Unlike most other clubs we welcome you to enjoy the experience with your wrestler.  In order to coach or even be in the practice room, you will need to have a USA coach’s card. This card is needed for insurance reasons and helps to protect the club, the wrestler, and coach from any incidents. If you are interested in becoming a coach, please contact our coach coordinator Henry Goetz at vicepresident@crystallakewizards.com, and he can add you to the coaches email list and get you the information you need to become a coach.

Please keep in mind; all coaches are encouraged to frequently help out at practice.  You do not have to be asked to participate.  The more help, the better.  It helps you learn what is being taught and to become familiar with the kids and their style.  We expect that you will not only coach your kid, but others as needed at tournaments and practice.  We do not like to see coaches sitting around at practices, when they can be participating.

Coaches, listed below is the information on how to obtain a coaches card with the IKWF.

You will need this card prior to attending any practices.

Steps & Guidlines

  1. Go online and apply for your USA coaches membership card
  2. Once you obtain your card please email a copy of the card/card number to Hank Goetz - henrygoetz@comcast.net
  3. NEW - This year we will be setting up a coaches code of conduct form online for ALL of our coaches to fill out. You will not be able to coach in the room or sign up for any tournaments until this form is filled out.
  4. Because of the size of our club and our reputation, we will not allow any misconduct from our coaches so this Code of Conduct form will serve as your warning. If an incident occurs, at practice, on the mat, in the stands or at any wrestling related event the coach or coaches will be suspended until the matter is reviewed by our board and a decision is made.
  5. Hank will be drafting an email on what we expect out of coaches in practice and at tournaments so there is no confusion on what is expected of us as coaches.
  6. We also ask for your help on keeping the facility clean, Art will be putting up a master schedule and everyone will be asked to pitch in and help clean during the year.
  7. There will be limited parents in the room this year, if a coach isn't coaching, leaning on the wall, or sitting in the chairs they will be asked to leave the room.

20 Mindset Tips to tell your Wrestlers

1. Constantly look to score. Focus on putting points on the board, not winning the match

2. Score the next point. Each moment of wrestling.

3.  Win the battle off the whistle. (top and bottom)

4. Look to turn and pin (don’t just ride).

5. Your tie or no tie. Never hang-out in his tie-up. Don’t “hang-out” in your tie-up either.  Move him and score.

6. Take the most risks and score the most points. Don’t “feel him” out.

7. Be the last one wrestling (at end of periods and by the out of bounds).

8. Be the most intense person on the mat.

9. Feel good out there. Keep that good feeling the whole match no matter what.

10. Have fun. It’s just a game out there. Don’t blow it out of proportion.

11. Win the match 2 or 3 times. Don’t get frustrated/mad/hang head after a bad call, mistake, opponent comes back, etc. Beat him again.

12. Be quick but don’t hurry.

13. Control the pace/tempo. Don’t “wait and see.”

14. Finish the period on top.

15. Blow him away! It doesn’t have to be close. Step on their throat and make them remember you.

16. JUST..WRESTLE..Don’t overthink/overanalyze.

17. Score last! Don't sit on leads. Put the match away.

18. Pull the trigger. Be the one to go. Err on the side of gutsy.

19. Win all overtimes. Dig down deep and let your heart show during the match.

20. Wrestle in the moment. Refocus immediately after mistakes/bad calls.
The Wrestling Coach

There's someone who gives you respect, he faces the challenge without any regret.
When riding the crest fans praise and cheer, but if the team loses, cruel taunts he will hear.

Countless hours he devotes in preparing to win, while his family is home all waiting for him.
In victory crowds beg for a shake of his hand, in defeat however, alone he must stand.

His wrestlers revere him he knows what is best, they render their utmost when put to the test.
No matter the outcome he sits by their side, filling each youthful heart with courage and pride.

He tutors his mat men to fight till the end, yes this is their coach, a builder of men.
