, John Cherry, and Lynette Brown, made the playoffs as the third place team and was only eliminated due to a technicality from advancing to the second round. The Junior Midget team, led by Terrill Thomas, Tracy Fontenot and Evel Simien, fielded a very competitive team in 2003. The cheer squads continued their legacy of success as the flag cheer squad won first place, the junior peewee cheer squad won third place, and the junior midget cheer squad won first place in the local cheer competition. The Junior Peewee and Junior Midget Cheer squads had a good performance in the 2003 regional competition held in Beaumont, Texas.

2004 Greater Houston Pop Warner Football Season

In 2004, the Seahawks organization continued their legacy of success and also continued to be a force to be reckoned with. All football team divisions made it to the playoffs, the Jr. Peewee and Jr Midget cheer squads made an excellent showing at local competition and the Jr. Peewee squad made their presence known in Regional competition in Beaumont.

Reorganization and structural changes had no affect on the continued success of the Southern Seahawks. A new league brings about new changes and continued success. We are now a well established team  in the community, word has been spread about the Southern Seahawks. It was our time to shine and shine we did;In Florida. Our 12 and under division won regional playoffs and went on to be crowned National Champions. The 11 and under division can't be counted out, they also won the regional playoffs and went on to win third in the Nation. Our kids time in the spotlight didn't stop there. Our 11 and under cheer squad had a tough time getting started this season. But that didn't stop our 15 and under cheer squad from succeeding and bringing home the 2nd  runner-up trophy in the Nation.

                                         2007  Return to Pop Warner

With a National Championship Title under our belt we decided to return to where it all began, Pop Warner Little Scholars. Returning to Pop Warner was a move for the advancement of our kids, now that we are home it is once again time to prove ourselves worthy of being Seahawks. With the Regional Championship Title added to our list of accomplishments, proving ourselves is the least of our concerns. We look forward to our upcoming season.
