Football Information

What skills will Football players learn?

Football players will be taught football skills appropriate for their age and level.  Pop Warner adjusts game rules progressively for younger to older age teams to ensure safety and appropriate skill progression.  The rules of play are taught as well as skills and strategies for offense and defense.  The overall conditioning and athletic fitness of each player is important for their safety, growth and team success.  Most of all we expect players to display good sportsmanship with their fellow athletes and respectful conduct with the coaching staff at all times.

What is the Practice and Game schedule?

For the safety of all athletes, players  are expected to regularly attend practices and games. We do recognize there are unavoidable issues, especially due to unplanned medical events and prior commitments (especially in August).  Please clear all conflicts with your coaches or the commissioners.   MYFCA will make every effort to accommodate all football players and who commit to participate.   However, athletes who can not commit to attend on a regular basis may be asked to leave the team for repeated un-excused absences.

Please see the Practice and Game schedule tab for more information or check with your Coach.

What are the obligations for Football games?

Football players will participate in one football game each Sunday during the regular eight-week season (see Practice and Game schedule tab for more information).  Approximately half of the games are at home (MHS) and half are away (car pools are arranged). We play in all weather conditions unless a game is called off by officials due to safety reasons.  Depending on team level and game record during regular season, teams may be eligible for post-season playoffs in November and the National championship at Walt Disney World in Orlando in December.  Montgomery Wildcats has high achieving players and we typically advance one or more teams to Jersey Valley conference playoffs, and/or state/regional playoff games.

How are Football team assignments determined?

There are no try-outs for Pop Warner Football.  Team placements are designed to ensure the safety of players and are determined by strict adherence to the Pop Warner age and weight matrix (Click here for Pop Warner Age & Weight Matrix).  The age of the player on July 31st determines their placement in the age matrix.  Proof of age is required at registration and official weigh-in procedures will be followed.  Pop Warner also regulates that we may have only 35 players on each squad.  MYFCA will make every effort to accommodate all football players who commit to participate.

What position will each player be assigned to?

Assignments to team positions are made at the discretion of the coaching staff only – the safety of all athletes is the number one consideration in player assignments.  Players will be given the opportunity to practice various skills for offense and defense, and assigned to position(s) that are best suited for their development and skill level.   Players may be assigned to rotate among multiple positions or to a single position at the discretion of the coaching staff.

What type of equipment do the Football players need?

The league will provide full protective equipment for each football player along with uniforms.  Football players will need to buy their own shoes and protective cup.
