Past Players of the Year
August 29, 2007 -- For the first time in their history the Spartans earned league recognition courtesy of center fielder Byron Haynes. Haynes was awarded the league Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Haynes, a native of Dublin, GA and a member of the Georgia Southwestern State University's baseball team, lead the league in the following categories: At Bats (77), runs (25), hits (34), batting average (.442), total bases (51), walks (32), stolen bases (29), on base percentage (.629) and slugging percentage (.669). Haynes finished second in doubles(5), triples (3) and homeruns (2).
2007 Offensive Player of the Year: It was an obvious decision that Byron Haynes would take home this award as well. His totals include both CBL and non-league games. Haynes hit .398 (49-for-123) with 37 runs scored, 10 doubles, 5 triples, 2 homeruns and 16 RBI. He walked 40 times, got hit by 10 pitches, and stole 34 bases (while only being thrown out five times). His outlandish numbers don't stop there. He also had .595 on base percentage and a .610 slugging percentage. Haynes will be a sophomore at Georgia Southwestern this fall.
2007 Defensive Player of the Year: In a year where the Spartans had their difficulties in the field, catcher Dave Luczyski's efforts behind the plate stood out, especially during the stretch run of the season. Luczyski, of Woodridge and Orange CC, ended up carrying the load of the 46 game season after Marc Mortarello went down with an arm injury in early July. Luczyski will be a sophomore at Orange CC this fall.
2007 Pitcher of the Year: While the Spartans may have had their difficulties in the field and at times at the plate, the mound was the Spartans safety net. The one pitcher that carried the team from opening day to the the last playoff game was Mike Murtagh . Murtagh, despite a win-loss record of 1-3, was a horse for the Spartans. Murtagh, of Warwick and Orange CC, threw a team high 51 1/3 innings with an earned run average of 1.77 (second best on the team). Murtagh struck out 55 batters and allowed 48 hits on the season. Murtagh will be joining Luczyski this fall as a sophomore at Orange CC.
The 2006 Offensive, Defensive and Pitching MVPs have been determined. Congratulations to all.
Offensive MVP: #44 Steve Cabarcas/LF (Middletown, NY/Mount St. Mary)
*Steve hit a team high .342 (38-for-111), tied for the team high in runs scored with 18 and lead the team in stolen bases with 10. "Cabby" batted leadoff the entire year accumulating 11 walks and 12 RBI's. Cabarcas was also the 2005 Sullivan Spartan offensive MVP.
Defensive MVP:#26 Chris Armstrong/ RF (Monroe, NY/ Orange CC)
*Due to roster movements Chris was given a chance in right field and flourished. "Army" made only two errors this summer and lead the team in OF assists with four. Armstrong, who also pitched nine innings this year, hit .324 (23-for-71) as he earned the everyday RF postion.
Pitching MVP: #14 Travis Steffens/ LHP (Port Jervis/ SUNYIT)
*In his fourth and final season Travis pitched his best. He lead the team in victories (4), complete games (5), starting pitchers' ERA (1.25) and innings pitched (50 1/3). "Trav" allowed only 10 walks and nine earned runs the entire summer. A leader on the mound, Steffens finished the season 4-3.
September 9, 2005 - -- The 2005 Offensive, Defensive and Pitching MVPs have been determined. Congratulations to not only these players but the entire team for an enjoyable summer.
Offensive MVP: #44 Steve Cabarcas/LF (Middletown, NY/Mount St. Mary)
*Cabarcas hit .328 (39-for-119) with 9 doubles, 4 triples and 17 RBI's. "Cabby" lead the team in at-bats, total hits, slugging % (.471) and RBI's. He also stole 7 bases. Steve will be a Junior at Mount St. Mary in Newburgh, NY for the 2006 season.
Defensive MVP:#7 Derek Blume/RF (Liberty, NY/Orange CC)
*Blume played a stellar right field and an occasional centerfield this past summer. Derek had 45 total chances without committing an error, including four assists (lead all outfielders). With his speed and strong arm the Spartans look forward to having Derek for a few more summers. "Blumey" will be a Sophomore at Orange CC in Middletown, NY for the 2006 season.
Pitching MVP: #15 Jon Kitsos/ RHP (Westtown, NY/Orange CC)
*On a staff that was loaded with talent, Kitsos, whose win-loss record did not reflect his efforts has been named the 2005 pitching MVP. "JK" compiled 53 1/3 innings this summer allowing 16 earned runs (2.10 ERA), despite a 2-3 record (his two wins were complete games), Jon gave up more than three runs only once in his eight starts. Jon also threw two one-hitters this summer. Jon will be a Sophomore this upcoming season at Orange CC in Middletown, NY.
