The Matthew Brightbill Scholarship Fund

When Bill and Linda Brightbill lost their son Matthew in a car accident, they knew they wanted to leave a legacy in honor of their son. They chose Penn State Harrisburg’s unique Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology program to benefit from their son’s permanently endowed scholarship. This program provides the basic education required for the structural engineer and construction profession. Students learn the basic general engineering concepts needed for this major with emphasis on the fundamentals, structural design principles, and construction techniques through required course work. They are given the opportunity to focus in a discipline of construction management or structural design through a selected option or choose a broad general option.

The effort to endow the scholarship began a number of years ago by way of a golf outing conducted by the Brightbill family. Now, a group of Matthew's friends have taken the lead and are making plans for the event's success to continue. Tom Posavec, who earned a bachelor's degree in Finance from the Harrisburg campus in 1993, and Rick Wagner, Dave Schell, Matt Rutter and Toney Fedullo are continuing the effort to raise the funds needed to endow the Matthew D. Brightbill Memorial Scholarship.
A worthy student in the Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology major is chosen each year and the endowment will grow so that every year in perpetuity students will be given Matthew Brightbill Memorial Scholarships.

For 2006, Timothy Carre received the scholarship and offered these words of thanks: “I was a contractor for many years before returning to school to complete my formal education. After investigating the Structural Design and Construction Engineering program at Penn State Harrisburg, I considered Penn State Harrisburg my only choice. It is both and honor and a privilege to not only be considered to receive this award, but to have been selected to receive it. Thank you.”
