Notre Dame Grammar School Basketball League Code of Conduct

    Statement of purpose

The primary function of any youth basketball program is to teach young men and women the fundamentals of basketball, including good sportsmanship, healthy competition and cooperative team play. In light of the importance of these aspects in the development of the youth of our schools, the following rules of conduct have been established to help maintain order, reinforce good Christian values and help to promote and teach good sportsmanship to all participants. It is also hoped these rules will help create an atmosphere which will provide the best possible experience for all participants and spectators.

Participation in the Notre Dame Grammar School Basketball League as a team, player, coach, assistant, scorer, cheerleader or spectator indicates a willingness to accept and comply with all the policies and rules set forth by the league. It is further understood by all that the league retains the right to take any disciplinary action it deems necessary against anyone:

    1. Whose conduct and/or actions cause disruption of the league.
    2. Whose actions and/or words causes a threat to the safety of others involved in the league.
    3. Whose conduct and/or actions are deemed to be unsportsmanlike or obnoxious, or hinders or is detrimental to the safe operation of the league.
    4. Who engages in any type of activity that the league deems unacceptable.

Disciplinary action may include probation, suspension and/or expulsion. Any disciplinary action is at the sole discretion of the league.

The following are types of conduct and activities that would be considered unacceptable, disruptive or detrimental. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive:
•Inappropriate, obscene, profane or vulgar language or gestures.
    •Verbal abuse
    •Taunting
    •Threats of violence
    •Fighting
    •Vandalism / destruction of property
•Failure to comply with a reasonable request from the league staff
•Trespassing into closed areas of the school
•Refusing to abide by the game officials decisions
•Heaping personal abuse upon any game official for any real or imaginary wrong decision or judgment
•Objectionable demonstrations by throwing equipment or other objects
•Laying hands upon, pushing, shoving, striking or threatening a game official
•Unsportsmanlike conduct during a game by any participant or spectator
•Failure to supervise younger children during a game

    Definition of unsportsmanlike conduct

Unsportsmanlike conduct is any antagonistic actions including vociferous and/or persistent complaints directed toward a game official, another coach, opposing player or spectator. This may include any type of verbal or physical abuse, the use of profane, obscene or vulgar language in any manner or at any time, or the threat of physical harm.

Any spectator cited for violation of the code of conduct will be warned of their actions, and they may be asked to leave the gymnasium. They may not be allowed to return for the remainder of the season.

Any adult coach or spectator may be cited for unsportsmanlike conduct by a game official or the league director. At the time of the incident, the game official or the league director may eject the offending individual(s) from the gymnasium or the building. The ejected individual(s) must leave the gymnasium or the building immediately and may not return. If the ejected individual(s) fails to or refuses to leave, the game will be forfeited in favor of the team not involved in the incident. (Note: The gymnasium shall be defined as any location in sight and sound of the game.)

Any player cited for unsportsmanlike conduct by a game official or the league director, ejected from a game for initiating a fight or retaliating in a fight, will be suspended indefinitely from league play. The League Director will review the incident and may reinstate the offending party or suspend them for the remainder of the season.
If any team member violates the code of conduct, their team will be placed on league probation for the remainder of the season and may be subject to further disciplinary action. Any further incidents while on probation may result in additional disciplinary action, including expulsion from the league.

All coaches are responsible for the conduct of their team members and should encourage the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship among all team members. Coaches are further reminded that under rules of basketball they are also responsible for the conduct and control of the spectators.

ALL DECISIONS MADE BY THE LEAGUE ARE FINAL.

Guidelines and Code of Conduct for Parents

As a parent, you play a special role in contributing to the needs and development of your children. Through your encouragement and good example, you can help assure that all the children learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline. In basketball, young people learn to work together, to sacrifice for the good of the team, to enjoy winning and deal appropriately with defeat, all while becoming physically fit and healthy. Best of all, they have fun!

    Support Your Child
Support your child by giving encouragement and showing interest in their team is very important. Help your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. Teach your child that hard work and an honest effort are often more important than victory - that way your child will always be a winner despite the outcome of the game!

    Always Be Positive
Parents serve as role models for their children. Become aware of this and work to be a positive role model. Applaud good plays by your child's team as well as good plays by the opposing team. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sports activities.

Remember That Your Child Wants to Have Fun
Remember that your child is the basketball player, not you. It's very important to let children establish their own goals - to play the game for themselves. Take care not to impose your own standards and goals on them. Don't put too heavy a burden on your child to win games.

    Reinforce Positive Behavior
Positive reinforcement is the best way to help your child achieve his/her goals and his/her natural fear of failure. Nobody likes to make mistakes. If your child does make one, remember it's all part of learning, so encourage your child's efforts and point out the good things that your child has accomplished.

Don't Be a Sideline Coach or Ref
Your coaching may be counterproductive to the coach's methodology. That means refraining from coaching or refereeing from the sidelines. Yelling at referees and players only creates problems for the players on the court and the organization as a whole. There will be no tolerance for yelling at players, officials, or coaches.
