B FOOTBALL OPENS WITH A 'W'
Spartan B Football started their season off in fine fashion with a win over Holy Trinity on Friday September 19 at American Martyrs in Manhattan Beach. Kyle Harris sparked the Spartan offense on the first play of the game with a 75 yard kickoff return. Josiah Sheffie ran for a conversion putting the Spartans up 7-0. Holy Trinity came back and the Spartan found themselves down, but not for long. Safety Tosin O'seni made a key defensive stop. On the next play, Kyle Harris intercepted a Trinity pass and took it "to the house". There was no looking back for the B team. Kyle scored another touchdown in the second half and the Spartans held on to win 20-14. Anchored by veterans Anthony Beltran , Brandon Burgoyne and Tony Hill, the defense comprised of James McClune, Brandon Redmond, Josh Patterson, Andy Gonzalez and Blair Langley played exceptionally well. On the offensive side Rediet Teferi and Nethaniel Palomino made key blocks that allowed Spartan running backs to gain big yardage. Last but not least, first year QB, Austin Williams rushed for over 70 yards.

Spartans Gather Around Coach Billups
Varsity Football Performs Well at HT Tournament
St. Jerome is an annual participant at the Holy Trinity Jamboree that takes place at Bogdanovich Park in San Pedro. On Saturday, the team played three pool games -- beating Resurrection and St. Augustine but losing a tough one to Holy Trinity by a 6 to 0 score. Holy Trinity, a periennial flag football power, won on a 4th down pass into the end zone that was batted away by a Spartan defender into the hands of an unexpectant Trinity receiver. By virtue of its second place finish in its pool, the Spartans returned on Sunday. They opened against Nativity of Torrance who scored two quick touchdowns and that was the difference. In the loser's bracket, the Spartans beat St. Benedict 8 to 6. All in all, the Spartan coaches were pleased with the performance and believe that these games will help them when conference begins on September 20 against St. Mark.
