Extreme Elite Prepares Meal for Hope Lodge Residents in St. Louis
On February 20, 2012, the 16U Extreme Elite softball team prepared a meal for the residents of the Hope Lodge in St. Louis. For the second year in a row, the players and coaches prepared a spaghetti dinner with a garden salad, garlic bread, brownies, and rice krispie treats.

Some of the residents were at the dinner that we prepared last year, Collinsville Extreme Club Director and 16U Head Coach, Brett Swip said. "They thanked us for coming back to prepare another meal. I told them it was our honor that they would allow us to share a dinner with them and swap some stories. Everyone has been touched by athletics in their life, so there are always some fun sports stories to be told."

In an effort to ease the burden of cancer, the American Cancer Society provides free housing to cancer patients traveling to St. Louis for treatment through the Hope Lodge. At Hope Lodge, patients live with other patients going through similar experiences and are supported by caring staff and volunteers. The nurturing, comfortable environment provided to patients during their stay allows them to focus on what is most important—fighting cancer! Hope Lodge is also a place to learn about cancer and how best to fight the disease. Guests have access to the American Cancer Society’s National Cancer Information Center 24-hour toll-free call center, Web site, and comprehensive cancer information. At Hope Lodge, cancer patients and their loved ones are armed with the vital information to help them make informed decisions.

"Laurie McClelland, a member of our coaching staff, is the driving force behind this event. Similar to our canned food drive, this event has been added to our annual community service efforts. A few years ago, we went to the Ronald McDonald house and made cookies for the children. That was a special trip also. With cancer affecting so many people, it’s always great to be able to help the American Cancer Society" Swip said.

For more details about the teams trip to the Hope Lodge, please see the press release.
