Connor Brown
Midget U18 Travel

Connor Brown
Senior, Dulaney High School
First-year with Harford North Stars

Connor started playing hockey when he was 11.  He played varsity ice hockey as a freshmen at Boys Latin before transferring to Dulaney High.  While at Dulaney, he organized the first-ever ice hockey team in Baltimore County since the early 1970's.  The Dulaney Ice Hockey team plays in the Eastern Conference of the MSHL with powerhouses such as Easton, Queen Anne's, Severna Park and Fallston.  The team went 1-10 in the conference but the groundwork was in place for ice hockey in Baltimore County.  This year, 20 student-athletes are on the team and they're ready to challenge those powerhouse teams!

Connor was nominated for the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2009 for organizing the team.

Connor also is very active in lacrosse and this past spring he was the assistant coach for the 10-11 year old Cockeysville Lacrosse Club. He is also a member of the Dulaney lacrosse team and plays summer club lacrosse with the Whips and Raptors and is currently looking to play lacrosse in college and major in Education (History) or Sports Management. Connor is a senior this year and enrolled in the Parallel Enrollment Program (PEP) between Dulaney and CCBC-Essex.  He takes classes at CCBC in the morning and goes to Dulaney in the afternoon. The college credits he earns at CCBC are transferable to his college choice. Connor also works part-time at Play it Again Sports-Cockeysville, he says," Drop by, shop and say hi".

Madison Nelson
Mite Travel

Congratulation goes to #11 Madison Nelson of the North Stars Travel Mite B team for being selected February’s player of the month. After playing on the North Stars cross-ice mite team last year, this has been Madison's first year of playing full ice. As a multi athlete who balanced the end of her soccer season with the beginning of this years hockey season, she was able to make the transition with a larger ice surface as well. As the only girl with lots of new teammates to get to know, Madison was quite timid at first. In the last few months however, we have noticed a difference when Maddie has not been able to attend a game. Her presence has been an asset for our mite team. Her strength on the ice has been a tremendous help especially when we play against those bigger and faster teams which seems to be every team we play. She is one of the most coachable players on the team being attentive at all times, always listening and learning.

As coaches at the mite level we set out to teach every kid every position so that when they get older they are versatile, can pick, and choose for themselves which position they would like to concentrate on. Madison plays her position no matter where we send her, which as any good team knows is critical for team play and filling those lanes on the ice. As she continues through the years with the attitude she has had this year, she will surely succeed in any position. Already this year Madison has earned her name on the score sheet with a goal against the Montgomery Silver Blue Devils as well as two assists. No matter what the circumstance, you can always find a smile out of this young lady because she always seems eager to have fun learning the game of ice hockey and that is the player that every team needs!

K.C. Chaney
Midget Rec.

Congratulations to KC Chaney from the North Stars Midgets Team for being the Player of the Month!  KC is in his 6th season as a North Star.

KC has been with the North Stars program since the beginning.  He began to show interest in hockey while watching the 2002 Winter Olympics.  KC then began his hockey career doing his Hockey Basics with Mike Shramik and Ed Slusher at Ice World.  He was then placed on the Pee Wee team with Bob Goodwin and Wayne Hendricks as coaches.  KC has skated for many NS coaches and teams over the years, including Ray Uroda, Rich Galasso, and Adam Judd.

KC is the team captain of the NS Midgets squad and he is also one of the team captains of the Fallston Cougars team.  Although KC is a defenseman, he is currently the second highest scorer for the NS team and leads in assists with 5.

KC is currently a senior at Fallston High School where he excels at academics.  He is ranked 2nd in his class of over 400 students with a senior GPA of 4.85.  KC is also the president of the Fallston High School National Honor Society.  KC is also part of the “That’s Academic” team at his high school.  He hopes to be attending college at University of Delaware, University of Maryland, or Virginia Tech – pursuing a degree in Chemistry.

KC also volunteers his time with the Appalachia Service Project.  He has donated a week of his summer vacation for the last 4 years going to the Appalachia area to help build and repair homes in underprivileged areas of the region.

Some of KC’s hobbies are music, skiing, and reading. His favorite team is the Washington Capitals.

In conclusion, KC is a quiet leader of the NS Midget team and leads by example.  He gives full effort on every drill, practice, shift, and game.  KC understands that you get out of hockey (and life) exactly what you put into it.

Congratulations again to a truly worthy player of this award!!

Evan Klein
U16 B travel
Fifteen year old Evan Klein is in his 5th season of ice hockey.  At age nine, he began his interest in hockey when he attended a summer camp for inline hockey at the local recreation council.  He quickly found a youth inline hockey league at the Jewish Community Center in Owings Mills.  But he wanted more time than the Fall and Spring league could offer.  At age eleven, he started playing ice hockey at Ice World with the Baltimore Youth Hockey North Stars under Coach Ray Uroda.  The team really bonded, but at the end of the year went separate ways as some boys moved to Bantam, some went to Peewee travel and others to Rec teams.  Evan played two more years of Rec level hockey as a defenseman and was leading the team in goals.  Halfway through his first year of Bantams, his team was short offensive players for a game and Coach Dave Ranney asked Evan to move up to fill in.  He enjoyed the move and has played offense ever since.  He was awarded the Baltimore Youth Hockey REC MVP in 2007.  Last year he moved to travel level with the newly formed Harford North Stars, where his team played as independents.  He was voted team captain by his teammates and led his Bantam B travel team in goals.  The Bantam B team played in the York Thanksgiving Tournament in 2007, bringing home the first Harford North Stars trophy when they came in 2nd place.  His team also participated in the year end B Tournament in Oaks, PA and although they again came in 2nd, they did sweep the skills portion with Evan contributing by winning the shooting competition.  This year, a number of the players from Evan’s first team have reunited with Coach Ray Uroda in the Harford North Stars U16 B travel.  This team is the first Harford North Stars Midget level to be accepted into the CBHL.

Evan was a member of the Baltimore JCC Maccabi Inline Hockey team the past two years.  They travelled to Orange County, CA in 2007 and Detroit MI in 2008 to participate in the JCC Maccabi Games.  In the Fall 2006 Inline Hockey league at the JCC, he was awarded MVP for the Intermediate league.

Evan is a sophomore at Dulaney High School where is a member of their first ever Dulaney Hockey Club. They will play in the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League against other public school teams in the Eastern league.  He is an honor student with a GPA of 3.2 freshman year.

A year and a half ago Evan started playing the drums when his friends’ rock band needed a new drummer.  They play at local venues including the Recher Theater in Towson, Fletcher’s and Brass Monkey in Fells Point and Sonar in Baltimore City.  Evan auditioned for the Wind Ensemble at Dulaney High and was accepted into the percussion section of this GT level course.  He plans to audition for the Dulaney High Jazz band in November.
