Varsity Assistant Coach - Mike Murphy

Mike grew up in Bronx, NY and very quickly found his passion in baseball. Mike was drafted as a right handed pitcher by the Cleveland Indians organization as an 18th round pick in 1983 out of Manhattan College in NY, and pitched for 5+ seasons, ultimately making it to the 40 man big league roster. Mike continued his education during baseball and graduated from Manhattan College in NYC in 1986, with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. In 1988 after retiring from baseball Mike began his career as an engineer and continues to work with companies in the manufacturing space. Upon moving to the Centerville area in 1998,  Mike began coaching travel baseball and most enjoys working with engaged baseball athletes at the high school level who have a goal to continue to learn the game and possibly have careers beyond high school. Additionally, Mike has provided youth pitching training and clinics for athletes in the Dayton region and ran the non-profit Reds Rookie Success League program in Dayton for 5 seasons.

Mike is the proud dad of two Centerville grads who have pursued careers in sports; Erin who is a health teacher at CHS and an Athletic Trainer for the Premier Network and Sean who played in the Oakland A’s system and was traded the Braves in 2022. Mike is married to his wife Marge of 30+ years and is blessed to have her in his life and that she understands what the game of baseball means to him.

After a short hiatus from coaching, Mike has returned to his boyhood roots and passion and is excited to join the CHS team. #EPND

What do you enjoy most about coaching?

There are a number of elements to coaching that I enjoy. First is a desire to instill baseball knowledge (IQ) and skills required to be successful. Most importantly, I want my players to learn to respect the game, their teammates and themselves as well as helping the players learn aspects of Mission and Vision which apply not only to sports but business.

Coaching provides me peace of mind. When I am on the field with the players, I forget the day to day distractions that life can bring. It is the place where my sole focus is on one thing, the success of the student athlete.

What is your position within program?

Assistant Coach focusing on throwing mechanics, working with the catching corp, and third base coach.

Favorite memory as a coach

That is an easy one...it is everyone of the players that played for me from 10U through to 17U and all the road trips, successes and learning opportunities with these kids (now men). These teams consisted at one time or another of some of Elks Baseball strong tradition of players. I am now continuing to build memories having joined the Elk Baseball family 2018. In short, it’s not just one memory, it is every one of those players and families that had an impact on the teams over the years.
