Newsday Article on NB v. Longwood Game
Cotter caps N. Babylon's rally over Longwood

BY CHRIS MASCARO | chris.mascaro@newsday.com
10:13 PM EDT, May 27, 2009

Jon Cotter's redemption was served with a flare to centerfield after the faintest of tings off his aluminum bat Wednesday.

The two-out, RBI bloop single in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning hit in No. 9 North Babylon's fourth straight come-from-behind road victory in the playoffs. The Bulldogs scored three runs in their last turn at-bat to clinch a 3-2 win at No. 6 Longwood, and a spot in the Class AA final.

Cotter went from goat to hero in just an inning and a half. With two outs in the home half of the fifth, Cotter overran a fly ball to left. His recovery attempt was in vain, as the ball popped off the heel of his glove, scoring pinch runner Steven Fitzpatrick to put Longwood ahead 2-0.

"I'm thinking I just lost the game," said Cotter, whose natural position is catcher, but who was moved to the outfield midway through the season. "It was the worst feeling of my life followed by the best feeling of my life."

In the seventh, Mike Pinnola narrowly missed a home run when he ripped a double off the fence in left to put runners on second and third for Ciwan McCoy, who lined a double to right to tie the game at 2.

"Top of the world," McCoy said of the feeling he had standing on third base (the rightfielder bobbled the ball, allowing him to advance). "We just had to buckle down."

After a groundout, Cotter got a good enough piece of a 2-and-0 pitch to score McCoy and give the Bulldogs the lead for good. "I put a bad swing on it," Cotter said. "But it got out there."

North Babylon (18-7) had just three hits - two by Kyle Olsen - before the seventh. Brandon McClain kept the Bulldogs off balance by changing speeds, but he pitched to contact - he had no strikeouts despite tossing a complete game - and it hurt him at the worst possible time. "It caught up to him in the seventh," Longwood coach John Davide said.

Longwood (18-8), which will host No. 8 Patchogue-Medford in the losers' bracket final this afternoon, pieced together the game's first run off the hard-throwing Olsen on a double by Kyle Weeks and Jonathon Beekman's sacrifice fly in the fourth.

But Olsen (11 strikeouts) bore down as the game wore on, and struck out five of the last seven hitters to close the door. Said North Babylon coach Jim Mango of Olsen: "He's a man in an 18-year-old's body. He's been our horse all year."

Newsday Article on NB v. Connetquot Game
Olsen leads North Babylon to upset over Connetquot
BY CODY DERESPINA | cody.derespina@newsday.com
9:43 PM EDT, May 21, 2009

Even with a five-run lead, North Babylon's Kyle Olsen looked rattled on the mound.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the starting pitcher walked Connetquot's James Guiliano and gave up a hit to James McKenna. Coach Jim Mango called time and headed for the mound.

"I was literally going out there to take him out. I was 95 percent sure," Mango said. "But when a kid looks you in the eye and says, 'One more batter, coach,' I let him stay in."

Mango never had to make a second trip.

Joe Russo grounded into a double play to end the game and the green grass of the Connetquot field was overrun in a frenzy of blue as No. 9 North Babylon shocked top-seeded Connetquot, 6-1, in the second round of the Suffolk Class AA playoffs yesterday.

North Babylon (16-7) advances to play No. 4 Smithtown West at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Connetquot (18-5) faces No. 11 Floyd in the loser's bracket at 4 p.m. today.

"It's a huge confidence boost," Olsen said. "We were mad getting the nine seed, giving us no home game. It felt like we didn't have any respect. We're from League Four, we're nobody."

If Olsen had a chip on his shoulder, it didn't affect his arm.

He gave up one run on five hits, five walks and one hit-by-pitch, while striking out three in a complete game. It was the first time the Connetquot offense had been held to a single run all season.

In six of his seven innings pitched, Connetquot's James Lomangino limited the North Babylon offense to one run - a solo home run hit by Olsen in the seventh. The home run was just the fifth hit in the past four years at Connequot.

But those other six strong innings couldn't make up for a rocky third inning in which Lomangino allowed five runs. He gave up two hits to open the inning before walking Anthony Repetto to load the bases.

Lomangino walked Olsen for North Babylon's first run of the game and then allowed a two-run single to Mike Pinnola that kicked off the third baseman's glove.

"He struggled with his breaking ball early in the game. He couldn't throw it for strikes," Connetquot coach Bob Ambrosini said. "His changeup was a bit high, and they hit his fastball in that one inning. They had a couple key hits. You've got to give them all the credit in the world."

With a 3-1 lead in hand, Ciwan McCoy stepped to the plate and lofted a pitch out to right-centerfield. The ball caromed off the wall, and McCoy was safe at second with a two-run double to break the game open for North Babylon.

"I thought it was a pop-up at first," McCoy said. "But it just kept going, so I kept running."

All the way to an upset.

Kyle Olsen Selected to Empire State Team
A wonderful season has been topped off by a great accomplishment!! Kyle Olsen led the North Babylon Varsity baseball team in multiple hitting and pitching categories during the 2008 campaign. Olsen garnered All-County honors, was nominated for a gold glove and was the League III silver slugger award winner. This week Kyle was selected as member of the 2008 Empire State Team. Olsen joins Mike Amendola (2005) and John Castellano (1995) as the only North Babylon baseball players selected for this elite team since 1990.
Olsen was a member of the 2007 Blue Knights. Kyle and Rob Griffth teamed up to be a potent duo in middle of the order as they terrorized opponents all last summer. Olsen batted .358 with 3 HRs, 24 runs scored and 25 RBIs in 31 games played. Kyle also had 3 wins and 3 saves and stuck out 36 batters while throwing 33 1/3 innings pitched.
Along with Kyle Olsen, James Lomingino was selected to the Empire State team. Lomangino was a member of the PAL Rangers and played last Labor Day weekend with the Blue Knights. Lomangino tossed a no-hitter and batted .308 during that weekend tournament. Bobby Vitulano was selected as an alternate to team. Vitulano played for the PAL Rangers the past two seasons and is currently a member of the PAL Blue Knights and their leading hitter. Great job by all of the players!!!
The Empire State team won their second consecutive gold medal at the 2007 Empire State Games, the first back-to-back Gold Medal team since 2000-01 and the third back-to-back Gold Medalist team overall (1994-95). The Gold Medalist team increases Long Island's total to seven, the most of any region since the Game's inception in 1990. Since 1990 Long Island has medaled in every year except for two, 1997 and 2003, winning four silver medals and four bronze medals in addition to the seven gold medals. The games begin on July 23rd.
