BBC Select Teams Gear up for the 2009-2010 Season
A Different type of AAU Experience

Players and parents are bombarded every year with offers to try out and play for one team or another. Extravagant promises about the coming season are part of the pitch; as are guarantees about the position, place and role he or she will have with their group. What’s more, “name-dropping” of other talented athletes, said to be on board with that team are tossed about. And don’t forget the all-too-typical plan to “get her seen” or “get him in front of college coaches” by attending expensive, out-state exposure tournaments. Sometimes, a team’s win total from last season “feeds” the interest from new players looking to join on. Player or parent, assumes (most times incorrectly) that this is the “team to be on” to get the experience described, that has eluded the player thus far in their career. Because of course, only the best players are part of the “X” organization or “Y” club or “Team Z.” A great deal of this probably sounds familiar to you. Because this is the way it’s been done for over a decade, how teams “out-recruit” one another. It really is a flawed way to run an organization; promising conditions with factors which you can not always control, or making promises you can not always keep.

The Michigan AAU believe from most teams is we have to follow suit, trying the same, tired-old methods. Because it’s not building a team at all, it’s merely assembling talent, oftentimes using any means necessary to accomplish this end. We’re after something much more authentic, something that will be everlasting, something that sells itself.

Others “say it” in their rhetoric, we’ve put it in our name: a System of Elite-Level Exposure Coaching and Training. We take a refined, systematic approach, done at an operating tempo and clip, that is truly advanced. We provide the opportunity for success through the trifecta of enhanced contact and exposure; genuine, quality coaching, and ongoing skill and physical training in next-level concepts. Our philosophy will follow that outline, our coaches will set the benchmark, our players will fulfill the requirements, and our teams will have as complete an experience as any in the state. And yes, we’ll win a lot of basketball games!

We’ve heard that some people say our teams are not that good, that we cost too much, that we don’t play “real basketball” (whatever that is!), or that the so-called “talent” does not play for us, and that we can’t get you seen by the big schools, etc. Maybe these things are all true, or maybe others are concerned that we have something special to offer that they can not. Many have chosen other teams over ours Because they’re lazy and don’t want to have practice to perfect their craft (but that’s what they’ll be doing in college.) They don’t want to be part of a team collective and play a true system (but that’s what they’ll do in college.) They do not want to be coached (but that’s what they’ll get in college); or to train (but that’s how you prepare for college.)

If you’re athletic, you stand out. Once seen, your talent may be enough to get you there. Once there, your desire may be enough to get you in the game. But everyone at this level is athletic; a lot of girls have talent; and a lot of guys have desire. What keeps you there, and keeps you on the floor, demands more. And most young people don’t have it. It’s the byproduct of the cooperatively competitive environment you haven’t experienced...yet. This enables you to move past those that are just athletic, have talent, or have desire. Together with this, we hope to arrive at a definitive plan and process to reach your goal of playing collegiate basketball.

The purpose of the BBC Select and our Coaches and Staff are to develop fundamentally complete players who will be prepared to perform immediately, and experience success at the next/collegiate level.

Our team approach is to teach basketball in a challenging and productive learning atmosphere; demanding academic excellence, player dedication, self discipline, and the very best efforts of every member. This develops an environment conducive to individual and team performance, pride in the group, enhanced exposure to college coaches, improvement, having fun and personal fulfillment.

A winning relationship between coach and player, providing a top-notch basketball experience, guides everything we do. Athletes seeking a superlative, structured gameplan for next-level training and preparation will not be disappointed. Our commitment to our athletes will compel you to not just play hard, but to compete hard. Every single game.

EXPOSURE
Our organization/coaches are well-respected by a large number of college coaches. Likewise, our credibility among college recruiters and event organizers is undisputed. Just like any team, we can sign up and attend exposure tournaments; but building relationships, and the longevity associated with them, takes people of honesty and integrity, committed to their players and families. The opportunity to “get seen”, through this context, is a very important component in our philosophy.

COACHING
BBC Select coaches are experienced, knowledgeable professionals who have proven ability in the various facets of working with young people. Throughout the season, each member will be challenged, encouraged, valued and respected. Their welfare and success will always be a primary concern. Our coaches strive to improve every area of each player’s game, and then to put each player in a position where they can be successful.

TRAINING
This is the new frontier. This is the area that helps separate one advanced athlete from the hundreds of others also vying to play collegiately. It’s the approach a professional would take (amateurs hope good things happen, professionals make good things happen.) The training we’re talking about takes place at the practices we hold to perfect our team game: film breakdown of the group and players; and specific technical and tactical sessions to address player needs in agility, strength movements, and of course, next-level skills. This is the area we find is most neglected in player’s career. You can go anywhere to play a lot of games, but how you perform in those games, is a direct result of how you’ve trained and prepared for them.
