Tenaris/Sling Choker (Sault) Midget Wildcats played the U19 Minnesota Crunch at the Rhodes Arena Wednesday Night. The Crunch won a close 3-2 game. Scoring for the Wildcats were Karly Meincke and Jasmine Roy. Assists went to Jayce Chiblow, Roy and Meincke. The Crunch are traveling to Stoney Creek to play in the U19 Showcase tournament. Last week the wildcats played in the same U17  tournament.

In their opening game, the Wildcats earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the North Bay Ice Boltz. Mackenzie Nadeau led the way with 1 goal and 1 assist. Jana Headrick also added a goal, while Megan Turcotte chipped in with an assist. Jennifer King earned the victory in net.

In their second game, the Wildcats once again skated to a 2-1 win, this time against the Oakville Hornets. Megan Girardi and Danielle Watling scored the Wildcat goals, and Kara Neveau added the lone assist. Nicole Naccarato picked up the win in goal for the Cats.

In their third round robin game, the Wildcats completed their impressive sweep of the opposition, as they downed the Ancaster Avalanche by a score of 3-0. Cassidy VandenDeipstraten led the way for the Wildcats with a pair of goals while Megan Turcotte scored once. Mackenzie Nadeau added a pair of assists, and little sister Taylor Nadeau added one assist. Jennifer King earned the shut-out in net for the girls, who earned a birth in the Championship game with their 3-0 round robin performance.

In the Championship game, the Wildcats faced a rematch against the North Bay Ice Boltz. Megan Turcotte scored for the Wildcats with the assists going to Autumn McLean and Mackenzie Nadeau, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie after regulation. The Wildcats were forced to kill off a penalty in overtime, but managed to hold off the Ice Boltz as the teams headed to a shoot-out to decide the game. Megan Girardi proved to be the hero as the 6th shooter for the Wildcats, and Nicole Naccarato stopped North Bay's 6th shooter giving the Wildcats the gold medal!

Upon their return to the practice ice on Monday night at the John Rhodes arena, head coach Dave Mason proved to be a man of his words, and allowed the girls to shave his head, which they did while adding a red mohawk. This is a great way for the Atom Wildcats to start their season. Congratulations girls.........Great job!!!!!!

The Sault’s Dunrite Peewee ‘BB’ Girls Wildcats reached the championship final but had to settle for a silver medal this past weekend at the 11^th Annual Peewee Silver Stick Tournament held this past weekend in Sarnia. The determined Sault squad gave up a pair of third period goals to fall to the Whitby Wolves 2-0.

The Wildcats became the first ever Sault Female Hockey Association team to advance to the finals of the Silver Stick Tournament by defeating St Clair Shores of Michigan by a 3-1 margin in the semi-finals. Meghan Boissoneau, Lydia Murray, and Karissa Zack each fired second period goals to erase an early one-goal deficit.

The Wildcats opened tournament action on Friday afternoon with a hard fought 4-3 loss to the same Whitby Wolves. Taylor Hayes, Darcee McCaig, and Boissoneau scored the goals for the Wildcats. The Sault team rebounded in the evening with a closely contested 4-3 victory over the Mount Clemens Wolves. Brooke Smith led the Wildcats with a pair of goals while Jamie-Lynn Anich and Lauren Rimmer each had single markers. Murray chipped in with a pair of assists.

Saturday’s final round robin action saw the Peewees tally two first period markers and hang on for a narrow 2-1 victory over St Clair Shores. Hayes and Boissoneau supplied the offense for the Wildcats.

The Sault’s Dunrite Peewee ‘BB’ Girls Wildcats won three games and lost one but failed to advance to the championship final at the Northern Ontario Challenge Tournament held this past weekend in Sudbury. The Wildcats finished in a three-way tie for first but were eliminated due to a goal differential tiebreaker.

