Marlins take on Allen Park at Airport Carleton Tournament
October 7, 2008 --
Last Sunday, the JV Mercy team competed in the Airport Carleton Tournament. The tournament started late, allowing the team to catch some extra zzz...s! Rested and ready to go they played their first game around eleven o'clock. The Marlins started off strong and won both games against Riverview. The next match against Bedford proved to be more demanding with the Marlins loosing the match. The playoffs followed. The Marlins played well against Allen Park and won the match the score being 25-23 and 26-24. The Marlins then went on to again challenge Bedford in the semi finals. In the first game of the match the Marlins came out strong and won. Bedford came back to win the second. Bedford ended up winning a close fought tie breaker 15-13. This week the JV team has an away game against Regina (tonight), a home game against Marian on Thursday and plays in the Walled Lake Central Tournament this Saturday...Go Marlins!

Junior Varsity 2008 - Marian Game - away game
September 28, 2008 --
Marlins vs Marian away game
This week, the Mercy Marlins traveled to Marian to take on their number one rival, the Mustangs. In the first game, the Marlins started strong, fighting hard for every point. The serving and hitting was strong throughout the first game, keeping it neck and neck until the end when Marian won 25 to 19. The Marlins had a slow start in the second game. However, their defense and teamwork picked up, helping them fight until the end. Unfortunately, this was not enough to win the game, with a score of 25 to 13. With room for improvement, the JV Mercy team plans to practice hard to come home with a victory the next time when Marian meets us on our home court.

Junior Varsity Team – Off and Running! September 9,2008
After a hot and humid tournament at Ann Arbor Pioneer two weeks prior,
the Mercy Marlins JV team traveled to Mt. Morris and much more pleasant
conditions inside the gym for their second tournament of the year. The Marlins defeated Bad Axe in the
opening pool play match by the scores of 21-16 and 21-12. Next up was their nemesis from the
Pioneer tournament, the Bedford Mules.
Game 1 went to the Marlins by a score of 21-17 as the Marlins rattled
off the last 8 points of the match to take the victory. Strong defensive play by Bedford in
game 2 resulted in a 21-16 defeat for the Marlins and a split of one game each
in the match. The Marlins then
overpowered Bentley by scores of 21-14 and 21-4 and then dispatched a
scrappy Flint Powers squad by scores of 21-15 and 21-15. As a result of a lost tiebreaker with
Bedford, the girls finished second in their pool and advanced to the gold
semifinals versus the Marian Mustangs.
Game 1 was a back and forth affair of great volleyball ending in a 21-18
victory for the Marlins. Game 2
saw the Mustangs jump out to a huge lead but the Marlins would not die easily;
they held off 9 straight match points and got as close as 20-19 before the
Mustangs took the next point and game 21-19. The Marlins had a similar start in game 3 and dug themselves
a hole of 7-0 that they could not recover from, losing the final game
11-4. Up this week is a
league match against Divine Child and then off to Grand Blanc for another
Saturday filled with volleyball.
Go Marlins!!
