POST 25 DEFEATS EAST BRUNSWICK 5-4
In our season opener Post 25 prevailed over rival East Brunswick by the score of 5-4. After weeks of rain, Post 25's bats seemed a little rusty, but came through with timely hits and gutty pitching to get the job done. The game started as a pitchers duel with our starting and winning pitcher Steven Curry, (4 2/3 ip, 4 k's, 3 hits) shutting out EB thru the first 4 frames. However the EB pitcher seemed tough as well, limiting our team to a bunt single by Greg "Gil" Kammerer in the 1st inning. Until the bottom of the 4th, when Post 25 struck for all 5 of our runs. Garrett Andren started the inning with a long double to left field, Richie Smith walked, as did Jeff Dougherty to load the bases with no outs. Curry worked out a walk to force in the first run. Kyle Drake followed with a hard hit RBI single up the middle to score Smith. Anthony Addone walked to force in yet another run to make the score 3-0. That brought up Steve Abbott, who doubled home Curry and Drake to make the score 5-0 at the end of 4 innings. What appeared to be a comfortable lead quickly evaporated in the top of the 5th when East Brunswick staged a comeback to turn a walk, a hit batter, and 2 base hits into 3 runs of their own closing the score to 5-3. Two walks later loaded the bases. At that point Coach K made a pitching change bringing in Willie Beard, or as the unruly East Brunswick bench referred to him as "fresh meat". Beard escaped the bases loaded jam when he got the next batter to pop up to end the threat. East Brunswick added another run in the bottom of the 6th on a rbi bunt to make the score 5-4. In the top of the 7th Smith made a nice diving grab of a sinking liner for the first out. but following a hit batter and a single, East Brunswick had the tying and go ahead runs on base with only 1 out. Beard bore down to strike out the final 2 batters to end the game and pick up the save.
What a great way to start the season with a opening win over a loud EB team. Keep up the good teamwork guys!!! Lets get those bats going soon though. After the game a jubilant Coach Kammerer invited the team to a party at the Legion and Coach Kijula went bareback as he tore off a EB shirt and danced on it in celebration.

    EDISON BESTS POST 25 10-3

POST 25 THUMPS JFK GREEN 7-3
With a game time temperature of 95 degrees, Post 25's bats came to life and combined with excellent pitching to score a 7-3 win over JFK Green at Michelin Field. The Post 25 pitching combination of starter Steven Curry, winning pitcher Anthony Addone, and Steve Abbott, who picked up the save, combined to hold JFK hitless in the contest. JFK drew first blood in the top of the opening inning and scored 2 runs on a couple of fielding blunders to take a 2-0 lead. That lead was short lived however as Post 25 came back in the bottom of the frame to score 3 runs. Abbott started things off with a walk, Greg "Gil" Kammerer sacrificed Abbott to second, Garrett Andren legged out a single and stole second. That brought up Richie Smith who "hammered" a line drive 3 run home run to right center to give Post 25 a 3-2 lead. After pitching 3 fine innings Curry (4k's, 0 er), was relieved by Addone who threw a scoreless frame in the top of the 4th.In the bottom of the 4th, Abbott singled, stole second, took third on an overthrow and was brought home on a beautiful squeeze bunt by Kammerer which proved to be the game winning RBI. Abbott came on to pitch in the top of the 5th and pitched 2 strong innings to pick up the save. Post 25 added 3 insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th when Smith started the frame off with a line single to center, Kyle Drake singled and stole 2nd, moving Smith to 3rd. Jeff Dougherty walked for the second time. Curry then hit a sac fly to score Smith, while Drake was thrown out on a close play at 3rd. Willie Beard singled putting runners on 1st and 3rd. Pinch hitter John Keseley delivered a rbi single to score pinch runner Brennen Gerhart. Abbott capped the scoring with a single to score Beard to make the score 7-2 in favor of Post 25. JFK added a meaningless run in their last at bat without a hit to make the final score 7-3. Post 25 pitchers, Curry, Addone and Abbott combined on the no hitter, with the aid of a outstanding defensive effort in the heat by Dougherty at catcher, Beard at 3b, and John Berner at 2b. The win puts Post 25's record at 2-1 on the season, and hopefully with continued good baseball weather, can keep their bats hot for the upcoming games. Great job guys.

