SAUKVILLE - Powered by a three-run first inning and timely pitching, the Eastern Division all-stars shut out the Northern Division all-stars 4-0 on Sunday July 8 at Dickmann Field in Grady Park.

The East touched the North starting pitcher Joe Daniels (Cedarburg) for three runs in the first inning. John Stetzenback (West Allis) led off the game with a single and scored on Derek D’Amico’s (Waukesha) double. D’Amico scored ahead of Brian Stoesklien’s (West Allis) home run.

Winning pitcher Steve Kargus (Butler) threw three perfect innings, thanks in part to Andy Schwall’s (West Allis) catch that denied the North’s Ross Zahour (Cedarburg) a home run in the first inning.

Grafton’s Joe Riebe broke up the East perfect game with a bunt single with one out in the fourth inning. Riebe’s single was the lone North hit until the sixth when Saukville’s Joel Zalewski lined a pitch into center field for a hit. He added another single in the eighth inning. The North’s other hit belong to Port Washington’s Brad Kitt.

In the seventh inning, the East scored their final run. After leadoff hitter Mike Gappa (New Berlin) was hit by a pitch, Nick Blanchet (Muskego) beat out an infield single. Gappa scored on Kargus’ single.

Stetzenback and Stoesklien each had two hits for the East. Other East players collecting a hit were Eric Dunn (Butler) and Randy Sobczyk (Butler).

Zalewski was selected as the North's most-valuable player by a vote of division managers present at the game.

CEDARBURG - Hammering out 19 hits, the Southwestern Division all-stars defeated their Northern Division counterparts 15-6 on Sunday at Cedarburg’s Behling Field.

After five innings, the Southwest was clinging to a 4-3 lead. They broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring 11 times.

In the Southwest first inning, Waterford’s Jason Morgan led off with a double. His teammate, Chris Harmeling, followed with a single. Marcellus Dawson of Rome reached on a fielders choice to score Morgan. After Bart Nowicki (Waterford) reached on an error, Dan Stefanski (North Prairie) singled to score Dawson. Delavan’s Aaron Adsit singled to score Nowicki.

The North answered in their half of the first on a solo home run by Thiensville-Mequon’s Ken Poniewaz. Morgan started another Southwest rally in the second with a triple, scoring on Harmeling’s sacrifice fly.

In the North fourth, the hosts scored twice to close within 4-3, loading the bases on walks to Derek Kozlowski (Port Washington) and Scott Sievert (West Bend Spirits). Sandwiched in between was Poniewaz being hit by a pitch. Another walk to Adam Rohlinger (Spirits) forced home Kozlowski. Howards Grove’s P.J. Weber grounded into a fielders choice that scored Poniewaz.

Any hopes the North had of a comback were crushed in the Southwest sixth. In that inning, the visitors sent 16 batters to the plate in scoring 11 times. Waterford’s Brad Nowicki walked to lead of the inning. Teammate Adam Brechtl singled. East Troy’s Dustin Keegan doubled home Nowicki. North Prairie’s Jon Stillman and Genessee’s Dusty Schmidt added run-scoring singles.

After Jeff Silbernagel (East Troy) reached on an error, Katte singled in a run. Damon Schmidt (Waterford) followed with another single. Consecutive walks to Brad Nowicki and Brechtl each scored runs to make the score 12-3. Stillman added another run-scoring single. Dusty Schmidt’s two-run single and Ryan Toshum (Mukwonago)’s single concluded the scoring.

In the bottom of the sixth, the North scored three runs. After Paul Gloede (Plymouth) led off with a walk, the next two batters were retired. Ryan Finnerty (Thiensville-Mequon) drove in Gloede with a single, the first hit for the North since Poniewaz’s home run in the first. Finnerty’s teammate, Andy Moroder, followed with a double. Port Washington’s Nick Heiting hit a single that scored both Finnerty and Moroder. A single by Chris Bennin (Plymouth) and walk to Nick Chesak (Spirits) loaded the bases, but no further damage was done.

Dan Stefanskihad three hits for the Southwestern Division. Morgan, Harmeling, Katte, Stillman, Dusty Schmidt and Damon Schmidt had two hits each. Collecting one hit were Adsit, Brechtl, Keegan and Toshum.

Besides the Poniewaz home run, the only other Northern hits were singles by Finnerty, Heiting, Bennin and Cedarburg’s Ross Zahour, and a double by Andy Moroder. -30-
