    Manager's Notes — 2nd Off-Season Edition
High school baseball season is upon us. Right now, our local high schools are having their open gyms and the coaches are getting an early first-hand look at the talent available. The Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association’s annual yearbook thinks highly of the talent in Kenosha, picking Tremper and Bradford #1 and #2 respectively in the Southeast Conference. Tremper is the defending SEC champion while Bradford is the reigning WIAA Division I state champion. The WBCA yearbook also thinks highly of the prospects for both Shoreland Lutheran and St. Joseph, picking Shoreland to win the Midwest Classic Conference’s South Division and St. Joseph to finish third. Christian Life is picked to finish sixth in the MCC North.

Right now, we are just preparing for the upcoming season as well. We ran an indoor wiffle ball tournament at Carthage College in February which made $1,460 for our baseball team. Carthage baseball received an equal share. The event was successful enough that we are looking at putting another one on during the Christmas break as well as a third event in January at Tremper. We also had our first Baseball Bingo Event at the American Legion, which also was a success.

Good luck to all our local high school teams and we’ll see you at the ballpark.

    Manager's Notes — 1st Off-Season Edition
September 8, 2008  --   Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth ... well, not that long ago, but back when I started in American Legion baseball, it was at most a six-month a year thing. We'd collect the uniforms at the end of the season and not do anything until after the holidays.

Now, it's a year-round operation. We're doing a fall program for the Merchants and the state is having its fall managers' meeting already this month.

In addition, the Merchants are having the orientation program for 2009 already as well this month. We're inviting up to 24 players from the 2008 Merchants and other teams in the Legion program to explain the 2009 Merchants season.

Gotta have something to keep us busy.
