20 Questions with Mark Cairns
This week we continue our series of Q & A with the players from the Brooklin Dodgers.
1. What was the first sport that you played? Baseball
2. At what age did you start playing baseball and at what level? House league in Little Britain, I was 7
3. What number do you wear and is there any significance to it? 27, started out as a hockey number because of Ron Hextall, the greatest goalie ever! Now it is just my favourite number
4. What is your favourite meal to prepare? Anything on the BBQ
5. What is your favourite restaurant to eat at? Usually a Submarine sandwich joint
6. How was it you became a member of the Brooklin Dodgers (Whitby Chiefs)? Steve Smith was helping coach and I have known him since I moved to Little Britain, so he got me interested
7. If you could have dinner with three people, living or deceased, who would they be? My mom, Babe Ruth, and Lee Harvey Oswald (was he really the lone gunmen?)
8. Do you have any phobias? Not until my helmet comes off on the ice
9. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you have with you? A water purifying machine, matches, 3 ply toilet paper
10. If you could trade places with one person, who would it be and why? Any member of a rock band like Metallica, Godsmack, Audioslave etc.
11. If you could face any player in baseball history, who would it be and why? Barry Bonds, everyone else is walking him, I bet I could too!
12. Who was your role model/mentor growing up? My parents
13. What are your baseball goals? To have as much fun as possible while being competitive
14. Detail three Career Highlights:
1 - Playing exhibition games at Shea Stadium in New York (the infield was like a putting green, and the boxes were flat and firm!)
2 - Watching Jarvie's homer at the Roger's Centre from the bullpen (I got to play too, and my brother in law and nephew were a part of the game also),
3 - Winning Ontario Eliminations with Oshawa, and playing in Nationals in 1999
15. How do you spend your time when you are not working or playing baseball? Have been playing and/or training for hockey, sometimes golfing
16. How does the Ontario Senior Select Baseball Association compare with other leagues you have played in? Many players in this league could play more competitive ball, but the time constraints, so it is comparable skill-wise, better in terms of pure enjoyment
17. Do you have any bad habits? Swinging at the first pitch and sliders down and away
18. What is the best present you have ever received? Goalie mask for my gold chain (charm)
19. What is your most memorable moment as an Brooklin Dodger (Whitby Chief) to date? Having as much fun as possible (regardless of results) while being competitive, and saving a man's life in Wasaga Beach in 2005
20. What are your pet peeves? Lippy players who have no right to be, or no reason to be!

1. What was the first sport that you played? Soccer....some kind of toddler league when I was four.
2. At what age did you start playing baseball and at what level? House league when I was 10
3. What number do you wear and is there any significance to it? When you're born on a leap year, 29 is always near and dear......
4. Day games or Night games and why? Night Games...nothing like playing under the lights
5. What is your favourite restaurant to eat at? At this point in time I am enjoying Korean BBQ
6. How was it you became a member of the Brooklin Dodgers (Whitby Chiefs)? Can you think of a better place when the Durham Chiefs let you go.....just call me Johnny Damon
7. If you could have dinner with three people, living or deceased, who would they be? Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, Denzel Washington.......I would say Beyonce, Gabrielle Union, and Jessica Alba, but it's hard to eat when you're sitting there with your mouth open
8. What is your current job when not playing baseball? Got 2. Sports Editor at The Score, and Customer Service at MoneyMart
9. What are on the walls of your room? Movie posters from my days at Blockbuster, painting of Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X, couple pictures of good times, and a few awards
10. Do you have any phobias? Strangers always think I'm someone's brother or something........mistaken identity shooting just waiting to happen
11. What is your favourite television show? Right now it's Lost, 24, and The OC
12. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you have with you? Satilite phone, GPS locator, and if all else fails The Bat Signal.........why stay lost?
13. If you could trade places with one person, who would it be and why? Dwyane Wade. NBA Star, your teammate is Shaq, on People's 50 Most Beautiful, and you hang out in Miami for half the year (have you seen the women in Miami)
14. If you could face any player in baseball history, who would it be and why? Ken Griffey Jr. The Kid is still my all time favorite player.......damn injuries
15. Who was your role model/mentor growing up? My parents taught me everything I needed to know
16. What are your baseball goals? Keep playing, Keep getting better, win a league championship
17. Detail three Career Highlights: A bases loaded pitch-hit rbi single in a rep championship game. Back to back game winning hits, who that's against isn't really important is it?.....working on the third
18. What is the best present you have ever received? Well the girlfriend did get me the new IPod video for christmas, so that leads at the moment
19. What is your most memorable moment as an Brooklin Dodger (Whitby Chief) to date? That 2 out 2 rbi single against Durham in the Walker Championship last year was pimp.
20. What are your pet peeves? Teens whose parents have clearly taught them nothing, or are too dumb/cool to bloody learn

18 questions with Jay Jarvie

In a new feature that will be run every few days, with thanks to the Oshawa Dodgers of the Intercounty Baseball League who first came up with the idea, the Dodgers will ask each player 20 questions, so that you the fans can better get to know each Brooklin Dodger.
Our first player up to the plate to answer questions is enterfielder Jay Jarvie.
1. What was the first sport that you played? Ice Hockey
2. At what age did you start playing baseball and at what level? 12 years old
3. What number do you wear and is there any significance to it? 11, the coolest kids always got the double digits growing up...and I've stuck with it ever since; although I'm still pretty cool
4. Day games or Night games and why? Night games...no doubt, Gotta love playing under the lights, and usually the hangover has passed by that time
5. What is your favourite meal to prepare? Anything pasta
6. What is your favourite restaurant to eat at? Boston Pizza
7. How was it you became a member of the Brooklin Dodgers (Whitby
Chiefs)? I've been a member since I was 17, after myself and Mitch Dunn, talked so much smack at one another we needed to play on the same team to see what was up...and the rest is history

who would they be? Jim Carrey, Angelina Jolie, Vida Guerrera--that way Jim could make them laugh and I could watch their boobies bounce

14. If you could face any player in baseball history, who would it be and why? Roger Clemens so he could pitch a perfect game against me, with no fielders

1. Homerun in the all-star game at the Rogers Center
2. Winning the 16 team Burlington tournament as a junior--although I've since lost the ring
3. Winning the silver medal in the Nationals with the University of Guelph Gryphons

Chief) to date? too many to put down, but beating Durham in the playoffs 2 of 3 years sure was fun