The Sault opened tournament action on Friday with a 4-1 victory over the Orillia Hawks. Lydia Murray fired the hat trick to lead the victors while Meghan Boissoneau added the single marker. Lauren Rimmer and Brooke Smith each had a pair of assists in the victory. In their second game of the day, the Sault Reps gave up three unanswered first period markers and suffered a 5-2 setback to the North Bay Ice Boltz. Jamie Lynn Anich and Rimmer handled the Sault scoring in the defeat.

Saturday’s action saw the Peewees hang on for a thrilling 1-0 victory over the host Sudbury Lady Wolves. Murray’s first period marker was all the offense the Sault would need while Taylor Smith provided solid shutout goaltending. The Sault rounded out the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 7-0 victory over the Clearview Ice Cats. Taylor Hayes, Smith and Murray each supplied a pair of goals with Chelsea Gaudette adding a single marker. Rimmer chipped in with three assists while Murray also added two helpers. Taylor Smith once again provided the shutout netminding.

Next tournament action for the Peewees will be the Provincial Championships to be held in Brampton the weekend of April 17^th to the 19^th.

In the finals the girls would face a strong North Halton club who had an undefeated record throughout the tournament. A slow start cost the wildcats as they were down 2-0 late in the 2^nd period, but the cats roared back to take the lead 3-2 in the late stages of the game, but with less then a minute remaining the girls recorded a penalty. North Halton pulled their goalie to give them a 6-4 advantage and with only 1 second left they jammed home a rebound to tie the game. After 5 minutes of exciting 4 on 4 overtime nothing was settled so they headed to the dreaded shoot-out. With 3 shooters aside the girls were ready for the most exciting event of the season, the Wildcats first shooter made no mistake as she put the girls ahead with a beautiful goal, and that’s all their goalie needed as she made 3 straight saves to capture the Tournament Title 2-1. Good Job Girls…….

PEE WEE WILDCATS BATTLE KITCHENER TO A TIE

MAITLAND FORD PEEWEE WILDCATS WIN TO CONTINUE THEIR GOAL

Game 3 - The Maitland Ford Peewee Wildcats won a close contest with the Cornwall Typhones to continue their advancement in the Ontario Provincial Championships, but had to score in overtime to win. With less the two minutes left in the first overtime, Jana Longo fed a pass through the neutral zone to Taylor Cleminson who would fire a shot as she crossed the oppositions blue line that would hand cuff Cornwall’s goalie. It would be the only goal in the game that saw both teams with numerous chances through out the four periods. Alesha Labbe would record the shut out. The Wildcats next game is at 12:30 against Woodstock

Game 4 - MAITLAND FORD PEEWEE WILDCATS ADVANCE TO QUARTERS.

The Maitland Ford Peewee Wildcats continued their advance with a 2 – 1 win over the Woodstock Wildcats. Maitland Ford would score first in the middle of the second period, when Jessica Orazetti would receive a pass from Reanne Zack and with a break away would beat the Woodstock goalie with a backhand to open the scoring. But Woodstock would come back 2 minutes later with on of their own to tie it. Then at the drop of the puck at centre ice in the third, Maitland Ford would create a strong rush into Woodstock’s end and Taylor Cleminson would score the game winner with the assist going to Orazetti. The Wildcats next game is at 7:15 against Ancaster Avalanche.

PEE WEE WILDCATS GET OFF TO A FAST START IN BRAMPTON

The Eazy Cab Atom Wildcats competed in the Soo Pee Wee Extravaganza Tournament last weekend in Sault Ste. Marie, and were successful in capturing the Silver Medal. Way to go girls on a tremendous weekend.

Game 1: Wildcats 4   Highland Ford 2

In the opening game of the tournament the Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two periods as Lydia Murray led the way with a pair of goals. Jamie-Lynn Anich and Caitlyn Baker also scored for the Wildcats. Lauren Rimmer and Allie Marshall along with Anich and Murray added assists. Highland Ford put on some late pressure as they scored twice in the third period to cut the lead in half, but Jennifer King held on in net to preserve the Wildcats 4-2 victory.

