    Thanks, kid
    by J. Kyle
    Published: Baseball Almanac (2003)

Thanks kid for being the reason,
I get to coach another season.
Who was more nervous that very first day?
You just learning, or me who must teach you to play.

Out on the diamond I feel like a kid again,
Yet after each practice and game my age settles back in.
My muscles would ache and bones feel sore,
A little ice and some ointment and I’m better than before.

A few moments each game I would steal far away,
Back to a time when I could still play.
The boyhood memories came rushing back in,
Just like a good slider complete with the spin.

That ol’ team was a rough and tumble bunch,
We would play all day and never eat lunch.
We would play anyone, anytime, anywhere,
But no other team could give us a scare.

That old sandlot is still there today,
Now sadly the boys no longer come to play.
The grass grows tall where home plate once stood,
A long forgotten landmark in the old neighborhood.

“Coach, hey Coach” I hear from a place far, far away,
“Are you going to pitch to me sometime today?”
Suddenly, I am standing back on the mound,
Surrounded by my players just milling around.

I am back to the game, with you at last,
My boyhood memories tucked back in the past.
“Hey Coach, everything alright” I am asked with a grin,
“Just perfect kid. Hey, thanks again.”

... and the ChicaGo Roos were formed.
In January of 2003 Jose Munoz and Terry O'Donnell assembled an All Star team of baseball players that excited many with their skills and potential. In retrospect many felt this team would have enjoyed more success had they faced better competition sooner. With this in mind and an uncertain future at area house leagues, the coaches proposed keeping most members of the team intact and becoming an independent travel only team. In July of that same year, on the trip to Photo Day, Terry O'Donnell had a conversation with David O'Connell. David expounded upon an idea of his to name a team the Kangaroos. O'D transposed the name to the ChicaGo Roos and brought it to the other coaches. The name was embraced and we set out to evolve into our new entity. William A. Feliciano Sr. then agreed to join the team as Head Coach, bringing a vast knowledge of the game. Many challenges lie ahead and we'll meet them head on, persevere and succeed. Join us, it's going to be a great journey!

    Quote of the Day

July 29, 2005 --- "Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away."

    -- Marcus Aurelius(121 A.D. - 180 A.D.), Roman Emperor and Philosopher

    Roos on TV!

The team extends a grateful thank you to Mr. Steve Brauntuch for the video story he did about the Roos late last month. It was a positive and balanced view of the Roos and our players. It aired on Friday June 17th. It was part of the Medill Report broadcast at 6:30 PM on WYCC, local channel 20. The team would appreciate anyone who recorded the Roos segment of the show to contact the team. We would then produce copies for interested team members.

    Don't Panic!

    --Walter Alston, HOF Dodger Manager
The Roos got off to a rocky start, but didn't panic, and are picking up steam. Hang in there, Roos faithful, the best is yet to come!

    FAREWELL

We've been thinking about the end of the season for the last few weeks. Yet today we must consider ourselves lucky. We have been in different ballparks all year, had our ups and downs and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from all you fans.

Look at these grand fellows. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of a career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, we're lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Luis Colon, Anthony Feliciano, Frank Hill, Nick Kacheris, Alex Kopf, Steve and Willie Martinez, Brian Mullen, Joey Munoz, Billy O'Donnell and Jordan Schleichkorn? Let's not forget all that Kuka and the coaches did. We also had the chance to play with John Kinsler, Jack Cinoman, Kane Hernandez and Alex Bolling. To have spent most of the year with these wonderful people and to have spent the tournament times together? Sure, we're lucky.

We salute all the fathers and mothers who work so their children can have an education and build their lives - it's a blessing. And when these young men have teammates who have been behind them every day and shown so much courage - those are the finest times that can be.

In closing, we say that leaving may be a tough break, but we have an awful lot to be thankful for.

    Roos in Omaha

The Roos finally embark on their annual trip to Omaha, NE today. Players and their parents should call Terry on his cell phone when they arrive at the hotel, regardless of time. Expect to be assigned an early morning game on Thursday. The team has requested a later start, but it is not guaranteed. The Roos will hold team meetings tonight after Terry and José have received our schedule and directions to fields.

The team will attend one game of the NCAA College World Series together. The game to be attended will be determined on Thursday, after our game.

    Off-season Plans

In 2004 the ChicaGo Roos began play as an independent travel baseball team. The Roos were fortunate enough to be accepted for membership in the prestigious Suburban Power Baseball League. The SPBL is comprised of ten of the top twenty teams as thirteen year olds in Illinois. Our record demonstrates the type of challenge we faced. In 2005, the SPBL will play as 14 year olds and add three new teams to the league. Two of these teams were also ranked in Illinois’ top ten as 13-year-old teams to make the SPBL the most competitive and challenging league for 14 year olds in Illinois.

Suburban travel baseball teams often hold an edge on teams from within the city. They usually have access to training facilities and funding that is difficult to replicate for a team from the city. Travel teams also routinely work on baseball practically year round. While this would seem to point toward burnout, many players and their families eagerly sign on for this type of commitment. The Roos regard these facts as more challenges to be overcome. The team is taking steps to provide team members with training equal to what suburban teams acquire for their players. There will be extra costs involved, but the team, as always, will balance team needs with families’ financial abilities.

