Monroe Lacrosse's Inaugural Season Underway
Cranbury Press & The Sentinel
The fastest growing sport in America has reached Monroe. The Monroe Junior Falcons lacrosse team continues to attract boys and girls to its first-year program. The Junior Falcons are treating this as an instructional season learning fundamental skills such as passing, catching and shooting as well as positional play. "We are not concerned about winning or losing but that the kids have fun while learning the game that combines elements of soccer, basketball and hockey", says Joe Garavente, head coach and founder of Monroe Junior Falcons lacrosse.
Players get to play every position in scrimmages and games which they enjoy and it accelerates the learning process. "This is the third lacrosse program I have started and these Monroe kids have really impressed me with their enthusiasm and hustle", said Garavente.
Monroe has now played East Brunswick and Old Bridge with upcoming games with Freehold and North Brunswick. The plan is to continue with clinics in the Fall and to keep spreading the word that Monroe lacrosse is here to stay. When Spring rolls around again Monroe will play a full schedule with two teams. The Junior Falcons are already the envy of local lacrosse teams with their artificial field surface at Monroe High School. "There are a lot of college programs that do not have as nice a field as Monroe's. We are grateful to the township for allowing us to hold our practices and games here. It's not too late to sign up. We want even more kids. We have a 'Bring a Friend' campaign. The kids are the game's greatest ambassadors. They love it and want to share it with their friends", says Garavente.
Boys and girls ages 8-13 are encouraged to come to the Monroe High
School field any Tuesday and Thursday from 6-7:30 to watch or even
participate in a practice or scrimmage and ask questions of the coaches.
Garavente said, "We tell the kids the number one rule in lacrosse is
have fun". That's a rule the Monroe Junior Falcons have been
following very well.
SPORTS SHORTS
The Monroe Junior Faclcons show improvement every game during their
first season. Recently, Monroe held tough in losses to East Brunswick
and Old Bridge. Michael Valiant scored Monroe's first ever goal on a
full field clear against East Brunswick. Notable performances were also
turned in by Stephen Karoly, Harrison Utter and Nicole LaMacchia.
Against Old Bridge, Skyler Izzo provided a sneak peak of things to come to finish a picture perfect four pass exchange with a goal. Ryan Warren also scored on an end-to-end run. Defensively, Michael Blizniak, Connor Parke, Ava Prohaska and Mike Mischler provided gritty defense.
