SW York Beats Fredricksburg
July 15, 2009  --   In an 8-inning affair, SW York topped Lebanon Co. Champs Fredericksburg by a score of 11-7. Fredericksburg won their county tournament and will be hosting and playing in the Region IV tournament starting on Saturday July 18th.

Pitchers David Walker, Eric Moul, Pat Shannon and Jack Kercher allowed a combined 7 runs on 12 hits, 5 walks, and 10 strikeouts. Meanwhile, on offense Nick Wallin paced SW York with a 4 for 5 night and Pat Shannon also chipped in 2 hits, including a triple.

SW York will continue its "End-of-Season" Exhibition Tour by traveling to Muhlenberg on Friday to take on the Muhlenberg A's of Berks County.

Curtain Falls On SW York Season
July 11, 2009  --   The #2 seed SW York became Suburban York's third consecutive upset victim in the York-Adams Championship Tournament, as they were defeated 6 - 3 at SWHS Field. Despite throwing over 160 pitches, the Suburban pitcher, Chris Farscht, baffled SW York hitters the whole game as 17 of the 21 outs recorded were done so with relative ease, including (8 fly ball outs, 6 strikeouts, 2 weak comebackers to the pitcher and 1 sacrifice bunt).

Despite being stymied at the plate, SW York still had opportunities to score runs due to the 8 walks they induced. However, clutch hitting was amiss as 10 runners were stranded on base!

This officially ends the SW York run at a Region IV and State tournament berth. With one scheduled game remaining, July 17 @ Muhlenburg, additional games are a possibility if opposing teams and SW York players are available to participate.

SW York 5 Bermudian Springs 1; One Down, Two to Go!
July 10, 2009  --   SW York dodged a bullet in its opening round game of the York-Adams Championship Tournament. Despite being limited to only 4 hits, SW York was helped by a porous Bermudian defense, aggressive baserunning (swiping 7 bases) and a couple timely hits by Colin Porter and Kurt Seiders to upend #9 seed Bermudian by a score of 5-1.

On the mound, Brian Bossom showed the "calm, cool and collectiveness" of a seasoned veteran. Throwing a barrage of fastballs and curveballs, Bossom worked out of (3) SW York errors and limited the Bermudian hitters to only 5 hits, fanning 8 and walking just 1 (in the 7th).

SW York advances to play at 1 PM Saturday, July 11 at SWHS and will face #10 seed York Suburban, who rained on the "Season of Dreams Parade" of #1 seed Spring Grove by knocking out "the Grove" by a score of 7-6.

South Western York Pounds Penn Manor
July 7, 2009  --   In a non-league playoff tune-up game, SW York beat the Penn Manor Comets by a score of 13 - 8. David Walker threw a strong 4-innings for SW York, limiting the Comets to 0 runs and 4 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 6.

At the plate, Evan Pickett carried the hot stick, as he stroked a double off the left field fence and then blasted his first home run, a 2-run shot in the 5th.

Up next for SW York is the York-Adams League Playoff Tournament. At stake is a birth to the Region IV Tournament in Fredericksburg in Lebanon County. SW York will play at 5:45 PM Friday, July 10 against the 7th seed, which will be determined by a play-in game on Thursday, July 9.

New Oxford Edges South Western York
July 6, 2009  --   SW York's Brian Bossom suffers a tough luck loss as New Oxford edged SW York 1 - 0 at New Oxford. Bossom tossed a gem ... allowing only two hits, No Walks and Six Srikeouts. New Oxford's only run came in the bottom of the 5th, when Bossom thew an inside pitch that just barely grazed the jersey New Oxford's #5 hitter. After recording the next two batters on a pop up and ground out, New Oxford's #8 hitter hit a 2-out double to center which allowed the games lone run to score.

More disappointing than the loss for SW York, was their inability to hit in the clutch. SW York had runners in scoring position in the 1st, 5th and 6th innings, yet could not manage to get that critical basehit to break open the game.

SW York will now head into the York-Adams Legion Tournamnet as the #2 seed, with a record of 15-2. They will play the #7 seed, determined based on the results of "play-in" games starting Thursday, July 9.

One final tune-up for SW York will be played on Tuesday July 7, as they host perenial Lancaster Co. power and the high school 2009 Lancaster-Lebanon League Champions, Penn Manor. Game time is at 6:00 at SWHS Field.

SW York 'WALKS' to Another Victory
July 2, 2009  --   The SW York baseball team rolled into Pleasureville and "WALKED" out a winner. By a score of 8-0, SW York improved its record to 15-1 and within (1) game of the York-Adams American Legion Regular Season Title.