POST 25 TOPS NORTH BRUNSWICK 5-2
In another game played in 95+ degree heat, Post 25 defeated North Brunswick 5-2. Post 25's bats started out as hot as the weather in the top of the first as they used 6 hits to score 4 runs. Steve Abbott started things off with a single, stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on a single by Richie "Big Ru" Smith. Kyle "Dirk" Drake continued his torrid hitting with a single up the middle to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Jeff "Doc" Dougherty singled to score Smith to make the score 2-0. Steve "Lefty" Curry blasted a double to left center to drive in "Dirk" and pinch runner Mikey Hohman who scored all the way from 1st base. Willie Beard singled, but Curry was cut down on a nice throw to the plate to end the inning with the score 4-0. In the top of the 2nd Post 25 added another run when Anthony Addone walked and stole 2nd, Greg "Gil" Kammerer put down a sac bunt, and Garrett "G-Man" Andren hit a rbi single to center to give the visitors a 5-0 lead after 2 innings of play. Post 25's bats seemed to cool off after that though. Starting and winning pitcher Beard was tough on the mound allowing only 1 hit thru the first 4 innings. In the 5th, Beard, who finished with(6k's, 5 hits, & 0 bb)appeared to tire as North Brunswick scored their only 2 runs. Curry came on in relief and smoked the NB batters the final 2 innings to pick up the save. "Doc" once again did an excellent job behind the plate for the team.
Yet another great job guys, under extreme conditions. It would've been nice to have scored more runs. But the bottom line is the final score, and once again, we did enough to gain the victory, which is what counts. Keep up the great work guys!

POST 25 BANGS OUT 10-4 WIN vs SOUTH RIVER
The Post 25 team continued their hot play with a 10-4 win over South River. Starting pitcher Steve Abbott starred at the plate as well, going 3-4 with 3 rbi's and launched a home run over the left field fence. Post 25 jumped out early as they scored 4 runs in the top of the first when Abbott led off with a single, stole 2nd, and Garrett "G" Andren singled. Richie "Big Rue" Smith singled to drive in Abbott. Kyle "Dirk" Drake, a virtual hitting machine this year, singled to score Andren. Jeff "Doc" Dougherty singled to score Drake to make the score 4-0. Post 25 resumed their scoring in the top of the 3rd when Smith led off with a long double, Drake singled, Dougherty hit a sac fly to score Smith, Steve Curry doubled to drive in Drake, and John "Big Bopper" Kesely, 3-4 on the day, singled to score Curry. Post 25 remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th when Kesely started the inning off with a single and stole 2nd, John Berner walked, and Abbott blasted a long, 3 run home run. Greg "Gil" Kammerer, 2-4 on the day, lined a double and Drake added his 3rd hit of the game to close out the scoring. Defensively,"Scoop" Berner made two outstanding plays at shortstop, robbing South River of basehits. Meanwhile on the mound, starter Abbott pitched 3 strong innings, notching 4 k's, and scattering 6 hits, to pick up the win. Andren came on in relief, pitching 1 hit ball, hurling 4 scoreless innings, while recording 2 k's to pick up the save.
The team is on a roll!!! Lets keep up the good work and continue the strong hitting, solid defense, and great pitching in the coming games.

    SHORTHANDED SQUAD FALLS TO FORDS

POST 25 FALLS 4-1 VS MIDDLESEX

POST 25 RALLIES TO BEAT ST JOES 10-8
In thrilling fashion Post 25 staged a late inning comeback to upend aSt Joes 10-8. Post 25 fell behind early as a combination of timely hitting, and horrid fielding staked St Joes an early 5-0 lead after 2 innings of play. Post 25 could manage only 3 hits, singles by Garrett "G" Andren, Richie "Big Rue" Smith, and Matt "Jewels" Kijula, thru the first 4 frames. Then in the top of the 5th Post 25 bats came to life as Mike "Taz" Hohman singled to leftfield, and came around to score on Andren's 2nd hit of the game for the 1st run. Smith added his 2nd hit, a rbi single to score Andren. Then Steve "Lefty" Curry launched a long 2 run HR over the leftfield fence to make the score 5-4. St Joes added a run in the bottom of the inning to take a shortlived 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the 6th, Willie Beard walked, Taz Hohman singled for his 2nd hit of the game. Greg "Gil" Kammerer walked to load the bases. Kyle "Dirk" Drake smacked a 2 rbi double to left center. Smith drew a walk and Curry added a 2 rbi single. Kijula lined a 2 rbi double in the gap in right center to give Post 25 a 10-6 lead. Starting pitcher Kijula was the victim of some horrid fielding as he pitched well the first 3 innings allowing only 1 earned run. Dan "The Man" Hohman came on in the 4th, and retired the side in order as he picked off a Joe's player who had reached on an error. Curry came on to pitch the final 3 innings for the win, as he allowed only 1 hit while striking out 3 batters. The late inning comeback overshadowed some shaky fielding, and hopefully will serve as a reminder to keep playing hard for a whole 7 innings. "The game ain't over till it's over!"

