July 2009
Dear RYSI Families:
As you know, safety is always our first priority at RYSI. While we have been fortunate to have very few major injuries in our program, the reality is that football & cheer are very much contact sports. In the United States, the annual incidence of sports-related concussion is estimated at 300,000. Although the vast majority of athletes who experience a concussion are likely to recover, it is critical that the athlete is fully recovered prior to further participation as athletes that are not fully recovered from an initial concussion are significantly vulnerable for a second concussive injury.
No athlete should return to sport or other at-risk participation when symptoms of concussion are present and recovery is ongoing.
In summary, the best way to prevent difficulties with concussion is to manage the injury properly when it does occur.
With that in mind, and in consultation with our medical director, RYSI is making available the ImPACT test. This neurocognitive test, which is optional for your child, has an excellent reputation amongst medical professionals. It provides a baseline evaluation which can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete's post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion.
RYSI has negotiated a group rate of $5 per player, and all data will be centrally stored for easy access should the need arise for your child. This test is only applicable to 5th, 6th 7th & 8th grade Tackle and Cheer families.
More information, and instructions on how to initiate the testing can be found here ImPACT Test. This program has an excellent reputation, and we hope you will consider conducting the ImPACT test for your child.
