The ABA 2006 AA playoffs began with the Middlesex Reds holding the #1 seed & the BBQ Outlaws with the #2 seed. Both team were rewarded with a first round bye. The #3 Brooklyn Dodgers, who were able to make the playoffs after contraversy of 2 regular season forfeits, took on the #6 West Orange Wolfpack. The Wolfpack pulled out the upset with a 12-8 victory. The #4 Jersey Jackhammers were matched up with the #5 Clifton Blackstones, where the Blackstones won 7-2. Round 2, the semi-finals had the Reds facing the Wolfpack and the Outlaws vs the Blackstones. The Wolfpack held the Reds close until midway thru the game where the Reds broke it open and won 13-5. The Blackstones vs Outlaws game was chaos even prior to the start of the game. The game was scheduled to start at 7pm and thankfully, a few of the Outlaws went to the field around noon to prep the field only to find out the power was shut off at the field. No power, no lights! Coach O'Rourke scrammbled to get in touch with the Blackstones and pushed the game time up to 5pm. It was questionable whether the game would even be finished due to darkness, and was eventually called but after the Outlaws had a commanding 13-2 lead after 7 innings. The finals matchup was set, the Reds and the Outlaws. This was the pre-season pick of many for the title series. The Reds swept nearly every team in the regular season and only lost 3 games, all coming from the Outlaws. Game 1 of the championship series was on a saturday afternoon and the Outlaws jumped on Reds pitcher Jay Crawford. Mark Lamperiello pitched a great game for the Outlaws and was given run support by Justin Papa's solo home run and Chris Dolan's 3 run double. The Outlaws took the series lead 1-0 with a 8-5 win. Game 2 was held at Healthquest's Jack Cust Stadium on the following night. BBQ had no pitching for the game, with Shane Madding pitching his heart out while battling pain in his shoulder. The Outlaws could not provide Shane with run support against the Reds Kevin Cust. The Reds hitting show took over as the Outlaws rotated pitchers who haven't been on the mound this season and only some who only pitched once or twice this year. The Reds pounded the ball with 6 total home runs and went on to a 15-5 win. With the series knotted at 1 game each, the Outlaws thought they had secured Somerset Patriots Stadium for the final game. But in Reds fashion, the manager refused to play there because "they finally felt at home" after getting their first win against the Outlaws all season. After refusing to play at Patriots Stadium, the Reds manager said the only available time to play at Jack Cust Stadium was Wednesday Aug 30th. The Outlaws were spread all over the area that day due to work and some were questionable of making the game. Coach O'Rourke fought to move the game date but the league ruled to keep it. All the Outlaws found a way to get to the field on time, after all, what we be sweeter than beating the Reds on their "home" field in front of their crowd?! And so came game time and the Outlaws jumped on Kevin Cust right away with big hits from Danny Cuccio, Ryan Caruso, Kyle Sage, Seamus Heaney and Chris Dolan to get an early 3-0 lead in the 1st. Mark Lamperiello pitched a gem allowing no runs thru 4 innings. With game saving play, SS Eric Sucar turned a 6-3 double play with 1 out and bases loaded to end the inning. Now 4-1, Justin Kaiser hit a huge 2 run double to left center that proved to be the game difference. Kaiser then came in to close the game but found some trouble after getting Cust to fly out to center and striking out Reds catcher Jay MacDonald. Loading the bases, the top of the Reds order was up and Jeff Panzarella popped up to CF. The game was over, or was it? MVP Ryan Caruso lost sight of the ball in the lights, landing behind him. The bases cleared and the tying run was now at first base. Kaiser walked Jesse Boles now putting on the winning run. Kaiser fought back and got ahead on Chris Fucci 0-2. After a ball, Kaiser rearded back and gassed one right by Fucci and giving the Outlaws their first championship in only their 3rd season!