Game 2: Wildcats 1   Huckson Brothers 0

In game two, the Wildcats got an early goal from Lydia Murray on a great pass from Lauren Rimmer to take a 1-0 lead. That would be all the scoring they would need, as Taylor Smith shut-out Huckson Bros. the rest of the way, giving the Wildcats the one goal victory.

Game 3: Wildcats 3    Mrs. B's 1

In their third game of the round-robin, the Wildcats scored twice in the second period to break open a tie game as they defeated Mrs. B's by a 3-1 final. Lydia Murray and Lauren Rimmer led the way as they each picked up a goal and two assists. Hali Studens completed the scoring for the Wildcats while Jana Headrick added an assist. Jennifer King earned her second win of the tournament in net. With the victory, the Wildcats assured themselves of a place in the semi-finals.

Semi-Final: Wildcats 3   Aurora's 2  (5 OT)

In what was probably the most exciting game the girls have played all year, Lydia Murray completed her hat-trick in the fifth overtime period, as the Wildcats defeated Aurora's by a final score of 3-2. Lauren Rimmer earned two assists, while Meghan Hayes and Jana Headrick had one assist each. Taylor Smith picked up her second victory of the tournament in goal for the Wildcats, as they earned a spot in the championship game.

Championship Game: Blind River 2    Wildcats 0

In the championship game, the Wildcats gave everything they had, but came up just a little bit short as they fell to the Blind River Warriors by a 2-0 final. It was a fairly evenly matched game, with the Warriors holding a 17 - 7 advantage in shots. Congratulations to the girls for earning their second consecutive silver medal, after losing in the finals in Sudbury the week before.

The Maitland Ford Peewee Wildcats didn’t open the tournament with their usual strong play in the 27^th Annual Walter Gretzky Tournament. The game saw them only deliver 5 shots on the Walkerton goaltender, who easily stopped all of them. Walkerton would score at the 7:54 mark of the second period from a scramble in front of goaltender Aleisha Labbe  and it would be all they would need to  come out on top.

Game 2 – Peewee Wildcats Bounce Back In Style

National Supply Wildcats were off to a slow start against the Clarington Flames in game 1 of the round robin. The Wildcats would open up the scoring on a goal from Olivia Pavoni at the 6:18 mark of the 1st period with assists going to Brittany Syms and Jamie Sacco. Strong goaltending by Amanda Alexander kept the Sault squad in the game for most of the game but the Clarington team pressed  hard  for  a goal in the 3rd period and at the 4:09 mark they managed two goals :42 seconds apart.  This game would end in a 2 – 1 score for Clarington. The Sault team had to kill off 6 penalties to Clarington’s 3 .

Game#2 – National Supply/Main Street Pharmacy 5 – Bluewater 0

The National Supply Wildcats would focus this game and be ready to take on the Bluewater team from Sarnia. Sault Ste. Marie would open the scoring at the 3:07 mark of the 1st period on an unassisted goal from Renae Van BusKirk on a hard drive to the net. The second goal would come at the 6:20 mark of the second period when Brittany Syms would find the net with the assist going to Olivia Pavoni. Renae VanBuskirk would get her second of the game at the 10:45 mark of the 3rd period with the assist going to Kelsey Burton. Cierra Luxton would get the puck hard to the net at the 3:05 mark beating the Bluewater netminder with the assist going to Mariah Krancevich. The Sault squad  would finish with a 5th goal 1 minute later and Brittany Syms would get her second goal of the game with Olivia Pavoni  picking up her Second helper along with Jamie Sacco.  Emma Running would earn the Shut out closing the door from start to finish.The Sault team would have to kill 4 penalties to Bluewater’s 3 penalties.

Game #3 - National Supply/Main Street Pharmacy 3 – London 0

The 3rd game of the round robin would decide if the Sault team would play in the Semi’s or go home early. The girls would once again arrive at the Western Fair Arena with their game faces on. The two teams would play scoreless until the 8:51 mark of the 2nd period when the Sault team would get their first of three second period goals. Renae VanBuskirk would find the back of the cage with the assist going to Cierra Luxton. The second goal would come less than a minute later on an unassisted goal by Mackenzie Gibson. Brittany Syms would close the deal for the Wildcats scoring the 3rd goal with the assist going to Olivia Pavoni. Amanda Alexander would close the door on the home town London  team  earning the teams second shutout of the round robin. Penalties were 4 to 3 in favour of the Sault once again.

