Ducks Fall to Kent State to End Season

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Jimmy Rider drove in the winning run with a shallow pop fly that landed just inside the left-field foul line in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Kent State to a 3-2 win over Oregon on Monday night and sending the Golden Flashes to their first College World Series.

Rider's hit off Oregon closer Jimmie Sherfy fell just out of the reach of shortstop J.J. Altobelli and left fielder Brett Thomas, who appeared to lose track of the ball when it was hit.

Derek Toadvine scored from second base before Thomas could attempt a throw, making Kent State (46-18) the first team from the Mid-American Conference since Eastern Michigan in 1976 to advance past the NCAA super regional for a trip to Omaha.

Portland State Club Baseball Returns!
Baseball has returned to PSU!

PSU is playing club baseball this year. The Vikings hosted Seattle University this weekend at Marshall High School in SE Portland.

Portland State’s baseball program is in its second year as a club sport. The baseball club is on its way toward joining a conference www.clubbaseball.org with teams like Oregon and Oregon State and hopefully playing in the world series of club baseball in the near future. The club is doing this despite a lack of finances.

With a bright future seemingly in store for baseball at Portland State, President Michael Abramson (Powell Little League, Cleveland HS) hopes for even more.

“I envisioned it as being a Portland State collegiate team,” Abramson said. “My goal was when I graduated it [would be] a school sponsored sports team. Unfortunately, because of Title IX, we can’t do that.”