Pitchers Kurt Seiders (5 innings), Eric Moul (1 inning) and Matt Hockenberry (1 inning) limited the hosts only 1 hit, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

On the contrary, Pleasureville pitchers walked 11 batters, hit 2 more and gave up 9 hits, which included a 2-RBI double by Colin Porter, a solo home run by Kurt Seiders and a 3 for 3 day by Matt Hockenberry.

SW York will travel to New Oxford Monday evening at 6 PM where a win will give them the Regular Season Championship and the #1 Seed for the York-Adams County Tournament.

Shiloh No Match For the Green Machine
June 29, 2009  --   In a come-from-behind win, South Western York defeated Shiloh by a score of 7 - 6, at SWHS Field. Kurt "King Kong" Seiders blasted another tape measure homer over the left-field fence to knot the score at 3-3. Later in the 4th inning, Cavan O'Reilly delivered a game tieing single, followed up by another 2-run blast by Colin Porter over the right-center fence to give SW York the lead for good.

Despite struggling in the first inning (3 runs on 4 hits), Brian Bossom was able to find his groove as he limited the Shiloh hitters to only 2 more hits over the next 5 innings before giving way to Matt Hockenberry in the 7th. Shiloh made a last ditch effort as they put up 2 runs in the 7th, but Hockenberry struck-out the final two batters to seal the SW York victory

South Western York travels next to Pleasureville seeking its 15th league win, 6 PM Thursday night, July 2.

South Western York Beats Shillington
June 27, 2009  --   In the nightcap of a day-night, home-away doubleheader, South Western York defeated Berks Co. foe Shillington, 8 - 1. The non-league win gives SW York a 15 - 4 overall record. Using a combination of pitchers (Walker, Kercher, Moul and Shannon), the Shillington bats were silenced for only 4 hits. Nick Wallin recorded 2 hits, while Colin Porter, Cavan O'Reilly and Chris Prestridge found themselves on base early and often each getting on base 3 times each via walk / HBP.

NEXT GAME: Shiloh at SWHS Field, 6 PM Monday, June 29.

Seiders Takes Command In Victory Over Littlestown
June 27, 2009  --   Kurt Seiders led the SW York "Green Machine" to a 3-0 victory over Littlestown on Saturday afternoon. Seiders threw a two-hit, complete game shutout and provided all the offense SW York needed, as he blasted the games first pitch over the left field fence. SW York played errorless defense to support the pitching and the bats have started to heat up again as they pounded the ball, eight of which for hits. SW York is now 13-1 (league) and is tied with Spring Grove atop of the league.

The next league game is against Shiloh at SWHS Field, 6 PM Monday, June 29.

South Western York Wins By Forfeit
June 26, 2009  --   Clad in their green jerseys and ready for action, South Western York found themselves taking batting practice rather than battling for another win when Northeastern was unable to field nine players Friday night. After waiting in vain until 6:15 for sufficient players to appear, Northeastern was forced to forfeit the game. SW York thus picked up their 12th win against only one loss.

SW York has little time off though as they face Littlestown in a league game at 1 PM Saturday afternoon, June 27 at SWHS Field, and a non-league game at Shillington, 7:00 Saturday night.

York Falls to South Western York, 7 - 1
June 24, 2009  --   SW York defeated York tonight at Small's Athletic Field in York City by a score of 7-1, but it could have been much worse as SW York stranded 13 runners on base. For the game, Ian Stambaugh paced the way with a pair of singles and stolen bases, while Nick Wallin and Dave Bankert each scored a pair of runs. With only 5 league games remaining before the league tournament (single elimination), SW York will look to bring their lumber on Friday against Northeastern who trails SW York by just 1 game in the loss column

NEXT: Northeastern at SW York, 6 PM Friday, June 26.

Bossom and Seiders Assure Return to Victory Road
June 22, 2009  --   Stung by an unlikely loss to previously winless Biglerville on Friday, South Western York reboarded the Victory Express with an 11-1 win over Dallastown Monday evening. Pitcher Brian Bossom was just the right man for the job with his businesslike mound demeanor producing a consistent and highly effective three-hit game. But for an errant pickoff throw which allowed Dallastown's lone run, Bossom would have tossed a shutout.

South Western York struggled to score runs for most of the game, but finally unleashed their offensive arsenal in the 5th and 6th innings. Dallastown fruitlessly exchanged pitchers while SW York produced timely hits, worked run scoring walks, and pressured Dallastown's defense into committing errors. It was all capped by Kurt Seiders' long double to deep left-centerfield in the 6th inning. Seiders' smash scored two to invoke the ten run rule and assure the team's return to Victory Road.

Next game: 6 PM Wednesday, June 24 against York at Small Field in York City.

