7th Grade Falcons - Season Recap 2003
'03 Record ~ 17-2
As practice began in late July this season wasn't looking to have a whole lot of promise. Over 80% of our players had always competed in the #2 league. We were signed up to play in the always tough #1 league. After a few early season scrimmages and practices in pads things weren't looking good at all, the Falcons started off very slow.
Falcons opened play w/ a traditional early bowl game at C.B.F.O. The Falcons played much better than they had been practicing. We defeated the solid Admiral squad 26-0. We won our first three league games prior to hitting a mid-season slump. Losing one game handily (to C.B.F.O. who we previously beat 26-0) and next game tying another against a lower placing team (Bearden Bulldogs) very early in the season. Play-off hopes were looking glim at this point. The Falcons decided to come together and play with potential the coaches and fans new they had. We ended the regular season by thumping traditional power Pilot 28-0 and gaining a spot in the Metro Play-offs and the win also kept Pilot out of the play-offs.
In the first round of the 2003 Knox Metro Play-offs we were to play the defending city champion Holston Warriors (coach by Rev. Mike Chambers). As always Coach Chambers had a VERY VERY talented squad, loaded with athletes all over the field. Coach Chambers and Coach Josh's teams go back a ways as it was Chambers' Holston team who defeated Coach Josh's West Youth Sports team the previous year in the 11 & under Metro Championship. We knew the game was going to be tough. RB Adam Hickey got the fireworks started early as on the second play from scrimmage he took an off tackle hand-off 60+ yards to the endzone where he clearly smoked the Warrior defenders by 20 plus yards, coach Josh added "Hickey has unbelievable speed and once he's in the open field its over". It was a game that was back and forth all night. RB Adam Hickey of the Falcons and RB JeMarcus Davis of Holston put on a show for the packed and live crowd. In the end it was Hickey's 4 TD's over Davis's 3 TD's. Falcons came away with a very hard fought victory 28-24 and ended the season of the defending champion Warriors. According to Coach Josh "this was one of the best games I've ever coached in, VERY intense and you knew it wasn't over until three zeroes were on the scoreboard. Coach Chambers always has a talented group of athletes and has them ready for us so we knew it would be tough but our kids fought and believed and in the end got the job done".
The championship game had the Falcons pared up w/ upset minded Karns Beavers. The Beavers upset the #1 seed CBFO Admirals in the 1st round of the play-offs. So the Falcons knew to not over look the Beaver squad. We defeated Karns 40-16 in the regular season. We knew this time around would be tougher. Again RB ~ Adam Hickey was at his usual early; rushing for 6 TD's in the game. Micah Bolden (nose-guard) had the most TFL's (tackles for loss). In the end the Falcons came away with a 44-16 victory.
This was these kids first ever championship in youth football and were only two years off from there winless and scoreless season.
This was one of the most rewarding season's a coach could have. To take over a team who had never competed in the "A" league, a team who just two season's prior didn't score a single point all season long. For this team to rally around one another and win the Knox County Championship says alot of their character and the hard work they put in through-out the tough season. It certainly wasn't always easy but the kids got the job done, all the credit goes to them and the hard work and sweat they put in.
JeMichael Williams was the team's quarterback and did a solid job. RB Adam Hickey was majority of the offense. The 'o' line did a great job making holes for him (Jordan Phillips, Kadeem Blair, Mikey Driscoll and a couple others who were already mentioned anchored the O-Line). DL Micah Bolden, DL Vincent Johnson, DL Josh Turner, LB Keith Turner, DE Chris Hodge led the defense. Also making lots of plays on the year was Ernest Hollingsworth.
