What is Coaching Edinburgh?
Coaching Edinburgh is a service run by the Edinburgh Leisure Coaching Development Officer. Its main aims are to help current and potential coaches to develop their coaching skills and to increase the quantity and quality of coaches within Edinburgh.
How does Coaching Edinburgh help coaches to develop?
There are three main ways Coaching Edinburgh can help:
a) Coaching Edinburgh has a 3 tiered Coach Scholarship Programme - this aims to help coaches with the cost of their coach education.
b) Coaching Edinburgh runs and subsidises a number of generic coach education courses, including:
- Safeguarding and Protecting Children
- First Aid for Sports Coaches
- How to coach disabled people in sport
- In Safe Hands
- Sports Psychology workshop
- Sports Nutrition workshop
- An Introduction to Strength and Conditioning
- Injury Prevention and Core stability workshop
c) The coaching Edinburgh website provides a calendar, under ‘Coaching Events’ (see link above) which gives details of up coming NGB courses and coaching conferences across Scotland.
What are the 3 Coach Scholarships Levels?
Level 1: Creating Coaches: Creating players (get qualified and get started) – This provides part funding for a National sports or outdoor education Governing Body qualification.
Level 2: Continuing Coach Development (developing the current coach) – Funding for an annual plan of development opportunities designed in conjunction with a Governing body representative.
Level 3: High Performance Scholarship (Coach to Win – coaches work with ESIS athletes) – Funding for an annual plan of development opportunities designed in conjunction with the East of Scotland Institute of Sport.
I’ve never coached before am I eligible for the Level 1 scholarship?
a) Do you have knowledge and experience of sport or outdoor activity?
b) Are you good at motivating and encouraging others?
c) Are you attached to a club or school, or do you have opportunities to coach young people?
d) Are you keen to develop your skills and coaching knowledge?
e) Do you coach in Edinburgh or do you plan to coach in Edinburgh?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then you are eligible for Level 1 Funding.Web Link
How much will it cost me?
Each application is processed individually and Coaching Edinburgh can fund up to 100% of the costs of a coaching qualification. For further details on scholarship funding and pre-requisites for funding see the scholarship guidance notes:

Coaching Edinburgh works in partnership with Edinburgh Leisure Sport Development officers, Active schools co-ordinators, sports clubs, and Sporting National Governing bodies to provide coaching opportunities. Current opportunities can be found under ‘Coaching Opportunities’ on the website. Link