Biglerville's Camara Stymies South Western York!!!
June 19, 2009 - The Biglerville right-hander, Adam Camara, pitched a gem and his team's defense shined even brighter to end SW York's chances of an undefeated regular season. SW York left 7 runners on base and squandered multiple opportunities to push runs across the board, thanks to Camara and his defense continually making plays to end SW York threats. None was bigger than in the top of the 7th. With the bases loaded and no outs, TJ Stevenson hit a "SCREAMER" back up the middle. Making a spectacular catch, relief pitcher Callahan snared the liner, then turned and doubled off the runner at 2nd base. Positioned to score two runners and take the lead, the games momentum thus turned and ended SW York's hopes for victory. SW York's David Walker pitched five solid inning, striking out 5. Brian Bossom pitched the 6th inning flawlessly.

SW York remains in first place in league standings at 9-1. SW York will look to rebound at 6 PM Monday, June 22 against Dallastown at SWHS Field.

South Western York Express Rolls Past Hanover
June 15, 2009  --   South Western York's offense picked up where it left off in Sunday's non-league win by trouncing Hanover 11-4 at Post 14's Diller Field. Like the strength that Samson of the Bible gained from his long locks, the compact and fleet afoot Ian Stambaugh may be packing a punch thanks to his flourishing "frohawk" haircut. Whatever the reason, Stambaugh set the offensive tone early by nearly slamming his first out-of-the-park homer when his long line drive dented the left-field wall. Stambaugh settled for a double but later stroked two more hits on the night. Stambaugh's three hits were part of a 17 hit SW York barrage, including five extra base hits.

Brian Bossom, a.k.a., "Boss", tamed Hanover's bats for five scoreless innings before giving up a two run homer in the 6th. In relief, Eric Moul retired Hanover in the 7th without allowing a run.

SW York remains in 1st place with a 9 - 0 league record. Next game: Littlestown at SWHS Field, 6 PM, Wednesday, June 17.

South Western York Overwhelms Stewartstown With 18 Run Inning
June 12, 2009  --   Southwestern York erupted with 18 runs in the top of the 5th inning to crush Stewartstown's hopes of a monumental upset on their home field. Leading only 3-0 and being out hit by a 5-4 margin heading into the 5th, SW York paraded a seemingly endless 22 batters to the plate, yielding 18 runs on 8 hits and 9 walks. Stewartstown utilized 5 different pitchers in the inning, but all had difficulty finding the strike zone -- when they did SW York bats pounded the ball. Nick Wallin on the day had 3 hits, including a 2-RBI double in the 5th. Chris Prestridge also roped a 2-RBI double in the big 5th inning. Kurt Seiders walloped another home run. Final score: 22-1. SW York utilized the "Pitch-by-Committee" approach, where Dave Walker, Eric Moul, Evan Pickett, as well as usual position players Pat Shannon and Colin Porter each threw (1) inning during the game. Stewartstown's lone run came in the 5th and was unearned.

SW York is now 8 - 0 (league) and 8 - 3 (overall) and has sole possession of first-place in the league standings.

Up next is a non-league contest against Franklin County powerhouse Chambersburg. 3 PM Sunday at SWHS Field!

Bermudian Springs Runs Dry Against The Green Machine
June 10, 2009  --   Adorned in their lucky green jerseys, Southwestern York took sole possession of first place by defeating previously undefeated Bermudian Springs, 5 - 0. SW York is now the only undefeated team in the York-Adams American Legion Baseball League.

Kurt Seiders twirled another sparkler allowing only three hits in his complete game shutout of Bermudian. Jack Kercher blasted a round-tripper and the SW York defense played errorless ball in the winning effort. (Apologies to Jack for initially misidentifying the home run hitter here.)

To Bermudian's credit, their infielders executed a rare triple play on a line out which allowed SW York runners to be doubled off second base and first base.

The game was called for darkness after six innings.

SW York takes a scenic tour of southeastern York County for its next game when the team travels to Stewartstown on Friday, June 12 for the 6 PM game.

South Western York "Steals" A Win Over Wrightsville for Another Road Victory
June 8, 2009  --   Southwestern York journeyed to East Prospect and defeated host Wrightsville 7-2. In a hot, muggy evening game, SW York bats managed only 6 hits, but manufactured 7 runs by using a few walks and 12 stolen bases. Leading the scampering around the basepaths was Ian Stambaugh, with 4 swiped bags. Brian Bossom and Matt Hockenberry continued to swing big sticks, each with a pair of hits and RBI's -- Bossom raked a triple and Hockenberry a double as the only two extra base hits in the game. On the mound, Hockenberry battled a tight strike zone but still allowed only 2 runs on 3 hits, while fanning 8. Kurt Seiders came in to close things out by throwing the final two innings, giving up no runs and 1 hit, while adding 3 more strikeouts to his line.

