Where does the fee money go?
As we all know, it isn't cheap to sign our boys & girls up for ice hockey. The majority of your participation cost goes to paying for ice time. These rates are set by the Iceplex and are very competitive, not only for Florida, but nationwide. You all know how expensive it can be to keep our home at a cool 78 during the summer. Now imagine keeping a sheet of ice frozen year-round! A relatively small portion ($35) goes to BAIHA's general fund which helps us pay for referees, scoresheets, and miscellaneous items like pucks.

Note that our Travel Teams each manage their own budgets. While most keep their funds deposited in BAIHA's account, the officers of BAIHA have little control over how funds are raised and spent. For questions on how your travel team funds are utilized, inquire with your Team Manager.

Are BAIHA board members and coaches paid?
By and large, no. Occasionally arrangements are made for professional instructors to come in and assist with practices and they may be paid. But the Board members, travel coaches, and house coaches volunteer their time to provide a quality organization.

Why doesn't the Iceplex do more for BAIHA?
The Iceplex does plenty for BAIHA! They provide us office space for our Board, a computer with internet access, registration management, very reasonable ice rates, good ice times, and on and on. As the parents of travel team players know, the Iceplex is one of the better ice rinks in the state. You must understand that the rink is a business that needs to make a profit in order to exist. Keep this in mind...the rink can exist without BAIHA, but BAIHA cannot exist without the rink.

What requirements do coaches need to meet?
It is BAIHA's desire to have all coaches certified to the appropriate level by USA Hockey. It is a requirement for coaching travel teams. Certification is accomplished by attending coaching registration clinics held several times per year in various locations. Levels 1 and 2 require a full day each of classroom instruction and often some on-ice instruction. Level 3 requires a weekend of classroom and on-ice instruction. Levels 1 thru 3 require re-certification every three years.

While certification of all coaches is the desire, it is not always possible to get a coach certified prior to our need due to the clinic schedule. However, all coaching is supervised by the Director of Hockey, Peter Nyman.

What do jerseys cost and where do I purchase them?
Excel Spreadsheet to Select Jersey Number
Jerseys can be purchased at the pro shop in the Iceplex (Play Moore Sports). BAIHA President Gary O'Neil maintains the master list of jersey numbers and will advise you on the availability of a certain jersey number. You may also open the linked spreadsheet to see for yourself what is available. In the spreadsheet, enter the desired number above your player's birthyear and it will say "Avail" or "Not Avail" regarding availability. In general, a number is not available if it has already been chosen by a player that could potentially be in the same age division. So once a number is selected by a player, it is unavailable to kids of the same age, one year younger, or one year older.

Note that starting with the Fall 2008 session, the purchase of Hurricane jerseys is optional for House players. Jerseys can be borrowed for House games in lieu of purchasing jerseys. Travel team players are still required to have team jerseys.

Where do our players come from?
Here is a snapshot of our youth hockey players registered with USA Hockey as of June 2006. Interesting that Rockledge, where the Iceplex is located, ranks only third behind Melbourne and Merritt Island.
