Babe Ruth League, Inc. realizes youth are the future of our nation.  They are our most important resources, and we must aim high for our children.  We are proud of our continuing goal to prepare young people to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood through organized baseball and softball.  Our objective is to assist them in becoming socially, ethically, emotionally, and physically competitive.  We also recognize the significance of ensuring our next generation's continuing scholastic needs.  It is for those reasons that we established the Babe Ruth League, Inc. College Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to former players.   Read More...

Happy Father's Day

Baseball and softball are great games in which a father can bond with his children.  America's pastimes have brought fathers and kids together for over a century.  Many dads are proud to carry the irrepressible tradition of baseball/softball on into another generation like their fathers and fathers' fathers did.  In 2010, we will be celebrating Father's Day for the 100th time since it first came into existence in 1910.  Last month, we honored the moms.  It is only fitting we pay respect to the "Diamond Dads."   Read More...

Coaches Corner

There's a fundamental spirit of fair and right play that reveals itself in all aspects of competition.  Cal Ripken, Jr. is a believer in the spirit behind rules.  He says that you shouldn't just read the rules, try to understand why they exist.  Read More...

Hey Blue...

Historically there were two schools of thought:  what was called the American League School  that favored the umpire to stand in a wrestler box or straddle stance directly behind the middle of the plate.  AL umpires used outside chest protectors.  The pad proves to be too bulky to work anywhere else but directly down the pipe.  This issue of Hey Blue deals with Plate Mechanics and Stances offered by Brent McLaren, retired amateur baseball umpire.   Read More...

As reported at the beginning of the 2010 season, the International Board of Directors approved the following rule change beginning with the 2010 season for the 13-15 baseball division:

The Bat (13-15) Division - The Babe Ruth Baseball 13-15 Division has adopted standards for metal bats that limit the diameter of a bat to 2 5/8".  Wood bats conforming to the dimensions described in Official Baseball Rule 1.10 are approved for use in Babe Ruth League, Inc.

As 2010 was a transitional year for the new bat requirement, Babe Ruth League allowed the use of both 2 3/4" and 2 58" bats during 13-15 local league play only.  However, only bats with a limited diameter of 2 5/8" will be allowed during 2010 13-15 tournament competition (District, State, Regional and World Series play).  This new rule will be enforced during 2010 13-15 tournament play.

On June 7th, George Herman "Babe" Ruth was officially inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.  While Ruth has been long recognized for his influence in Major League Baseball as an icon in the game as a player from 1914 to 1936, it is his humanitarian efforts and impact he had on society that will long be remembered through his induction to the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.  Countless accomplishments unfamiliar to most, speak to his influence on integrating baseball, changing the face of America's involvement in WWII and raising the spirit and hopes of children and young people throughout his career.  To read more about his induction and about the man who could really hold his public and served as a symbol to the nation's youth, click on the links below.

Ripken Baseball - Drill of the Month

Drill of the Month - High Tee - This variation on tee work can give any hitter a big boost in their approach to hitting the high strike.  Use your weight shift and get on top of the ball so you can drive the high pitch with authority.

Hitting the high pitch can be a challenge for many hitters.  Grab a bucket and set your tee on top of it so you can work on getting on top of the ball, even when its at the upper limits of your strike zone.  Watch Bill Ripken with the High Tee Drill -  Click Here

The Babe Ruth ID Card

Make sure your league takes advantage of the Babe Ruth I. D. Card.  Instead of writing all those cards out by hand, you can now take advantage of the information you already have entered in your league's site to electronically order cards.  Babe Ruth Headquarters prints them daily, and you'll have them back in no time!

Longwood, Florida Adopts Deployed Army Lieutenant

As a disabled veteran of the United States Army, Tom Melani of the Longwood, Florida Babe Ruth League is always looking for ways to show his support to deployed military overseas.  That is why he adopted a deployed military member from his community to serve as his team's honorary coach and acted quickly to get his team involved.  His team adopted Bryan Schmidt, a friend of Melani's neighbor who happened to be a First Lieutenant serving in Iraq with the U. S. Army.

Message from the President

May 27, 2010

27, 2010

Babe Ruth League, Inc. is all about the kids! Not just the gifted and talented or the

above average – it is for all kids, no matter what their physical or mental ability.

It is important we offer every player a chance to succeed, to savor their moment in

the spotlight, to have their 15 minutes of fame and to feel the excitement of success,

no matter how small or how large.

Babe Ruth League, Inc.’s priority is on the local league experience. We are a

community-based program that cares about your children, families and the purity of

the cultural life enrichment that we have to offer.

Almost everything you need to learn about life you can learn from participating in

youth baseball and softball. Many life lessons on learned on the diamond. Winning is

certainly the icing on the cake, and it’s easy to coach superstars. However, when you

teach that player that doesn’t know how to do it, that kid who hasn’t had a hit all

season, and they hit a double, you see that glow in their eyes and you see their parents’

excitement – that’s the stuff they talk about for weeks!

Memories are more important than wins and losses. The T-Ball team where the coach

tells them to “fire to first” and they look around and have no idea where “first” is.

Actually, for this age level, the favorite part of the game is when they get their snack.

We’ve heard many stories about how an entire field would run for the ball and pile on

top of each other. Or where one player was told by his dad that he forgot his cap, and

the player runs off the field to get it, while the ball bounces between his feet and

runners circle the bases.

Our unstated mission is to include everybody in the love of the game. However, there

is another circle of baseball and softball teams outside our program called “travel

teams”. These teams are more competitive, accept players on a try-out basis only and

are NOT restricted by geographical boundaries when recruiting players.

Babe Ruth League, Inc. is a program that hasn’t lost touch with the simple things in life.

Family, friends, good times and a chance to make perfect memories. We want to keep

our kids’ experiences positive and fun!

I am asking every parent, coach and manager to submit stories about their kids’ special

experiences. We want to share the spirit with all! We want our membership to be able

to read about our kids and their experiences on and off the field. And we hope our

membership will share these stories with their kids as a source of inspiration and

education. Let them read about the Blue team that lost all of their games but one – but

that one winning game was filled with many memories they will cherish forever. Let

them read about Johnny who finally caught his first pop-up after missing many others

in the outfield. What about Sharon who finally got her first hit off of the best pitcher in

the league. There was Billy who sold more candy then his entire team combined; Lucy

who purposely missed a ball so the other team could score at least one run in the game;

and Greg who carried his “buddy” Alex (a physically handicapped youngster) around

the bases to score his first home run.

Remember why we are here – for the kids. Spotlight your participants!! Give them

their 15 minutes of fame. Submit all stories and accompany photos to
