My son only likes to go to the practices...is that OK?
Absolutely. We have many kids, particularly the younger or newer wrestlers, who are not comfortable competing. If that's the case, and they enjoy the practices...then let them just practice and they can compete when they are ready.

RECOMMENDED and REQUIRED GEAR
PRACTICE ATTIRE. Suitable athletic attire is required for all practices and scrimmages. The best attire for practices or scrimmages is a t-shirt, shorts and wrestling shoes (some wrestlers may opt to wear wrestling singlets at scrimmages). Support jocks and/or spandex shorts (underneath gym shorts) are strongly recommended. No jewelry or clothing with zippers, rivets or similar potentially injury causing materials will be allowed.
HEADGEAR. Wrestling headgear is optional, but is recommended, particularly for those who regularly participate in tournament wrestling. Please be aware that a headgear is required for all dual meets and most tournaments.
WRESTLING SHOES. Wrestling shoes will be required for all wrestlers after the first two weeks.
BUYING WRESTLING SHOES AND ACCESSORIES: Wrestling shoes are available at many sporting goods stores. It is advised to call first as not all stores carry them. Also, given that the shoes will not likely fit for more than one season, there is little need to buy expensive wrestling shoes. Please do not hesitate to consult with one of the coaches with any questions or advice with regard to purchasing wrestling shoes or any other accessories.

UNIFORM AND SINGLET POLICY
The official uniforms will be team shirts and shorts that are included with the registration fee. Uniforms are required for scrimmages, tournaments and dual meets.
Singlets will be offered for sale at cost. Used singlets will be sold at a discount. We have ordered singlets that should arrive shortly after the season begins.
***NON-TYNGSBOROUGH SINGLET POLICY*** At dual meets and tournaments, only Tyngsborough singlets may be worn. The only exception to this rule is if Tyngsborough singlet in the wrestlers size was not available, in which case, such wrestlers may wear non-team singlets, however, with regard to tournaments and dual meets in particular, should still wear their team shirts and shorts as their warm-ups. Any singlet may be worn at a scrimmage.
|
Just about every Sunday (and sometimes Saturday) throughout the year, there will be tournaments held for any wrestlers that wish to attend. Except for certain tournaments (Chelmsford and the Big East Tournaments), most tournaments are geared for more experienced wrestlers. Be forewarned, a tournament can be a long day in a gym. We do not recommend that any of our wrestlers attend every tournament. We'd prefer to see our wrestlers have some weekends where they attend only a scrimmage or dual meet to avoid burnout.
|
A dual meet is the equivalent to a "game" in football or baseball. The dual meet is a team match against another team. There are set weight classes and only one wrestler competes at each weight class. As of 2008-2009, Tyngsborough has joined the newly formed eight team Merrimack Valley Youth Wrestling League competing against Chelmsford, Dracut, North Andover, Westford, Nashua, Tewksbury and Acton/Boxborough. There is no other event like a dual meet that brings out the team aspect of wrestling. We hope to have some good crowds at our dual meets this year. It should be fun.

SCRIMMAGES
Scrimmages are held throughout the season, usually early on Saturday mornings. Scrimmages are recommended for all ages and all ability levels. Scrimmages involve pairings of matches whereby coaches attempt to match kids of similar age, weight and experience for informal matches. No scores are kept and there is no winner. Scrimmages are highly recommended for all wrestlers.

SHOE SWAP
Any wrestlers who have outgrown their wrestling shoes from last year may turn their old shoes into the Shoe Swap. We will begin collecting shoes at the first round of sign-ups in October. Wrestlers who turn in shoes will be given first priority on receiving shoes from the Swap. By turning in a pair of shoes and providing the wrestler's current shoe size, the wrestler is given the first choice on the next pair of shoes turned into the Swap that match the size (or range) provided. The wrestler will have the option to accept the pair or pass without losing his priority position. Priority will be determined on a first come first serve basis.
