INTRO to "AWARDS/RECOGNITION"
SPECIAL EFFORTS = SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Some teams and leagues believe in traditional trophies/crests to salute typical success – such as the “Top Scorer” etc. In contrast, our organization has also created some unique recognition awards – to acknowledge extraordinary effort in other important aspects of the Thundering Herd activities. Amongst other items, our overall program of recognition also includes the following

Honours Program
MISSION STATEMENT
To recognize student athletes who have excelled both academically in the search for education, and athletically in their search for excellence on the football field
ELIGIBILITY
All players from the ages 12 to 19 as of June 1st of the playing year, who are members in good standing with Ontario Football Alliance are welcome to participate (Members of the Thundering Herd F.C. are eligible)
CRITERIA
Academics:
To be eligible for the Honours Program each candidate must provide a transcript of his marks. The overall percentage minimum accepted would be a “B” A\average. (Ontario Scholastic Grading). Marks apply to all levels of this Honours program.
Athletically:
The athletic ability of each player will be determined by the player evaluation form that has been completed by an opposition coach. A panel of their coaches will review all of these issues with the final decision made by Ontario Tackle Football.
LEVELS
Honours Graduate:
50 top athletes: Two per position and two from special teams including kicking. Must be in their final year of high school within the playing year to participate.
Honours Pre-Graduate:
50 top athletes: Two per position and two from special teams including from kicking. Must be graduating either from grade 10 or 11 within the playing year to participate.
Honours Freshman:
50 top athletes: Two per each position (Offence & Defence) and two from Special Teams including Kicking. Must play at the Jr. Varsity (or equivalent aged) team, within the playing year.
Honours Minor:
50 top athletes: Two per each position (Offence & Defence) and two from Special Teams including Kicking. Must play on a Peewee (or equivalent aged) team, within the playing year. This level will be administered by the local organizations, who have a minimum of 4 teams at this level. Administration will come under the direction of Ontario Tackle Football.

"GOLDEN SLEDGEHAMMER AWARD"
Mississauga Thundering Herd Football
During the season, a “Golden SledgeHammer” winner will be periodically announced & awarded in the team’s presence. This unique award represents special efforts during a game - but esp. those of the in-week PRACTICES. In summary, it is primarily a recognition of the preparation effort, topped off with an effective game.
Every player is eligible for this particular award (although scoring, yardage, interceptions, etc., are NOT considerations), Chosen by THFC Coaches, the honouree will be the individual who best exhibits qualities symbolic of:

Discipline, Focus & Consistent Work Ethic!!
Gritty Effort with Solid Practice & Play!!
Character & Leadership!!
This distinctive “Golden Sledge” remains in personal custody of the recipient until a subsequent winner is announced during the next selection period. At the season’s conclusion, the Coaches will then decide on one of these acclaimed in-season winners, by means of a grading system.
For their special efforts during the overall season, the chosen individual will earn this year’s GSH Award on a permanent basis.