The Roos plan for their players to be well-rounded individuals, competing in arenas beyond baseball. We also know that to be competitive with suburban baseball teams and in keeping with the philosophy of the Roos, there are certain roads we need to follow.

The Roos have access to the gymnasium of St. Mary’s Hospital on Saturday afternoons from 12:00 noon until 3:00 PM. Roos team members are involved in baseball hitting and pitching workouts to prepare for a challenging 2005 season in the Suburban Power Baseball League.

The Roos look forward to meeting the challenges of 2005 and fulfilling the philosophical goal of preparing our young men for the next level of competitive baseball.

    Parents of 8th Grade Roos:

    • Many of the 2005 ChicaGo Roos are currently in 8th grade. Most schools hold extra activities for graduating 8th graders. The team wishes all graduating 8th graders to enjoy these rites of passage.

    · Players are not yet aware of the difficulties of scheduling and forget to alert the team of up-coming activities through school that will affect their availability for Roos games and/or tournaments.

    • Parents, please advise Terry O'Donnell, team Manager, of all dates when your son will not be available, as soon as possible, so that the team does not schedule games or enter tournaments when the team will not have enough players to compete.

    AN END TO ERRORS

There actually is a way to eliminate all errors in baseball and all the
associated pressures – it is called playing safe. If our infield always plays really
deep, we are much less likely to be burned by a hard ground; it will slow some before
it gets to us. And if we take more time with throws to the bases, fewer balls will sail
off target. If our outfielders always slow up and take fly balls on an easy bounce
they are less likely to make a mistake on those near-impossible diving catches. If
our pitchers always put the ball over the middle of the plate, they won't walk any
batters and they won't hit any either.

And if they don't try to throw so hard they
might not have as many wild pitches. If our catchers never call for curves or
off-speed pitches they won't have to try to block as many balls in the dirt. If our
batters only swing at the easy-to-read belt-high fastballs they will foul off far
fewer pitches. If our base runners never try to steal they won't get caught.

Obviously this won't work. It might eliminate errors; it won't win ball games.
Baseball demands an odd mix of aggression and consistency. We have to take
chances but we also have to know which chances are worth taking.

All players need to learn to shake off each error - forget the play as soon as it's
over and get ready for the next one.

The Roos are a work in progress. Several players have undertaken new positions
this year. Some adaptations have taken longer than others. The Roos are a very
talented and close group. We will click and when we do …

ChicaGo Roos in Chicago Parent Magazine

The ChicaGo Roos, Brian Mullen, manager Terry O’Donnell, and his son Billy are prominently mentioned in an article in the March 2005 edition of Chicago Parent Magazine. Roos Seeking Home Field

Due to circumstances beyond the team’s control, the Roos are in need of a field large enough to hold a high school dimension game. The Roos are capable of paying a small stipend for this use. We are looking for approximately eight dates over April, May and June. Please contact Terry O’Donnell at chicago.roos@gmail.com with any suggestions.

Two of these teams were also ranked in Illinois’ top ten as 13 year old teams to make the SPBL the most competitive and challenging league for 14 year olds in Illinois.

The Roos plan for their players to be well rounded individuals, competing in arenas beyond baseball. We also know that to be competitive with suburban baseball teams and in keeping with the philosophy of the Roos, there are certain roads we need to follow.

Beginning in November of 2004, the Roos will have access to the gymnasium of St. Mary’s Hospital on Saturday afternoons from 12:00 noon until 3:00 PM. We are inviting all Roos to join their teammates during November for basketball and other non-baseball competitive fun on Saturday afternoons. Beginning in December, the Roos will begin off-season conditioning. Team members will stretch and participate in non-weight strength training, without disrupting families’ holiday plans. In January of 2005, Roos team members will begin baseball hitting and pitching workouts to prepare for a challenging 2005 season in the Suburban Power Baseball League.

The Roos look forward to meeting the challenges of 2005 and fulfilling the philosophical goal of preparing our young men for the next level of competitive baseball.

    Omaha Trip a Success

The Roos traveled to Omaha, NE to participate in the Super Series Network Crowne Series tournament. In addition to winning three games while losing two, the players earned entry into the Super Series Network Tournament of Champions and had a great time. Players swam, attended an NCAA College World Series game and bonded with each other.

    Perception is Reality

(A Tip for players entering high school level competition)

The way you act is how others perceive you. The way you conduct yourself on a baseball field in practice and games goes a long way as coaches determine how you will benefit the team. Your talent level is what it is. You can improve your skill level and you can have a positive approach. It takes no talent to hustle.

    · Respect the game.

    · Play with class.

    · Take Pride in the way you play the game.

    · Show an aptitude to learn. (Be Coachable)

    · Understand that failure is a part of baseball and learn to react in a mature fashion.

    · Always try to contribute something positive to the team (no matter how small).

Remember, you never know who is watching.

    Player Fees Due

The Roos player fees are due.

