St. Rose Wraps Up 2010 - 2011 Season
February 25, 2011
First and foremost I would like to salute our seniors Steve Frost and Jay Fittin. They finally got to enjoy a non-losing record for the first time in their four year Varsity careers. We wish you both nothing but the best in your futures and I'm glad to have been around you for the last 12 years or so. We look forward to hearing about your future endeavors and hope you both come back to visit on Friday nights.

Wow, it seems like yesterday was November 1st and we were having our initial team meeting. Coach Jamie and I  would like to let everyone know how proud we are of this seasons team. We gave ourselves a chance to accomplish all three of our team goals and even though we missed each one by a little, We feel that we accomplished a lot more in the grand scheme of things.

We made it to the Holiday Tournament Finals, we made the Shore Conference Tournament for the 1st time and we made it to the State Tournament for the 1st time as well... Pretty impressive, for a team that only had 14 players on the roster.

We got to enjoy watching Billy Regan and Christian Phipps both hit the 100 point plateau, Ray McGirr become the 1st goalie to have double digits wins in a season and more importantly a St. Rose Ice Hockey Team to not only hit double digit wins but finish a season with .500 record at 10-10-3.   There are many more firsts for the program as well and we can't wait to figure them all out for the program next year.....

Thanks for a great season men....Two hours removed and I already miss it....

Srimmages Completed...and now for the games!!!
November 30, 2010
After three good scrimmages we look ready for some live game action.

On Friday 11/26 we skated to a 3-3 tie with SJV. After skating to what seemed to be a 4-0 score we had a goal called off for a questionable high stick. With less than 2 minutes left in the 2nd we gave up 2 quick ones which gave them some life. With 5 minutes to go in the 3rd they tied at 3. That was the final but not before we killed the last 3 minutes down 1 & 2 men...Shots were 37-33 in SJV's favor.

On Sunday 11/28 we jumped the bus up the parkway to play an old foe in Governor Livingston, we played them the 1st two years we were a Varsity team. We lost the 1st one and tied the 2nd game. They held strong threw the 1st with some solid goaltending but the relentless pressure would finally give way and we went on a scoring streak in the 2nd that lasted thru the end of the game. The final was 13-3 With good scoring coming from both the offense and the defense. Shots were 54 - 15 for us.

Today, we wrapped up the pre-season facing 2010 State Champion Toms River South who has by far one of the most exciting players in the state. Jay Malone was the top ranked forward in the state last season and showed he will be there again. We played them well for the majority of the game with them leading 3-0 at  the intermission with Malone scoring 3 goals on the 3 shots. We scored 1st in the the 3rd and looked to make it a game before surrendering 3 unanswered goals for a 6-1 final. Malone ended the game with 4 goals on 4 shots. Shots were 27-19 TRS.
Schedule Updated
October 27, 2010
Our schedule has been updated, there are a couple of things to notice there. First, our Shore Conference Division has been changed to Shore D with the new divisions they created. You will see some new teams that we are required to play and some Shore C crossover games. Absent from the SC games is perennial rival Wall, they will be missed.
Secondly, you will notice our out of conference schedule has gotten much stronger as we will have 4 games and 1 scrimmage against private schools. We added our 1st Gordon Conference team Pope John to schedule as well as  top 15 Paul VI.

Saint Rose 'Frozen Roses' Ice Hockey Team History
October 27, 2010

Saint Rose High School is entering its 2nd year of varsity Ice Hockey competition and currently competes in the New Jersey Interscholastic Hockey League Southern Conference / Blue Division.  Head Coach Peter O'Neill brought a wealth of hockey knowledge to Saint Rose High School and with the support of Assistant Coaches Jamin Liguori, Jay Montiverti and the part-time support of Manasquan High School Ice Hockey alumni John Louffler, they have taught many kids the fundamentals of disciplined hockey.  The started as a club team in 2004, competing with many local club teams while building fundimental skills to a group of players that had previously competed as a inline hockey club with the Saint Rose High School.  The club team took its lumps this season going 0-1-8 while being outscored 57-12, but that doesn’t diminish the improvement of the team that had most of it’s roster playing its first season of competitive ice hockey.   The team started out with not a lot of hockey experience, with 13 of the 15 skaters played their first real hockey game in high school as a club team on Jan. 14th of 2004.  That being said, their skills progressed tremendously during the season, making great strides in their skating, stick handling, and passing abilities which are the three main skills involved in the sport.

In 2005 the school elected to transition the program to a varsity sport, joining many successful sports within the Athletic Department of Saint Rose High School.  The Athletic Director, Rick Stainton, along with the Saint Rose Administration thought it would be a good idea to make it a varsity sport as quick as possible given the strong base demonstrated by the team.  “The kids are very excited [about being a varsity sport] and so is the administration,” Stainton said. “This is definitely going to be an asset to our athletics programs.”

Coach O'Neill had about 11 of the 15 club participants returning along with the incoming freshman class to play varsity hockey in it's first season.  This provided a core group of talent but one with little experience against stronger teams throughout the division.  The team experienced many successes throughout the season, with many milestones achieved along the way to a 0-0-17 record for the 2005-2006 season that does not begin to tell the story.   The team was not expected to set the world on fire in its first season as a varsity program, but O’Neill remains optimistic about his team’s chances of being competitive.  "We played teams that were better than us and more talented than us, but my kids have a lot of heart and they leave it all out on the ice every game. They never stopped moving and they never gave up."

