HISTORY
The Rego Park 30 & Over Summer Classic originated in 1996 by "Buzz" Matthews and Anthony Connor. Friends since childhood, they began playing ball together back in elementary school. Although they took different paths in high school and college (Buzz - Christ the King / Adelphi University, Anthony - Power Memorial / Eastern Michigan University), they reunited after college and continued playing ball together in various leagues around the city. As their playing days dwindled, they decided to stay close to the game by starting the Rego Park 30 & Over Summer Classic. Their plan was to level the playing field by establishing an age and height requirement. Now in it's thirteenth season, the Rego Park 30 & Over Summer Classic is one of the most successful non-sponsored adult basketball leagues in New York City.
The following is a list of a few notable players who have participated in the league over the years: Greg"Boo" Harvey - St John's U., Derek Brown - St. John's U., Dave Edwards - Georgetown/ Texas A&M, B.J. Carter - Florida, Kenny Patterson - DePaul, Vernon Moore - Creighton, Norm Roberts - coach, St. John's U., Elliot York - Queens College, Eric Brooks - Fordham U., Carl Beckett - St. John's U., and Charles Jones LIU, just to name a few. The league has also seen the likes of many playground legends such as James "Speedy" Williams.
With hard work and diligence, Anthony plans to continue the success of the Rego Park 30 & Over Summer Classic for years to come.