POST 25 BOWS TO PERTH AMBOY 6-5

Anthony Addone singled to drive in 2 more runs, Danny Hohman drove a rbi single to score his brother Mike. Kijula singled to score Addone, and Abbott lofted a sac fly to make the score 13-0. Tonight was a true team effort as Post 25 was able to empty the bench and everyone contributed to the victory. Lets keep up the great work as the team is heading into the final week of the season!!!

Post 25 LOSES TO HOLMDEL 13-4

    POST 25 WALLOPS METUCHEN 11-2
Post 25 defeated Metuchen by a score of 11-2 with an offensive onslaught and strong pitching. Steve Abbott started the game off with a long ground rule double that bounced over the left field fence, and scored immediately when Greg "Gil" Kammerer lined a rbi single up the middle to stake Post 25 to a 1-0 lead. Metuchen bounced back to score a run in the bottom of the 1st to knot the score at 1 all. Metuchen added a run in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 2-1 lead. That was until the top of the 4th inning, when Post 25 exploded for 7 runs. Steve "Lefty" Curry started the big inning off with a sharply hit single. Garret "G-Man" Andren followed with a hard hit single. Pitcher Willie Beard scratched out an infield single to load the bases. Matt "Jewels" Kijula drove in Curry and stole 2nd. That brought up Jeff "Doc" Dougherty, who delivered a solid 2 rbi single. Anthony Addone followed with a single and stole 2nd. Steve Abbott stepped to the plate and promptly collected his 2nd ground rule double of the game to drive in 2 more runs. Kyle "Dirk" Drake walked and stole 2nd base. Richie "Big Rue" Smith dropped in a 2 out single to score both Abbott and Drake to give the Post a 8-2 lead after 4 innings of play. In the top of the 5th 2 more runs were added when Andren led off with a base on balls, and John Kesley belted a rbi double. Then Dougherty lined a double in the gap to plate Kesely with the teams 10th run of the game. In the top of the 6th Post 25 scored their final run when Drake singled, and Smith hit a screamer that bounced over the left center field fence for a ground rule double to make the score 11-2. That proved to be more than enough for the pitcher, Beard. Who appeared to get stronger as the game went on, as he tossed a complete game 3 hitter, while striking out 11, including the final 6 consecutive batters to end the game. Defensively the team also played errorless ball which is a key to playing well
Great comeback game guys! This just shows what we are capable of when we play hard and together as a team.

POST 25 BOWS TO SAYREVILLE 5-1

    POST 25 MAULS WOODBRIDGE 13-1
In their first of 2 games for the day, Post 25 mauled a Woodbridge squad by the score of 13-1 at Woodbridge. The game featured an awesome display with the bat and strong pitching and defense. Post 25 jumped to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning when Steve Abbott singled and was brought home by Kyle "Dirk" Drake to give the Post a 1-0 lead. Woodbridge evened the score at 1 all in the bottom of the 1st, but after that it was all Post 25. In the 2nd inning Steve "Lefty" Curry singled, Willie Beard singled and Anthony Addone drove home Curry. In the 3rd inning Abbott belted a triple and scored on a single by Richie "Big Rue" Smith to make the score 3-1. This was another fine effort by the Post 25 team as the team upped their record to 8-7 and keep their playoff hopes alive.

POST 25 NIPS OLD BRIDGE 2-1
In their 2nd game of the day, a shorthanded Post 25 squad rose to the challenge and defeated a good Old Bridge team by the score of 2-1. With only 9 players available the Post once again combined strong pitching, with some timely hitting to gain the win in a home game that was played at Cheesequake. The game remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the bottom of the 3rd inning, when Steve "Big Sexy" Abbott once again started things off with a single, and stole 2nd. Kyle "Dirk" Drake then produced a clutch, 2 out, rbi single to score Abbott and give the team a 1-0 lead. The game remained 1-0 until the 5th when Old Bridge pushed across a run on a fielding miscue. Old Bridge threatened to take the lead when a runner on 3rd attempted to score on a wild pitch, but Drake made a great play in throwing to pitcher Willie "The Kid" Beard to nail the OB player for the final out of the inning to end the threat. Post 25 wasted no time regaining the lead in the bottom of the 5th, when Matt "Jewels" Kijula singled, Greg "Gil" Kammerer hustled out a base hit, and Drake lined a rbi double to score Kijula, with what proved to be the winning run, staking the team to a 2-1 lead after 5 innings. Starting and winning pitcher Beard, gave a tremendous, gutty effort on the mound, throwing his 2nd complete game win in 3 days, notching 12 k's, and scattering 5 hits, for his 4th triumph of the season.
Once again the team, even though shorthanded, rose to the occasion and continue to cling to slim playoff hopes, as they upped their record to 9-7 for the year. The team showed a lot of spirit and desire to achieve this win, once again great work guys!!!
