Please check the updated schedule on the Plex Web site http://irmo-ice.ezleagues.ezfacility.com/schedule.aspx?facility_id=450   for changes. Saturday June 20th will be the last day. We will have the mites and squirts play at 7:10am with the pee wee - midget final games to follow. I would like to see everyone here for a full morning of hockey. There will also be a Breakfast fundraiser here run by our IIHF and Palmetto Skate Club.

For Tuesday June 16th mites and squirts ice time, I would like to invite the elite mites and squirts to skate as well. This will give us a chance to get everyone together, possibly for some games.

Going into next session and next year, all USA Hockey Memberships must be on file with the IIHF.  Please give myself or Kim Potts a copy of your 2009-2010 membership.  Go to

Wise Words From Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports
Have a self-control routine and practice it. When someone cuts you off in traffic, it's the same feeling as when an official misses a call in your child's game. Practice putting on your calm "game" face.

Before you lose your cool, listen to this hockey dad (and NHL coach!) remind us why our kids play.

Youth hockey heats up

Irmo Ice Hockey Federation works to recruit fans, players

By KARI CROFT
Special to The State

While many are enjoying the warmer weather, a small but dedicated group of young hockey players are bundled up and working hard.

The sport has been growing in popularity since the first league began eight years ago.

Craig Dooley, president of the Irmo Ice Hockey Federation, recognized that most people growing up in the South don’t think about the sport much, but insisted “When you see a game just once, you’re hooked.”

There are two leagues, a House League and a Traveling Team, that practice regularly at the Plex in Irmo. Once a week, around 70 boys and girls ranging from age 4 to 18, meet on the ice to practice.

Coached by dads who have been certified through USA Hockey, the teams prepare for their weekly games. While the House League is open to anyone interested, players must try out to be a part of the Cyclones, the league’s traveling team.

Although the IIHF is in its first year of operation as a merging of programs at the Plex and the Inferno Hockey Association, it has been successful in the recruitment of new fans and players.

“The sport is definitely growing in the region,” said Andy Donato, vice president of IIHF. “Every time you turn around there’s a new kid on the ice.

“Hockey is a great sport; it’s a lot of fun. We want to get people more involved in hockey. Once you start watching it and really begin to see things, you realize it’s a beautiful sport”

" I did not use the word "beautiful" to describe the sport of hockey. That is either a mis-quote or that one belonged to Craig and I was
wrongly credited with it.  I would never choose such an effeminate word to describe hockey.
Thanks, Andy"

Parents and Kids Face Off on Saturday March 28, 2009
Lots of people are "gearing" up to take the ice with the little guys, and not so little guys, this weekend, as we play the Winter Season Finale, Saturday morning. Anyone with extra gear, please bring it along to share with others who dare to brave the likes of the blue line.

Reminder, this is the final game of the season. Please sign up for the Spring season either on line or at the Plex. Spring season begins March 30, 2009. The schedules is posted on the Plex Web site and as soon as it is more clear it will be posted on our very own Web site.

The season end party for the Fall and Winter seasons is still in the process of being finalized as to date and place. The party is open to any and all players who participated in the fall and/or winter season. All players will be recognized and are encouraged to join the fun. Watch your emails and the Web site for more details to come.

PLEASE  BRING CDS, JUMP DRIVES, ETC WITH PICTURES FROM THIS SEASON. SORRY FLOPPY DISKS WON'T WORK. THE DRIVES AND CD WILL BE COPIED AND RETURNED! ALSO, MAKE SURE YOUR PLAYER HAS FILLED OUT THE SHORT QUESTIONNAIRE BEFORE LEAVING ON SATURDAY. WE WILL BE USING THIS INFORMATION FOR THE SEASON END CELEBRATION AND WE DON'T WANT ANYONE TO BE LEFT OUT. The questionnaire will be available on the Web site under the "Handouts" tab for anyone who is not going to be there on Saturday or who participated in the Fall season only, or if you wish to download and fill it out and bring it on Saturday.

And now... a note for the IIHF President:

Don't forget!  Saturday, March 28 is our annual Parent/Kids hockey
games!  This is a great opportunity for parents to get out there and
enjoy the great game of hockey with their kids!  Game times are as
usual, but parents are all invited and encouraged to suit up and join
the fun.

Minimum equipment of helmet, gloves, skates, and stick are required.  It
will be a hockey game, so you may want to have elbow pads and shin
guards as well (Kim suggests a cup and face shield as well).  There *may*
be some gear in the closet that can be loaned out, but there are no guarantees.
If anyone has any spare gear
they can bring for people to borrow, please do so!
If you've never done a parent/kids game, it's a lot of fun for everyone.
See you on the ice!

~President Dooley

SKATING EVENT AND GAME CANCELATION
This Saturday, January 31, 2009 from 12 - 4 the Plex will be hosting a celebration to conclude Skate Across America month. There will be public skating, information about programs, drawings, prizes, give aways and a general promotion of ice skating event. The IIHF will have a table set up at the event to give out information to people interested in hockey. Volunteers are needed to skate in hockey gear, man the table and basically promote the great sport of ice hockey. Anyone who would be able to help for any amount of time please contact Craig Dooley, Tim Wracker or Kim Potts.

Important scheduling note - there will be no games on Saturday, February 21, 2009 or Saturday, February 28, 2009. We anticipate making up these ice times with games against area youth house leagues that we will host on alternate days.

The weekend of February 21, 2009 the Plex will be hosting a U16 travel tournament.
The weekend of February 28, 2009 the Plex will be holding a snowboarding tournament. Both events should be great fun to watch.

DOES IT GET ANY COOLER THAN THIS?
Saturday, December 6, 2008, our very own IIHF mites will play in an exhibition scrimmage during intermission at the Carolina Hurricane's game against the Philadephia Flyers. Imagine the memories these little guys/gals will have!

Our Deepest Sympathy

To the family of Michael Frank. Michael Frank was a referee from Augusta who reffed many hockey games here in Columbia for several years. His son currently plays on the high school team, the Wildcats. Michael will truly be missed and remembered as having been a big part of hockey in the South. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family through this difficult time and wishes that fond memories will bring smiles to their faces in the days ahead.

USC Hockey Teams Up With IIHF
Hockey Families,
The Plex will be hosting USC Hockey games this season. I would ask that our hockey community support the program by attending games and by purchasing tickets. USC players pay money out of their own pocket to play. We all know that money is hard to come by as a student, and they are spending what they have to play hockey. There are a few players on USC who play in our Adult Leagues, and I think we should support them. Remember, this is the only hockey in town right now!!! All proceeds go to both the USC Hockey Club and our inhouse USA Hockey Organization, the IIHF. These proceeds will help develop both programs, and we all will have benefits from that.
~Ryan Petz

Tickets can be purchased online:http://www.plexindoorsports.com/irmoice/events/view/123 or at the Plex. For more information call Ryan Petz (803)513-2133
