Frequently Asked Questions
WHEN CAN MY CHILD TRY OUT FOR A TEAM ?
There are no try outs for Pop Warner Football. This is a first come first served basis. All teams will be capped at 30 players until August 1, then we will pull from a waiting list to maximum of 35 players per team
CAN I SELECT WHICH TEAM MY CHILD WILL BE ON, SO HE CAN PLAY WITH HIS/HER FRIENDS?
No, team selection is made by the Football Commissioner or Cheer Coordinator, and will be based on age and weight for football players as of July 31st or the age only for cheerleaders. Generally, unless extenuating circumstances arise, your child will be placed on the lowest age team he or she qualifies for. This will help all participants progress at a healthy, well rounded rate until he or she is ready for Jr. High or High School competition.
IF MY CHILD DECIDES THAT HE/SHE DOES NOT LIKE THE PROGRAM CAN I GET A REFUND?
All request for refunds must be made in writing and must be submitted by the first day of practice after Jamboree. At that time refunds will be processed and mailed by Sept. 15th if all the football gear has been returned to the league and accounted for. The total amount for the refund will be minus the $100.00 non-refundable registration fee. After Jamboree there will be no refunds.
WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE PRACTICES?
Practice starts August 1st at Deland Middle School. Practices will continue Monday through Friday for the first 4 weeks from 6:00 to 8:00pm. After that each individual coach will set his practice schedule for the rest of the season three nights a week.
WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE GAMES?
All home games are played at Spec Martin in Deland. Away games are played though out Central Florida usually within a 40 minute drive. Depending on the team your child plays or cheers for will determine the time of your game. Mitey Mites usually start at 9:00AM with the Midgets usually starting at 4:00PM. Gameday is Saturday. Find the directions to each game here
WILL TRANSPORTATION BE PROVIDED FOR AWAY GAMES?
No, it is the responsibility of each parent to get their child to the games on time. For away games we will usually meet at Deland Middle School or the Park and Ride on Saxon and car pool to the games.
WHAT IS PHYSICAL DAY?
Physical day is when the league holds a "Sports" physical for our teams. The cost of the physicals are $15.00 for each examination and the money is donated by a local Doctor back to the league for the young athletes. We will hold Physical day on a Saturday before Aug.1st,of each year.
WHAT IS "ZERO WEIGHT DAY"?
Please review the age/weight grid on the About DBYFC page for each team. All football players are sorted by this grid and placed on the corresponding teams. In order to play you must make the Minimum or not exceed the Maximum weight for the team your child is placed on by Jamboree game. ( Zero Weight Day.) If the weight is not achieved your child is dropped from the team and a refund minus the $25.00 registration fee will be forwarded. This is a National Pop Warner rule, not a Deland Bulldog rule. This rule is in place for the safety of the kids, and is NOT flexible.
HOW CAN I INSURE THAT MY CHILD GETS THE MOST OUT OF HIS TIME WITH THE DELAND BULLDOGS?
Get involved! The kids that do the best and achieve the highest goals are those that have the strongest parent participation. Attend and positively encourage the players and the team at all practices and games. Become involved as a volunteer in all aspects of the program. Encourage and reinforce what your child is learning on the practice field. You will find that Pop Warner Football and Cheer will be a rewarding experience for both you and your son or daughter.
MY SON IS AN OUTSTANDING ATHLETE, WILL HE BE A STARTER FOR HIS TEAM?
This question is for the Head Coach of each team. They determine the starting order and position of each player based on skill level. Coaches are required to play every player a minimum of 6 to 10 plays per game. How much playing time they see beyond that, again depends on skill level, attitude, practice attendance, academics, and performance.
IF I FEEL THAT THE COACH IS INCOMPETENT. HOW DO I VOICE MY OPINION?
If you have a issue with any coach approach him/her discreetly and away from the children and other parents. Make your point and be sure to listen to their response. If you are still not satisfied then you can talk to the Football or Cheer Commissioner, they may bring the concern to our President if needed and finally to the Board of Directors. The first question anyone will ask you is "Have you talked this over with the coach?" If not they will direct you back to them, as a first line of communication.
HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO THE DELAND BULLDOGS HAVE?
NONE!! We are strictly a volunteer run program. The entire Board of Directors as well as the coaches and assistants are parent volunteers. Rest asurred however that all volunteers are in it for one thing and one thing only. The focus of our DeLand Bulldogs Organization, as well as our East Coast Conference and National Pop Warner, is the KIDS.
Let's have a safe and rewarding season.