    OUTLAWS WIN SERIES!!!
On Wednesday night, the BBQ Outlaws and the Middlesex Reds met for the final game of their three game championship series where Coach O'Rourke announced to the team that Ryan Caruso earned MVP honors from the league! Both teams had plenty of rest after playing 2 games a week and a half ago. Kevin Cust took the hill for the Reds and the Outlaws jumped on him early. In the top of the first with 1 out, BBQ managed to get 3 runs which fired up the large group of BBQ fans. Mark Lamperiello then went to work for BBQ on the mound. Lamp found the strike zone early and was rarely behind in a count. Lamp shut down the Reds offense thru 7, only allowing two runs. Holding onto a 4-1 lead, the Reds had bases loaded with 1 out. Lamp threw on off speed pitch and got the batter to ground into a game saving 6-3 double play by Eric Sucar. In the top of the 7th, Justin Kaiser hit a huge 2 run double to left center to increase the Outlaws lead to 6-1. In the bottom of the 9th, the Outlaws held a 6-2 lead with Kiser now on the mound. BBQ got the first 2 outs easily and only need to last out to secure the championship. But Kaiser got in a bit of trouble and got the bases loaded for the top of the lineup. With a 0-2 count, the Reds #1 batter Jeff Panzarella , popped up to centerfield. It seemed this was an easy pop out and the Outlaws inched toward the mound to begin their celebration. But the lighting at Jack Cust Stadium is awful when it comes to high pop ups and Ryan Caruso lost sight of the ball, dropping in behind him for a bases clearing single. The batter gave up and only managed to get a single instead of running hard and putting himself in scoring position. The score was now 6-5 and the heart of the Reds order coming up. Kaiser then walked the #2 batter Jesse Boles, putting the winning run on base. Kaiser gathered himself, got up 0-2 again on the #3 hitter Chris Fucci and was able to get the strike out to seal the Outlaws victory!!!
At the beginning of this season, the Outlaws lost their teamate Anthony Cuccio in a tradgic accident. When the Outlaws all gathered that night after hearing the news of their friend, they vowed to win the championship for Anthony. BBQ started the season strong but by mid season were in a slump and were in question of even making the playoffs. After a four game losing streak, the Outlaws remembered their promise and began to make a big push for the playoffs by winning their final five games to take the #2 seed. This is the Outlaws first championship, and none would be any sweeter than to do it this season after losing Anthony Cuccio. The Outlaws made a incredible run, winning 8 of their last 9 games. The Reds only 5 losses on the season all came at the hands out the BBQ Outlaws. Biggest thanks goes to Les & Judy for sponsoring the team and throwing the best after party at Ol' West BBQ. Here are the members of your 2006 AA BBQ Outlaws Championship team(in no particular order): Anthony Cuccio (always), Coach Rob O'Rourke, Captain Shane Madding, Justin Papa, Danny Cuccio, Kyle Sage, Ryan Caruso, Chris Dolan, Kris Hayes, Eric Sucar, Seamus Heaney, Pat Conlon, Justin Kaiser & Mark Lamperiello.
The ABA will be holding a league sponsored party for the Outlaws for winning the championship, date & time TBA.

OUTLAWS SPLIT WEEKEND GAMES, SERIES TIED 1-1
This weekend marked the start of the ABA Spring AA championship series for the BBQ Outlaws and the Middlesex Reds. Action kicked off Saturday with the Middlesex Reds coming to Stadium 31 in Clinton, NJ for a 1:30pm game. Though this was played at BBQ's home field, they were the away team. Mark Lamperiello was the starting pitcher for the Outlaws and Jay Crawford for the Reds in game 1. The Reds jumped to a quick 3-0 lead on a 3 run home run to left field. Lamp had a little difficulty in the first inning locating the strike zone, but found it in the 2nd and then continued to shut down the Reds for much of the game. Justin Papa provided a home run of his own in the 3rd to left field as well, bringing the score 3-2. In each inning both teams put runners on base but could not bat them around to the plate. In the top of the 6th with bases loaded, the Reds went to the bullpen and brought in Jason McDonald. The first batter to face McDonals was Chris Dolan. Dolan drove a line drive to right field with a bases clearing double. The Outlaws bats came alive and scored a total of 6 runs in the inning, bringing the score 8-3. Lamperiello continued to pitch a great game and began to tire in the bottom of the 6th. With the Reds quietly scoring 2 runs, manager Rob O'Rourke went to the bullpen and brought in hard throwing Justin Kiser. Kiser managed to shut down the Reds but as things were looking good, the rain began to come down in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. The ball was slick and became difficult to control. Kiser's pitch's sailed high, an easy play to Dolan at 3rd sailed over the Papa's head at 2nd. Any other time in the game and it would have been put in to a rain delay, but because there was only 1 out left in the game the umps decided to play on. Kiser finally got the Reds to fly out to Ryan Caruso in center to end the game, final score 8-5 Outlaws. This was a much needed win as the Outlaws would have no pitching for the following day.
On Sunday, the Outlaws traveled to Flemington, NJ to play of Jack Cust Stadium which is an artificial turf field, including the bases! The only actual dirt on the field is the pitchers mound. The Outlaws brought in Shane Madding to pitch. Shane's shoulder has been sore since his spectacular 9 inning game about a month ago. Right away, the Reds did the same as game 1, a 3 run home run. The Outlaws had no response this time around as the bats were heavy, perhaps from playing a game the day before or their after party at BBQ's... or a combination of both! The game quickly became a rout as the Reds continued to pile on the hits and runs. BBQ was forced to put in Eric Sucar on the mound. Sucar has not pitched since the 3rd week of the season. Sucar faired a little better, but his arm quickly tired. In came Danny Cuccio for his first appearance this season. Cuccio tryed to get the ball in the zone, but being his first time on the mound this year also couldnt last. Ryan Caruso came in for one batter to get the last out. The Reds came to hit, and did just that. Jay Evans crushed 3 home runs and just missed a 4th. In total, there were 7 home runs by the Reds. The bright spot on the day was Kyle Sage's 3 run home run to left field. Final score was 15-5.
It all comes down to game 3. The Reds finally beat the Outlaws for the first time in five chances this season. Game 3 location is TBA, a great location is being worked on and was previously agreed by both teams, though after the Reds win are looking to change back the Jack Cust Stadium......

    CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES SET
The outlaws are the home team in this late summer's evening classic to determine who will move on to the championship series.

As the Clifton squad moves into town off a first round win they look to upset the 2nd seeded Outlaws. But if Starting pitcher for the game Mark Lamperiello and red hot at the plate center fielder Ryan Caruso (league leader in hitting 5HRS) have anything to say about it this will be sweet redemption for the BBQ BOYS.

When we caught up with coach O'Rourke for comment he had this to say "the guys are ready.. we had to battle to get to this point..and be damn sure we will battle to keep it." interviewer: "well coach sounds like the squad knows what has to be done" C.O'R "we have always known .. now we are just doing it.. no more questions.. "

The outlaws had to play a triple header two weeks ago to lock up a playoff spot late in the season .. they swept all three and then won a deciding game last Friday to secure the 2nd place finish and a 1st rd bye. The Middlesex Reds whom the Outlaw took three games from and the only three losses for the reds all season took the first place finish in the regular reason. Coming into the season the outlaws had some question marks on the mound missing two key hurlers from last season impressive Eric Swenson on the DL and Jeff "the hook" Hood MIA .. The additions of Mark Lamperiello and Justin Kiser have solidified the rotation rounded off bye Shane Mading Ryan Caruso and Seamus Heaney. Other pick ups in the off season new to the league are Eric Sucar, Chase halsey, Pat Conlon, and Rob Hunt. The loss of a member of the BBQ family has brought out emotions in the squad that our friend would have been proud of.

The glory days BBQ Outlaws baseball team is ready to step to the plate be there to support the boys.

I leave you with a quote from Dr Archibald "Moonlight" Graham: "What I want is too stare down the pitcher. To stare him down, and just as he goes into his windup, wink. Make him think you know something he doesn't. That's what I wish for. Chance to squint at a sky so blue that it hurts your eyes just to look at it. To feel the tingling in your arm as you connect with the ball. To run the bases - stretch a double into a triple, and flop face-first into third, wrap your arms around the bag. That's my wish"

Rounding out the squad for the playoffs: (players eligible to play)
Rob O'Rourke (coach, skip, Rob O) Making plays in the OF and on base paths he Rallied squad for a late season run 2nd overall. His squad will be ready.
Kyle Sage (Power House) either ripping line drives or slapping a guy at first on a pick off .. he makes u pay when you mess-up.
Shane Mading (the ole south paw, captain) crafty bastard ..the hook is like a snake..it'll sneak up and get ya
Justin Kiser (Flame throwing reliever) top 15 in league hitting (3HRS) Brings the smoke at bat and on the mound

Pat Conlon (Meat) the rookie on the squad conlon has proven an asset at bat and field as well as in the dug out
Kris Hayes (steady Eddie) Holds the catcher spot down day in day out.. La Douca La BBQ .. La Hayes man
Eric Sucar (Mr.. Utility) at Pitcher, catcher, or any spot infield or out ..he brings the tight defense he is known for. As well as good pickles

On the bubble: Chase Halsey (Jarhead) , Rob Hunt (Hunt ICE) . **May be short of at bats to make a playoff appearance.

In other action the Middlesex reds will be battling the west orange wolf pack this Sunday as well. The winner of that game will face off in the finals against the Outlaws/Blackstone's baseball squad next week.
