2004 to 2007 In Brief
2004
SAVAGES JUNIORS
Savages Football Club junior section grew from 88 registered members in 2003 to 140 members this past season. Our under 6-age group showed the biggest growth with a total of 54 registered players compared to 22 the previous season. The under 6-age group was also our most successful section in the Maritzburg district league. The under 6A side won both the league and the cup competitions and scored a whopping 86 goals in these 2 competitions with only 1 goal against, undoable the most successful junior team in Maritzburg this year. Our under 6 B side also did well to finish joint second with a couple of other teams out of a total of 9 teams in the under 6 league.
Our under 7’s also did very well to finish runners up in their league. Our other age groups didn’t do as well as hoped, but with the 2 youngest age groups doing so well, it promises great things for the future of the oldest soccer club in South Africa. Also in District representation, Savages excelled by having 19 of our junior players selected to play for the Maritzburg District sides against Durban District sides, compared to 12 selected the previous year. Below a photo of our under 6A side, showing off all their silverware.
SAVAGES O35 TEAM
After comfortably winning the Pinetown and District over 35 league in 2003, we decided to move to the Durban Commercial over 35 league in 2004. It is of a much higher standard with most teams originally from the old Natal Football association Premier league. After an initial shaky start, we went unbeaten in the 2nd round until the final game, which we lost 1 – 2 to Stalla away. We ended up in 3rd place in the league with Westville in 1st place and Stella in 2nd place.
SAVAGES MASTERS
As the fitness improved, the team went from strength to strength and finished up 3rd in the league. This was our 1st year in the Pinetown District league so it was a very good result.
2005
Some of our teams did very well during the 2005 season. In the junior section our under 6A’s won their League and Cup competition and so did the under 8A’s. The under 7A’s won the Cup while the under 9A’s came runners up in the Cup competition and under 6C and under 11B finished runners up in their leagues. Apart from the MDFA league and cup competitions, our junior sides also won and /or finished runners up in many of the 5-a-side competitions.
In our senior section Savages also excelled with the senior side that played in the Pinetown league finishing runners up in that league and winning the cup. Our second senior side (the Barflies) won their league in the MDFA competition and our first over 35 side won the cup in the over 35 Pinetown league.
Apart from the outstanding results, Savages grew member wise at an exceptional rate with junior player numbers up to 187 registered players compared to the 2004 season’s 140, from 11 teams to 15 teams in 2005 and the senior section grew from 3 senior sides to a total of 5 in 2005.
The photo section has been updated with photos from the Lions 5-a-side, the Pirates 5-a-side, our Junior prize giving and the end of season camp. I didn’t take many photos at the end of season camp as not many people attended due to the foul weather as can be seen from the photos. Unfortunately yahoo where our photos are kept, downsize the photos no matter what size I upload them as. I do have the original sizes I uploaded it as, which is about A4 size if anyone would like to have them. Just email me.
2006
2006 was another very successful season with our under 6A side winning their league and cup competition, under 6C’s finishing runners up in the league and cup, under 7A also wining their league and cup while not conceding any goals through the season, under 8A’s winning their league, under 8D’s winning the cup and our under 9A’s winning the cup and finishing runners up in their league. They were very unfortunate as they should have won the league as well but lost it by one point due to an outstanding match which was not played by the cut off date due to a misunderstanding.
Our senior sides didn’t do as well as we hoped except for our O/35 Durban league side who won their league and our senior Pinetown league reserve side who finished runners up.
Our membership numbers has shown another record growth with the juniors up from 186 in 2005 and 144 in 2004 to a whopping 246 this year. Our senior section grew to about 100 members from 5 senior teams last season to 6 teams this season. It takes a lot of commitment and very efficient teamwork to reach such a level of growth and congratulations must go to hard workers like Ben Hartshorne, Mark Hydes, Gavin Lambooy and especially to our Chairman Greg Visick with his very professional leadership and hard work behind the scene.
2007
2007 Was our 125th year celebration and a function was held at Collegians to celebrate the event. Players, past and present arrived from all corners of the country to be part of this historic achievements with Clive Barker, a former Savages player and former most successful, Bafana Bafana (South African national football team) coach, as the guest speaker.
It was also one of the most successful seasons in the clubs history. In the senior section with 6 teams, the Pinetown reserve side won their league competition and the first MDFA side won the MDFA Cup competition. The over 35 side finished 3rd in their league. Our juniors were very successful with 10 of our sides through to the cup finals and quite possibly a new record.
Our under 6A’s and C’s were runners up in the Cup with the under 7A’s being the winners and our B side the runners up. Our under 8B’s and 9B’s caused a bit of an upset when they managed to beat our A sides in the finals. Our under 9D’s also finished runners up while the under 11B’s with veteran player / coach Shaun Markus as coach, had no trouble winning the gold. In the league competition our under 7A’s, under 9A’s and under 11B’s finished top in their leagues while the under 8A’s and 9D’s finished runners up.
Our membership numbers also shown another huge increase to the point of us overgrowing the Collegians facilities and forcing us to close registrations of new players a month before the MDFA cut off date.
