FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT UMPIRING FOR MHLL

How do I sign up?
Please contact Alan Polaski at alan.p.polaski@intel.com or (503) 524-4016

Who may umpire?
Anyone 13 years old or older may sign up, however, MHLL believes that umpires should be at least two years older than the age group they are umpiring.

What do I have to learn if I have never umpired before?
We will teach the basic skills required to umpire at the umpire skills clinic prior to the beginning of the spring season (exact date: April 1st & 2nd from 6pm-9pm at Twality Middle School). In addition, we will provide rule books that umpires will be expected to read and become familiar with. We will pair new umpires with experienced umpires who will provide “on-the-job” training in games. For new umpires, we will start with them working minors’ games and eventually progress to working majors’ games as their skills allow.

How much do umpires get paid?
Little League prides itself on being a volunteer organization, and many umpires volunteer their time. In recognition, however, of the time commitment required to become and umpire, and to ensure MHLL gets the best possible umpiring quality, for MAJORS games, MHLL pays umpires $30 per game worked behind the plate, and $20 per game worked in the field, and for MINORS games, MHLL pays $25 per game worked behind the plate, and $15 per game worked in the field. Checks will be distributed at least monthly, and perhaps more frequently if the accounting systems and time constraints allow.

How many games must (or can) I work in a year?
Game assignments will be scheduled by the Umpire Coordinator, Alan Polaski. Umpires will only be assigned for days and times that they choose, and every effort will be made to accommodate as many requested assignments as possible. Depending on the number of candidates, not all requests may be able to be accommodated, but in no event will someone be scheduled for a date or time they did not request. Alan will provide a schedule request form to all interested candidates.

What equipment or clothes do I need to have?
MHLL will provide hats and rulebooks, and make available at each field home plate umpire gear (mask, chest protector, shin guards). The equipment provided at the games is youth sized, so adults will want to obtain their own equipment. Each umpire must wear grey pants and a dark blue shirt (or such other color as an umpire crew may decide for a given game). Other equipment that is suggested is a ball-strike indicator and ball bag. Male umpires who work the plate are required to wear a protective cup. Plate shoes (which protect the top of the foot) are optional.