Semi Finals - National Supply/Main Street Pharmacy 0 – Mississauga – 1

The Wildcats would finish a + 7 to earn 1st place in the 4 team pool and face off against the 2nd place team from pool B. This game would provide a lot of great excitement for the fans with the back and forth action provided by both teams.The Sault team would be denied their first goal in 2nd period when a goal would be called back by the London Official. The Sault team would still pressure the Mississauga goalie but were denied when a solid shot rang off the crossbar. Later in the 3rd period with Sault squad down 2 players the Sault would have  their second goal of the game called back by the other London official. It seemed like just a matter of time as to when the Wildcats would score a goal that could not be questioned but nothing could be solved in regulation time. The 2 teams would square off 4 on 4 which would be the 1st of 2,three minute overtime periods. The play was going back and forth until the 2:26 mark of the second overtime while playing 3 on 3 when the London Official called a very questionable slashing penalty when such a high intensity back and forth game had been played to this point. With the Sault player due to be out of the box at the :26 second mark and the face off in the Sault territory, the Mississauga girls would get the puck hard to the net off the draw at the :41 second mark of the overtime ending the opportunity for the National Supply/Main Street Pharmacy Bantam Wildcats to win their 3rd consecutive London Devilettes Tournament.

Sault Ste. Marie can be proud of this team which represents Sault Female Hockey in the Bantam Rep division. All of the players on this team deserve recognition whether their name is on the score sheet or not. Thank you to all the girls for the hard work and dedication this past weekend.

The Eazy Cab Atom Wildcats returned home from the Silver Stick girls hockey tournament in Belleville with an undefeated record…and nothing to show for it.

In their first game, the Wildcats defeated the Waterloo Ravens by a score of 5-2 with five different players scoring. Lydia Murray, Caitlin Baker, Lauren Rimmer and Hali Studens led the way with a goal and an assist each, while Jamie-Lynn Anich completed the scoring. Allie Marshall and Megan Hayes each added an assist for the Wildcats, while Taylor Smith earned the victory in net.

In their second game, the Wildcats battled the Clarington Flames to a 4-4 tie in what was by far their toughest game of the tournament. Lydia Murray paced the Wildcats with a pair of goals, while Danielle Watling and Mackenzie Nadeau scored once each. Also finding the score sheet were Lauren Rimmer, Hali Studens, Caitlin Baker and Jana Headrick who each added one assist. Jennifer King held on for the tie in net for the Wildcats, who were out-shot in the game 21-16.

In their third and final game of the round-robin, the Wildcats showed their teeth as they dominated the Barrie Sharks in a 5-0 win. Lydia Murray once again led her team with two goals and an assist, with single goals going to Allie Marshall, Megan Turcotte and Hali Studens. Lauren Rimmer and Caitlin Baker each contributed 2 assists, while single assists were earned by Kaysie Bordin, Jana Headrick, Mackenzie Nadeau and Erin Gillespie. Taylor Smith stopped all 12 shots she faced in earning the shut-out.

Although the girls finished the round-robin portion of the tournament with an undefeated record in the six team event, they did not qualify for the semi-finals based on a poorly designed playoff system. The Wildcats were in a three team division where the other two teams finished with perfect 3-0-0 records, leaving the Wildcats in third place with a 2-0-1 record, thereby missing the playoffs. The other division meanwhile, saw the top two teams advance to semi-final action with records of 0-2-1 and 0-3-0 respectively. The girls were of course a little disappointed, but quickly decided to use their strong play as a motivator as they prepare for their next tournament in Sudbury on February 22^nd.