SW York clashes next with unbeaten Bermudian at South Western HS on Wednesday June 10 at 6:00.

Glen Rock Crumbles Under Southwestern York Attack
June 7, 2009  --   Southwestern York improved to 5-0 (league) on the season with an 8-0 win over Glen Rock. Brian "Boss Man" Bossom and Eric Moul combined on the shutout, with Bossom throwing 5-innings and allowing only 2-hits while Moul mopped up the final 2 frames, fanning 4. At the plate SW York started slow, but managed to score a run in each of the first two innings. However, the big blast came in the 4th, when SW York exploded for 4 runs, capped off by a monstrous 3-run JACK by Kurt Seiders. Seiders homer surprised some tennis players in the courts where it dropped well beyond left field. On the day, Seiders went 2-3, with 3 runs scored, a home run and double. Matt Hockenberry added three hits of his own, going 3-3 with a double and 2-RBI's. Bossom and Nick Wallin also chipped in a pair of hits in the SW York 10-hit offensive attack.

Through 5 games, SW York has outscored opponents 47-15 and will look to continue on the winning way as they travel to East Prospect to take on Wrightsville on Monday June 8 @6PM!

SW York Silences Red Lion Roar
June 3, 2009  --   In a 5 1/2 inning game called for darkness, Southwestern York remained unbeaten by knocking off previously unbeaten Red Lion by a score of 11-5. Despite falling behind 1-0 in the top of the 1st, SW York tied the game in the bottom of the 1st and never looked back, scoring runs in each of their 5 at-bats of the game ... 3 runs in the 2nd, 4 runs in the 3rd, 1 run in the 4th and 2 runs in the 5th. Kurt Seiders kept Red Lion's bats at bay during his 5 innings of work - recording 6 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk. Holding an 11-2 lead in the 6th, righty Dave Walker came in and worked off some rust with mop up duties as he continues to recover from his shoulder injury.

For SW York, the hit parade was early and often, led by Seiders going 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI's. Matt Hockenberry showed some warning track power as he doubled off the left center fence and picked up 2 RBI's. Catcher Ben Zimmerman scored 3 runs, while Brian Bossom and Cavan O'Reilly each added a pair of hits to their name!

Up next for SW York is Glen Rock on Sunday @ 5:00 in Glen Rock!!!

Hockenberry Outduels Suburban Ace Ruth
June 2, 2009  --   SW York hurler Matt Hockenberry fired a complete game as the SW York bats awoke just enough to edge visiting Suburban York. Cavan O'Reilly led the way with 2 hits and a pair of clutch RBI's (one in the 1st and another in the 5th). Suburban's Matt Ruth held the SW York bats in check for a good part of the game, but seemed to tire in the 5th, which is when a '3' spot of runs put SW on top for good. Hockenberry ran into a little trouble in the 7th, but got the final out on a ground out to 2nd base, stranding the tying run at 2nd base.

Southwestern Edged by Legendary Boyertown Bears
May 30, 2009 - The Boyertown Bears, the defending 2008 Pennsylvania American Legion State Champions, edged a victory over SW on May 30, 8 - 6. The game was played at legendary Bears Stadium in Boyertown, the site of numerous state and national regional championship tournaments.

SW hurler Kurt Seiders held the Bears hitless and scoreless for three innnings despite some SW defensive miscues. Seiders was calm and determined in the face of Bears' batters who were bigger and taller than most of his teammates. His consistent performance despite SW's defensive problems was impressive.

SW led 3 - 0 in the fourth when their promising young southpaw Eric Moul entered the game. Moul was followed by Jack Kercher and David Walker over the rest of the nine inning event. Unfortunately, timely Bears hitting and five official SW errors doomed SW's chances of upsetting the Bears.

SW whacked 10 solid hits off of Bears pitching, thus outhitting their opponents, but it wasn't enough to quell the damage of SW's defensive letdown. The Bears led 8 - 3 in the eighth inning when SW, refusing to surrender, scored three more times to rattle the Bears' nerves. David Walker the held the Bears from further scoring but SW couldn't plate anyone in the ninth despite having a couple baserunners.

Veteran Bossom Leads SW York to Victory
May 28, 2009 - Aided by an offense that produced a second consecutive game with a double digit scoring, Southwestern's only college player and team veteran, Brian Bossom, pitched a sparkler with clever combinations of fastballs and changeups. Matt Hockenberry closed out the victory on the mound. The diminutive but deceptively powerful Cavan O'Reilly, playing 3B, smashed an early home run to set the tone for a SW victory. The game was mostly played in steady rain and then called for darkness as SW was batting in the bottom of the 6th inning. Dover players, apparently exasperated by Southwestern's attack, were seen encouraging the umpire to call the game for darkness.
