Practice Times & Tips
Practice Time & Day
1st Day of Practice is Saturday, August 1, 2009. Practice will be from 9am - 11:15am. There will be No Practice on Sunday, Aug. 2nd. During the rest of the month of August, practices will take place Monday through Friday. Start time is at 6:00pm SHARP and end at 8:15pm. Please make every effort to get your child to practice ON TIME.
The first 5 practices are REQUIRED for physical conditioning. Any players who miss all or part of these practices will have to make them up before they can participate in any blocking or tackling drills. (This will put the player behind the rest of the team and will jeopardize their role on the team.) Additionally, being late or missing practice will result in extra conditioning, less playing time, and possible loss of spot on the team.
After Labor Day weekend, practices will be limited to only three days per week (specific days TBD).
Stormy Weather
Just because it looks like it's going to storm or even might be raining at your house. You still need to bring your child to practice. You never know, it might be sunny over at the Bandit field.
Practice Tips
The weather is almost certain to be hot and humid. Learning to deal with the discomfort and potential dangers associated with our weather is a fact of life for any athlete, in any sport here in SW Florida. The following guidelines will help you and your athlete learn to deal with the heat.
The 2 most common causes of Heat Sickness are 1 - Not being used to strenuous exercise in the hot weather, and 2 - not drinking enough water.
There are several other factors, such as being out of shape, being over weight, bad eating habits or wearing the wrong type of clothing.
So as parents we need to teach our athletes how to adjust to the hot weather while participating in sports. We must make sure they follow the recommendations from several sports medicine programs throughout Florida listed below.
1. Don't eat a big meal before practice. Eat something light. Fruit, salad, veggies, etc.
2. Be Hydrated! This doesn't mean, drink half a gallon of water at 5:45pm. You need to start drinking water few hours before practice and continue to drink even after practice. Soda and sugar filled drinks are of NO value to you, as it takes longer for the water in the drinks to be absorbed into your system. Gatorade and sports drinks are best after practice.
*Dehydration could effect the way your child feels and performs during practices and may increase the risk of injury.
3. Begin to condition yourself now. (Football Conditioning Camp starts June 27th at 9am at the Bandit Field)
4. Start exercising the same time practice will be. (6:00pm)
5. Gradually increase your exercise time by 5 minutes a day for the last weeks in July.
6. Remember working out in the gym is not going to help you adjust to the heat and humidity.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
