Letter from WB Pop Warner President Mike Antonellis about Safety
Safety is one of our key themes and priorities for the 2009 Pop Warner season.  Much has been written lately about safety in youth sports and cheering.  We occasionally hear about injuries, or even deaths, resulting from tragedies in kid's sports.  We've also seen recent news about cheerleaders falling during stunts and competitions.  As you know, unfortunately, injuries are a part of athletics, and no sports program can completely eliminate the risk of injury.

Yet, football and cheering is no more dangerous than any other sport offered in Watertown or Belmont.  And, more often than not, kids in other sports who use less equipment then football players, are more prone to injury.  But, more important, Pop Warner takes the following very critical steps to try, as much as possible, to ensure kids are always safe, and to minimize serious injuries:
  • We assign EMTs to every football practice and game, at every field, in case injuries occur.
  • We also take steps to ensure cheerleaders have safety mats and EMTs assigned when doing stunts and flying during routines.
  •  All our head coaches, and many of our assistant coaches are certified by Pop Warner, and are required to teach league-approved techniques to avoid injuries.
  • The league divides kids by age, and BY WEIGHT, to ensure children of comparable weight and size are playing against each other.
  • Many of our coaches and parents are CPR-certified as well, to help EMTs as necessary.
  • Our equipment is safety-tested and league-approved every two years to ensure helmets, pads, and other safety equipment does not fail in protecting our kids.
  • Finally, the league requires that every child obtain a physical, and required paperwork from a doctor, before the season starts, to ensure kids are in physical shape to play or cheer.
We on the Board of Directors for WB Pop Warner have kids in the program, so safety is extremely important for us and our children.  We invite you to find out more by contacting us, and you can rest assured that we will always put your child's safety first.

Mike Antonellis

The 2009 WBPW Season is upon us...The start of another WB Pop Warner season is Monday August 3rd and is right around the corner! We are looking forward to seeing you there!
For the 2009, the Pop Warner football regular season runs from Monday August 3th to November 1. Games are played on Sundays, September 13th through October. Starting on Monday August 3rd and through the month of August, practices begin at the Moxley Field at Watertown Middle School and coaches and players/cheerleaders work on conditioning, learning plays and routines, and preparing. This is an important time in the season and can determine whether teams are successful during the season. Cheerleaders may also be asked to attend separate cheering times or indoor facilities.

In August, practices run Monday - Thursday, from (talk to your head coach for exact times) 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.. Coaches do understand that families have vacations and commitments planned in August, and will demonstrate a lot of flexibility in accomodating these plans, but parents should understand that the more time a child puts in to practice, the better off fundamentally and athletically they are. Team and squad success often reflects time put in and preparedness in August.

The season officially starts after Labor Day. Once school begins, we limit practice time to 3 nights a week - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.. This runs from September - October. Practice locations to be announced.

Games are played on Sundays and have fixed times once the league establishes game times. There are 4 home games (played at Watertown's Victory Field) and 4 away games. If teams make playoffs, these games begin in November. Generally, the E team (younger and lighter kids) play at 8:00 a.m. with coaches having kids show up by 7:00 a.m. for warmups. Games take about  1 1/2 hours each and teams play in order, from E team up through A team, with coaches asking players to arrive an hour before gametime. Separate cheering competitions in October and November will be announced during the season.

Join the WB Pop Warner family!  Last season, our program experienced unprecedented success by fielding two Eastern Massachusetts Champions in both cheering and football.  Our program is growing quickly, and we need your child's help to make it to the playoffs again and again.  Register right away!!
