    Tryouts
Every year there is an increasing amount of players looking for more of a soccer challenge than a recreational league may offer are turning to “Select/Premier” travel teams. HCSC is one club that offers such teams and competitive environment. If you and your child are ready for a commitment to a higher level of competition then “go for it! It is a great learning experience!” It can’t happen if you don’t try in!

Many openings available for Select (U8-U12) and Premier (U13 and up) teams! To see the 2009-2010 try-out schedule please see below.

To aid you in your decision of whether or not you wish to have your child participate in the try-out process, we at HCSC want you to understand what a Select/Premier team is all about and what it takes to become a member of a Hamburg United travel team. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions.

What is a select travel team? A select team is one sponsored and operated by a soccer club. Each club may have teams ranging from ages 6 to 18. These teams participate in leagues and tournaments by traveling and playing other communities. Our select teams play in the Western Suburban Soccer League (WSSL) and our premier teams participate in the Michigan State Premier Soccer Program (MSPSP). Premier teams are usually teams that are ages level U13 and up. Participating on a travel team is highly encouraged for those players who are considering playing soccer in high school and beyond.

What do tryouts involve? This will differ from club to club. Typically players are asked to participate in a sort of mini-camp in which players are coached through various soccer skills, such as one-v-one, dribbling, speed drills, passing, three-v-three, four-v-four and full scrimmages.

How many days of tryouts do we have to attend? There are two scheduled days and attendances at both are strongly recommended. Players are sometimes nervous the first day and more relaxed the second day. Attending both days provides more of an opportunity for the player to be evaluated properly.

What are evaluators and coaches looking for? Every coach would like to have players with excellent soccer skills, great speed, intense competitive attitude and a positive learning attitude. Rarely does a player that makes a team excel in all of these categories. Younger soccer players may not have developed soccer skills but these can be taught. However at the older age brackets, soccer skills are critical for success.

How many players will a team take? Generally a team will take as many players as they feel possess the ability to compete at a select or premier level within the limitations of accepted WSSL and MSPSP roster sizes. Additional teams may be formed where possible.

How often are practices conducted? Practices can vary from one to three per week depending on the team and their game schedule. Just before the soccer season begins, some teams practice every day, just like a training camp. If your child is trying out for a select or premier team, you should ask the coach about his/her expected practice schedule for the coming season.

What about play time? Travel teams are very competitive and often the “everybody gets equal time” philosophy of recreational teams does not apply. During games, coaches make on the field decisions that are best for the team.

How far can we expect to travel? Away games are typically about a 30 minute to 1-hour drive away. Half of the scheduled games are at our home fields. Number of games played range from 8 to 10 per season.

What days are games played? Travel games are either on Saturdays and/or Sundays with the possibility of a couple of weeknight games per session. Times vary per team.

How serious is the commitment to travel soccer? Your commitment is substantial and should be considered in your decision for your child to play on a select or premier team. Once a player is selected to a travel team and accepts the offer, a contract between the player and the club will be signed. This contract is your commitment to the team beginning August 1, 2009 and ending July 31, 2010. During this time, the U8 through the U14 age brackets will participate in two outdoor sessions, fall and spring. Ages U15 and older teams participate with their club in their high school teams’ off-season. Travel teams also require their players to participate in indoor leagues, tournaments and may have skill development sessions at indoor facilities during the winter.

What are some of the costs that can be expected? A majority of the following costs is spread out over the course of several months and can also be reduced further by team fundraisers.
    Registration fee:
The fee for the 2009-2010 season is $265 for age brackets U8 to U14 and $190 for U15 and older. Included in the registration fee is one uniform(jersey, shorts, alternate t-shirt and socks), referee fees, HCSC sponsored activities, costs associated with field maintenance, club promotion, Hamburg Township fees, insurance and any other administrative fee associated with the operations of belonging to WSSL or MSPSP.
Additional equipment: Besides the normal purchase of soccer shoes, shin guards and soccer ball, there are also some additional expenses that are the responsibility of the players’ family. The purchase of a travel soccer bag and team warm-up uniform. The estimated cost of these ranges from $35-$95 and varies from team to team. Please ask the team's coach for more information.

Professional coaching/trainers: Varies by team. If a team has a trainer and/or a professional coach, the parent will have to pay for the professional’s time. Additional cost example:
Trainer: estimated cost $750-$1500 per season divided by the number of players on the team.
A paid coach: Total for each player on the team is $500. ($250 for the fall session and $250 for the spring).

Tournaments: Varies by team. Hamburg United teams U8 to U14 will participate in two club decided tournaments which is part of the registration fee. These tournaments are the Hamburg Invitational in August and usually the Novi Jaguars Tournament in May (the same week-end of Mother’s Day). U15 and above teams will attend only one of the mentioned tournaments. Any other tournaments that a team chooses to attend, the cost will be incurred by the parent of the player as does any travel costs related to any tournament whether local or away. Example: Team entry fee for a tournament may be an estimated $425 to $525 divided by the number of players on a team.
Winter League Indoor sessions: A majority of all U8-U14 teams participate in 1 to 3 indoor sessions. Estimated cost: $850 to $1500 per session divided by the number of players on the team.

While the cost of travel soccer can seem overwhelming, generally speaking, an estimated average cost per player ranges from $800 to $1500 per year depending on their team. The benefits a player gains from playing at a higher level of competition far out weighs the costs.

We want to have our child play on a select team, but transportation may sometimes be a problem. What can we do?: As with most teams, support from other parents on the team is essential. Many families will help with car-pooling if necessary. Once on a select team, inform the coach and the other parents of your need of assistance on this.

Please remember that unlike recreational soccer, not everyone trying out for a select or premier team will be chosen. If your child is not selected to play on a Select/Premier team this year or chooses to not participate, please still play soccer with HCSC! Your child can choose an in-house recreational team up to U14.
