T.R.U.S.T

Teaching Respect, Unity, and Sportsmanship through Teamwork

Mission Statement

In our continuing effort to create community through people, parks and programs, the Recreation Department will strive to provide quality activities that are safe, fair and enriching for all of its participants, spectators and administrators. This philosophy will be implemented through the T.R.U.S.T program, which focuses on teaching respect, unity, and sportsmanship through teamwork.

Community Expectations

The Carlsbad Recreation Department requires its staff, participants, spectators, and neighbors to recognize the following expectations in order to maintain a healthy community:

We T.R.U.S.T that you will maintain a safe and positive environment
We T.R.U.S.T that you will treat every individual with courtesy and respect
We T.R.U.S.T that you will honor the rules established for each activity
We T.R.U.S.T that you will demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship at all times

City of Carlsbad Youth & Adult Sports- Opportunities to Grow

Youth Sports
Providing children of all ages exposure to a variety of sports in an environment where they can grow, both mentally and physically, is the main objective of Carlsbad's Youth Sports Division.  Through the Youth Basketball Program, "Pee-Wee' Indoor Soccer, as well as its sports camps, participants are instructed on the fundamentals of the game in a setting that focuses on sportsmanship.
For several years now, the Youth Sports Division has collaborated with the National Alliance for Youth Sports to train all coaches, parents and officials in issues surrounding today's youth athletics.
Results have been outstanding, and the support from the community has been nothing but positive.  These trainings were implemented as a means of spreading a philosophy often times lost in the excitement of a game.  It brings the spotlight back to the children, back to sports at a grassroots level in its purest form.  We would all  much rather see a smile on a child's face from his first base hit than a frown for missing a lay-up.
Recent studies have shown that negative experiences cause 70% of children to quit participating in youth sports by age 13.  In Carlsbad, we want to reverse that trend and have more children return due to positive experiences.
"Playing sports doesn't teach character.  A good coach does."
Upcoming Programs to look for:
-Carlsbad Youth Basketball tips off with registration evaluations in mid-September, with practices strarting in November and games in December-March.
-Volunteer coaches needed.  For information, please call 434-2989.
-Winter camps: Recreation Department Baseball Camp at the Chase Field complex and Lacrosse Camp at Poinsettia Park.

Adult Sports
The Adult Sports Division currently offers three types of team sports.  Adults 18 and older can participate in softball, basketball, and soccer leagues with games being conducted at Pine, Stagecoach, Poinsettia, and Calavera Hills Parks.  Games are played weekday evenings.  There are two seasons; the Spring season runs from February-June, and the Fall season runs from August-November.  The summer months will be filled with tournaments in softball, soccer, and    3 on 3 basketball.

Teaching Respect and Unity through Sportsmanship and Teamwork: The T.R.U.S.T Program
To educate participants with the T.R.U.S.T Program, the Adult Sports Division requires all team managers to attend a managers meeting, sign a code of conduct, abide by the new sportsmanship rules, and watch a sportsmanship video.  Team managers are required to educate and inform their team members of the department's sportsmanship philosophy and rules and regulations.
This year, we are expanding our Sportsmanship Program and utilizing the department's T.R.U.S.T Program to include all participants.  This will involve signing a code of ethics that must be read and understood before a child/adult is registered for a program. The code of ethics establishes guidelines to ensure that all players are treated with respect through teamwork and sportsmanship.