Game #1 - 

Sault National Supply/Main Street Pharmacy Wildcats 1 - Scarborough Sharks  - 0

Goaltender Amanda Alexander had to stop a penalty shot and managed to hold on for a shutout in game 1 of the tournament. Olivia Pavoni would find the back of the net with the only goal of the game receiving a nice feed from Brittany Syms and Jamie Orlando at the 5:54 mark of the 3^rd period. A solid team effort  was  given by all 17 players.

Game #2 – National Supply/ Main Street Pharmacy Wildcats - 3  VS  King City Calvary – 1

In game 2 of the tournament Wildcats forward Mackenzie Gibson awarded a penalty shot at the 7:56 mark of the first period after being hooked on a breakaway. She would open up the scoring on a nice deek on the King City net minder. At the 4:43 mark of the same period a speedy Brittany Syms would find the back of the net and put the Sault up 2- 0 . King City would find the back of the net on a scramble play at the 4:48 mark of the 3^rd period to make a close 2-1 game. At the 2:40 mark of the 3^rd period Olivia Pavoni  would  make a pass out of the defensive  zone to a breaking Jessica Grisdale and she would power a shot past the  King Calvary goalie to make the score 3-1. Strong defensive hockey and solid goaltending by Emma Running would allow the Sault team to have a 2 and 0 record going into game 3 of the round robin play.

Game#3

Sault National Supply/Main Street Pharmacy Wildcats – 1 vs  Belmont Blazers - 0

Game 3 would have the Sault team  facing a strong Belmont  club. After the 2 clubs battled back and forth for nearly 2 periods but at the 8:26 mark of the 2^nd period, Jamie Orlando would take the puck into the Belmont zone wide and she would feed the puck to Olivia Pavoni in the slot with a onetime shot beating the Belmont goalie on the stick side. Amanda Alexander would pick up her second shutout of the tournament with solid defensive efforts and good back checking by the Sault club. The National Supply/MainStreet Pharmacy Wildcats earned themselves a spot in the  semi finals against the home town Markham-Stoufville team.

Semi Final

Sault National Supply/Main Street Pharmacy Wildcats – 1 Markham-Stoufville – 0

It seemed like not a player would be able to solve either goalie in this nail biter of a game which would play out to a 0-0 tie in regulation time. Markham had many scoring chances but with the absence of Jayce Chiblow the defensive core of Arla Biron, Kelsey Burton, Michelle Fabbro, Melody Paradis and Jaimie Sacco would not allow the Markham team to get second shots on goalie Emma Running earning her 1^st shutout of the tournament. The forward line of Jessica Grisdale, Cierra Luxton and Haley MacLeod  provided   solid back checking  against the strong Markham forwards. A five min 3 on 3 sudden death overtime would begin but it would end at the 3:51 mark after Renae VanBuskirk would find Mariah Krancevich and she would blow one past the Markham net minder and send the Sault team to the finals against the round robin rivals Belmont Blazers.

Game#6

 Sault National Supply/Main street Pharmacy Wildcats – 2  vs  Belmont Blazers – 3

Sault Ste. Marie would open the scoring at the 4:29 mark of the first period when Olivia Pavoni would make a nice pass to Brittany Syms at the back door and she would beat the Belmont goalie to put the Sault up 1 – 0. After a penalty filled 1^st and 2^nd period the Sault squad would net one more goal at the 2:48 mark of the second period when Brittany Syms would get her second goal of the game with assists going to Olivia Pavoni and Jaime Sacco. Belmont not to be out done would get their chance when the Sault would get penalties back to back early in the 3^rd period allowing Belmont to tie the Sault  2-2 which would stand until the end of the game and sending this one into 5 minute 3 on 3 overtime for the second time in that day for the Sault club. Belmont would score at the 2:42 mark for the win.

The Bantam Wildcats would settle for Silver on a hard fought weekend by all  17 players.

Coaches Mark Pavoni, Tim Burton, Jeff Grisdale , trainer Loretta Alexander and Manager Cathy Burton were very proud of the team effort and exciting hockey that the girls provided all weekend. Next tournament action for the Wildcats will be in Monroe, Michigan in January.