The 2006 - 2007 season will  have 8 returning players and several new incoming freshman that should allow the team to continue to progress in the Blue Division.  The team had 5 freshman sign up for hockey this season. Of those 5 players, there is a wide variety of talent and skill levels —from kids who have travel team experience to kids who are new to the sport.  "Yes, we are a new program, but I think we are going to come up with a couple surprises this year.”

Coaching Staff:
The St. Rose coaching staff, made up of O’Neill and assistants Monteverdi and Liguori, does not lack the experience or know-how to help jump-start the Roses varsity program.

Head Coach - Peter O'Neill
O’Neill has been coaching for about eight years. He is certified by USA Hockey in the advanced level — the fourth of five certification levels.  Coach O’Neill is the founding president of the Manasquan InLine Hockey League, a competitive inline program that he launched that includes all division levels as well as a clinic and challenger league.  He was responsible for overseeing the entire league operation which began with 32 players in 1997, the league’s first year, to over 175 players participants.   O’Neill also played hockey at Seton Hall Prep for three years before playing at Hawthorne College for one season.

Assistant Coach - Jamie Liguori
Asst. Coach Liguori has coaching experience from the John Warhol summer camps from 1979-1984 before becoming involved in the MIHL.  Liguori also played at William Paterson College from 1980-84 and was invited to try out for the 1984 US Olympic team. He was invited to the 1984 Olympic team tryouts and he made it to the last cut.  Liguori has been playing the sport since he was 5 years old.

Welcome to our 3rd season of ice hockey at Saint Rose High School!!
We look forward to another season of exciting ice hockey.  The team experienced many successes throughout the season, with many milestones achieved along the way.  A challenging 0-0-17 record for the 2005-2006 season does not begin to tell the story of the 'Frozen Roses' many successes.

Coach O'Neill remains optimistic, noting that we are a new program, but I think we are going to come up with a couple surprises this year.   Please come out and support this newest member of the Saint Rose High School sports family!!!

Our 2006-2007 Season Fundraising Goals
This season, as we launch into another varsity year of competition, we are once again asked to support the school with the excessive costs associated with this expensive sport.  As you might imagine, ice hockey is an expensive sport and the costs associated with the program include: ice rink rental (for games and practices), referee fees, and equipment costs. Most of the players provide their own equipment to reduce the school costs as much as possible and each parent/player has also agreed to pay a $600.00 stipend ($700.00 for those that did not participate in the pre-season captain's practice sessions) to help offset the cost of this new varsity program.  We also hope to gain more support from our Athletic Committee in the years to come, and this year the committee has offered a $100.00 stipend for each player.

This year we have set a fundraising goal of $22,000.  We would ask that you consider becoming a sponsor of our club:  All contributions made to our program are tax deductible (tax ID#22-3320474).  The Sponsor Tiers are as follows:

- Platinum Sponsor                       $1,000 or more
- Gold Sponsor                             $500 - $999
- Silver Sponsor                           $250 - $499
- Bronze Sponsor                          $150 - $249

Each Sponsor will be listed on our team’s website, While Platinum and Gold Sponsors will have individual banners on the website with links to their website!  Additionally, all sponsors will have their names listed on the school website and in a letter of gratitude written to the Coast Star Newspaper.  Please make checks payable to Saint Rose High School (note: ‘Ice Hockey Program’ in the memo section of the check) and forward the same to Rick Stainton – Athletic Director c/o Saint Rose High School, 607 7th Avenue, Belmar, NJ  07719.

Micallef - McNally named to All-Division Team
While Eric and Shawn are both leaders for our team, their hard work and efforts where noticed by all of the Southern Blue Divisions coaches, so much that they were both voted on to the Southern Blue All- Division Teams.

For Eric, this was his second time being honored on the All-Division team. Last year he made Second Team and this year he made the First Team. Eric Finishes his career with 1,534 save becoming the all-time leader for the Shore Conference and second all-time in the state.

Shawn was honored for his hard work by being voted to the Second Team. Mac finishes his career with the Roses scoring both game winning goals in our teams 2 victories this season and is the All-time Leader in Goals and Assists for our team.

McDermotts scoring records under attack...
December 19, 2009
As Ryan continues to rehab his scoring records are under assault from both Phipps and Regan.

Billy became the all time leader in goals scored when he netted his 40th goal in the Southern Regional game on Wednesday and is only 6 points away from McDermott's all-time points leader title which stands at 64.

Meanwhile his 25 career assists which makes him the all time leader is skating on thin ice as Christian is sittin with 24 career assists.

Lets hope he can get back sooner rather than later so he can at least mount a counter attack and defend his titles....

Eric Micallef Reaches 1,000 Save Milestone!!!
Eric Micallef reached the 1,000 save milestone during the December 29th game against Red Bank Regional, a goal that was reached in 2 short years at SRHS.  The milestone was marked by a stop in play early in the 3rd period as he was awarded a plaque commemorating the occasion by Head Coach O'Neill along with a quick photo session.  Our congratulations to Eric for all of his hard work and giving his all to keep the team in each and every game!
