We have two forms that you needs to review: You can find these forms on the "Rules & Regulations" section of this website.
** Coaches Code of Ethics: This form is a guideline for what Chapel Grove Optimist Club expects from each coach. Please review this sheet & sign - please turn into the Football Rep.
** Coaching Application/Pop Warner Form -- this form is required to be completed along with a copy of your drivers license. Chapel Grove Optimist Club is required to do a background check on you before final approval for coaching.

Youth sports programs allow a child to build his/her skill level in a sport so that as they reach a more competitive sports program - they are ready. We will be posting a page on this website soon to show where our past athletes are now. Darren Stillwell (shown in this photo) aka "Moose on the Loose" is now at Southwest Middle School were he helped to lead the team to the Gaston County Middle School Championship where they won the 2008 Championship.
**UPDATE 7-7-08: Brothers - J.T. Stillwell & Darren Stillwell are now practicing for the 2008 Hunter Huss Football Season. As fellow wildcats we must be ready to support our growing athletes. Come out to watch the games & root on these hard working - focused young men !!

POP WARNER - CHAPEL GROVE GENERAL INFO
Chapel Grove Optimist has played Pop Warner Football for many years. All practices are on the football field at Falls Family Memorial Park/Chapel Grove Optimist. We are not allowed to begin practice before August 1st of each year & the season is normally over around November 15 . Practice is normally every night of the week except Wednesday. Almost every Saturday (after Labor day) is a game day. Games are held at different locations each week. Each club involved with Greater Gaston Pop Warner is invited to host games on their field, which allows us to travel to fields such as - North Lincoln, Salvation Army, GBGC, McAdenville, Stanley, Union Road, Belmont , Cherryville, & more. Games normally last about 1 1/2 - 2 hours each.
The structure with pop warner is this: Pop Warner (National) - Midsouth Pop Warner (Regional) - Greater Gaston Pop Warner (Local) - Chapel Grove (individual teams).
Pop Warner requires us to have certain information on each child & each coach. Coaches are required to fill out an application & we are required to do a background search for any charges on a minor. Chapel Grove Optimist reserves the right to refuse anyone that request to be a coach.
Each child must provide : an actual notarized birth certificate, a final report from the previous school year, a medical release (to give permission to perform emergency care), an up to date physical form (within 1 year), a small photo (parents do not get back). ALL OF THESE ITEMS MUST BE TURNED IN PRIOR TO THE CHILDS FIRST PRACTICE IN ORDER FOR YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE IN FOOTBALL !!!!!!!!
Each football player is assigned a : football helmet, pads, practice pants &game pants that do not belong to your child. These items MUST be returned at the end of the season or the parents will be billed for un-returned items.
However, each child will receive a pair of socks, a mouth piece & a game jersey - they can keep these items.
On a more personal note: Chapel Grove (CGOC) would like for each parent to understand that everyone that is involved at CGOC is NOT paid. We volunteer because we enjoy being around these kids. We get to know them, cut up with them & hopefully if they need someone to talk to - they will understand they can come to us if needed. Being together with their friends, learning to work together, getting disiplined together, accomplishing a common goal will only help these children in the future. WE ARE PROUD TO GIVE THEM AN ALTERNATIVE TO BEING INACTIVE & FINDING SOMETHING TO ENTERTAIN THEMSELVES IN A HARMFUL WAY.
Our football program, however, suffers each year because the person that is committed to being the "Football Representative for CGOC" is also a volunteer & each year it becomes more difficult to organize the paperwork, equipment, budget, coaches, etc.
+++Paperwork - these are the items needed for Pop Warner requirements. Normally the "Football Rep" is a coach & needs to collect paperwork on all teams & keep up a log of what he has collected & still needs to collect. It is very difficult to find time (while coaching & giving out equipent) to speak to each parent in order to request needed paperwork. Some parents never come to practice at all...
+++Equipment - We assign equipment each year & thru wear & tear or a child not returning equipment WE RUN OUT. Each year on average CGOC spends about $6,000.00 plus on jerseys & equipment. At the end of each year we still owe approximately $3,000.00 to Sports Center or Essics.
+++ Budget - As mentioned with equipment FOOTBALL IS NOT CHEAP !! We normally do a fundraiser through football season & ask the parents to help. $70.00 for your sign up fee does not cover needed equipment, jersey, socks, mouth piece, trophy & banquet. We must raise money somehow. Parents we need your help to make football break even at the end of the year.
+++Coaches & Team Moms : Yes we do background checks on anyone involved with your child. Yes these people do volunteer their time after they leave work everyday. They enjoy it, PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT IF YOU LEAVE YOUR CHILD AT PRACTICE OR A GAME. YOU MUST BE BACK TO PICK THEM UP ON TIME. THE COACH IS SPENDING HIS/HER TIME WITH YOUR CHILD AND WOULD LIKE TO GO HOME WITH HIS/HER KIDS ON TIME. PLEASE PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES - WE ALL HAVE OTHER OBLIGATIONS TO OUR HOMES - OUR JOBS & OUR FAMILIES
The football rep. oversees the football program & all that is involved, including Greater Gaston Pop Warner meetings. These meeting are held on Sundays & Wednesday nights (due to every other football rep is also a coach & on the field every other night of the week). These meetings last approximately 2 hours each, they involve voting, learning about requirements, arguing & reviewing the rules of Greater Gaston & Pop Warner National. Because of all of the demands on a football rep., no one stays a rep for the following year. It is too demanding on each person, therefor our football program does not grow. Parents seem to become disappointed with the program feeling like the rep or coach is not doing their part. Parents we need you too. We (a few of us) can not do this alone. This is OUR COMMUNITY and OUR CHILDREN, you should want to get involved. This is not an attack on parents but hopefully it will be an eye opener for all volunteer groups that rely on dedicated people, willing to help out a common cause.
