#5 Demons Win, Demons Win!
After a long and agonizing stretch to open the season (and let me clarify immediately that the pain and suffering was from the parents and the coaches who all just wanted this happy team to get a win under their belt to reward them for all their hardwork), the team hosted the Woods Harbour Rookie squad at the famed “Fly Dome” in Ohio, also known as the Ohio Ball Field, on an evening that would finally see them earn their first victory.
They were so happy. So proud. It was a long and very hard road to travel, but the destination was worth all the trials and tribulations for all the Demons (that name was proudly picked by the players themselves) : the game was the biggest event of the season for the team, whom then finished the season playing 500 ball.
Rumours of a Scary Jerry Curse (you see, Head Coach Jerry was away for the team’s first win, one of the only games Mr. Peterson would miss all season) began immediately but were quelled almost as quickly as the team made sure to give their head coach that warm fuzzy feeling shortly thereafter.
#4 Mosquito Bashers Unbeatable
With the mergence of two mosquito teams into one in 2006, the team expected to do well. But in no way shape or form was the baseball world ready for the 11 game winning streak that the team bashed out to open the season. With the bats still groggy from the long winter’s nap, the team used team speed and defence to jump all over each team they faced, scoring almost every runner that reached first base. With dominant pitching up and down the bullpen, the team even found themselves the topic of discussion on whether or not they should be bumped up a division to A for Provincial Playdowns. As we all know, that did not happen and the RATED R PROVINCIALS blasted into Shelburne in 2006, much like it did in 2007.
The team’s first lost came at the Seafest Tournament in Yarmouth to Woods Harbour in the Round Robin portion of the tournament, knocking them out of contention for the tournament championship. The team started a new winning streak the next day, claiming the Bronze medal at the Seafest Tournament and ending the season with over 25 wins.
#3 Peewees Win South District Playdown
In the most surprising story of the 2006 season, the Shelburne Peewee team upset everybody to claim the South District and the right to go to the Peewee R Provincials from this region. With a number of gifted athletes on the team, including Taylor Nash and Steven Davis, the team came together and found a way to win when they needed to. With coverage in the Coast Guard and massive congrats from the Association, the team went on to play well in their first baseball provincials, coming up short but growing through the first time experience (as we all know now, the core of this team went on to another Provincials in 2007)

#2 Sparkplugs Claim Rookie League Championship
Even though this moment is coming in at number two on this countdown, it is a lot closer to number one then a lot of you may think. With a core group of Senior Rookies leading the way, Coach Eric and his assistants, tore into the Year End Tournament on a mission and they simply would not be denied. On the hallowed grounds of the Clark’s Harbour Ballfield, the Shelburne Spark Plugs captured the Shelburne County House League Rookie Championship. An impressive win, this would be the only Shelburne County Championship won by any SAMBA team in 2006.

#1Mosquito Bashers Host Provincials, Finish Third in the Province
This event, from top to bottom, was one of the best Baseball Nova Scotia events held in the province of Nova Scotia in any division. With an army of volunteers and sponsors, the tournament committee and the host Shelburne Bashers ((forever embedded as the team that made the Bashers famous, Version 1.0 if you will, the beginning of all that comes after))), hosted a great tournament. Falling to the eventual RATED R CHAMPIONS Humber Park Hawks, the Shelburne Bashers finished third behind Bedford in an exciting and fun filled weekend. To put it into perspective from an unbiased point of view, here is some of the excerpts of a letter written to the Coast Guard following our Provincial Championship.
Nominated for the 2006 Association of the Year award by Humber Park, in a letter to the Editor (The Coast Guard 09-12-06), Rod Mountain, (Coach of the Humber Park Hawks), called our Provincial Tournament "one of the best run events that I think we have ever had the honour of participating in. Our whole team felt very welcomed and had a wonderful time." Continuing, he thanked Roddy Conrad, The Bashers, and "most of all the volunteers and sponsors", commenting that the "players were amoung the best behaved and the best skilled that we have ever met, our hats go off to the coaches and the parents of all the teams." The umpires did not go unnoticed either: "...some of the best umpires that I have ever had on a field, they were professional in every way and fair to all teams."
It was a great season, a season that will be remembered as the unofficial birth of the Basher Phenomenon.
Check the 2007 List to see who stands on the top of the mountain this year. Take Care Basher Nation!!!!!