In order for the team to pay league fees on time, order uniforms for the 2005 season and begin entering 2005 tournaments, payments are required to be made when due. Check the 2005 Roos Calendar in column on the left for payment schedule.

Contact Terry O'Donnell, Manager, with any questions.

    Special Recognition

The Roos have been fortunate to have a volunteer each year as “bat-person.” This year the Roos welcome Isabel ‘Kuka’ O’Donnell to this role as well as scorekeeper. Isabel, a 12-year-old girl who did the original design for the team’s uniforms last year, is devoted to the Roos and her big brother Billy. The entire Roos family is grateful to ‘Kuka’ for all her contributions to the team.

The 2005 ChicaGo Roos Suburban Power Baseball League schedule has been announced. Players and their families should check the schedule and/or the Roos Calendar for schedule conflicts and notify Terry O'Donnell

Ty Cobb holds the best career batting average in Major League history at .366
This means that he failed at the plate 63.3% of the time.
Baseball is a game of failure.
Successful players learn to deal with failure and leave it behind them.

As We Head into Fall ...
August 7, 2004  --   As the Roos head toward the end of the spring/summer season and point towards fall baseball and next year, it's a good time to reflect about where we've been and where we're going.

The Roos were formed because local house leagues did not offer the competition coaches felt these young men should play in order to improve their skills.

In our first year as a travel team we faced innumerable challenges. The entire year was one of learning new ways of doing things and ways to get better. These lessons were not easy.

As the season draws to a close the Roos prepare to say goodbye to teammates that will not be returning next year and welcome new teammates. To those that will not return for the 2005 season, we gratefully acknowledge their contributions and offer our thanks and best wishes for the future. To those that will come after them, welcome to our family.

The 2005 season will again find the Roos in the Suburban Power Baseball League. We will venture forth into a variety of tournaments to battle for top spots. As we prepare over the fall and winter to face the challenges before us there are certain thoughts we will keep in mind:

"The one key point about having the so- called 'great player' on a team - It doesn't mean a thing if he doesn't perform with the team in mind." -- John Madden

"A player that makes a team great is more valuable than a great player."

"Don't let winning make you soft. Don't let losing make you quit. Don't let your teammates down in any situation." -- Larry Bird

"Spectacular achievements are always preceded by unspectacular preparation" -- Roger Staubach

God, bless all once and future Roos.

    August Birthdays
August 8, 2004  --   Happy birthday to Ulises (Aug. 1st) and Carlitos (Aug. 15th), both original members of the team.

    A Roos Christmas
    December 24, 2004  --

    Borrowed from …
    'Twas the Night Before Christmas
(With apologies to Major Henry Livingston Jr.)

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
    Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
    In hopes that the Roos soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
    While visions of baseball danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and ten tiny Roos,

With a little (?), old driver, so lively and fleet,
I knew in a moment it must be O’D.
More rapid than eagles his Roos they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Joey! Now, Billy! Now, Willie and Alex!
On, Anthony! On Stevie! On, Brian and Ivan!
    Come on, David and Eli!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Now hop away! Hop away! Hop away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the housetop the Roos they flew,
With the sleigh full of bats, and O’D too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each spiked foot.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney O’D came with a bound.

He was dressed all in Roos-wear, from his head to his foot,
    And his clothes were all tarnished with field-dust and soot;
A bundle of bats he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

    Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
    And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to the Roos gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"A Roos CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!"

    Condolences

    February 11, 2005  --
The Roos extend their condolences to
    Alex Kopf and his family
on the loss of Alex's father.

March 22, 2005  --   The ChicaGo Roos recognize that young athletes can be tempted to follow the lead of misinformed individuals. Considering the current state of Major League Baseball, players and parents would be wise to be completely informed as to the dangers of performance enhancing substances such as steroids. The following article posted on the Mayo Clinic web site offers a comprehensive view of these dangerous substances.

    May 8, 2005  --

    Happy Mother's Day

The Roos honor all our mothers today and will not play baseball. Mothers are not always recognized for the tremendous contributions they make to a baseball team. We wish to take this day to remember all they have always done for us.

Teams will be seeded for the playoffs after their first two games. We might play at 1:00 PM or at 3:00 PM depending on our performance in the morning, coupled with Thursday's result. If we play at 1:00 PM and win, we will also play at 5:00 PM. The playoffs will conclude on Sunday July 2nd.

    Players: Come ready to play!!

November 16, 2003  --   The ChicaGo Roos have joined the Suburban Power Baseball League in the American League Division for the 2004 season. Formed two years ago, the SPBL boasts one of the strongest leagues top to bottom in the state. The SPBL is a USSSA sanctioned Major League and as such offers USSSA World Series bids to their top teams. Squads such as the Schaumburg Seminoles, Schaumburg Redhawks, Lombard Launchers and McHenry County Hurricanes enable teams in the league to face some of the stiffest competition available. The Berwyn Bulldogs and the Menomonee Clubbers also have joined SPBL for the upcoming season. Top drawer competition will prepare the Roos to face any foe on the field. League play will be comprised of 26 games plus a league tournament in early July 2004. Follow the Roos as we embark on an exciting journey through our inaugural season.
